Elon Musk brands Bono a 'liar' and an 'idiot' over USAID comments
Bono was on the Joe Rogan podcast on Friday (30 May) to talk about the release of his documentary Bono: Stories Of Surrender.
During the three-hour conversation, the U2 frontman took the opportunity to critise the Trump administration and singled out Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which oversaw the dismantling of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Bono, who has been a campaigner for humanitarian aid for decades, criticised the cuts to international aid and cited a Boston University study that estimated that the cuts will cause more than 300,000 deaths around the world.
'There's food rotting in boats, in warehouses – 50,000 tons of it,' Bono said. 'The people who knew the codes, who were responsible for distributing that aid, were fired. That's not America, is it?'
Unsurprisingly, considering Rogan voted for Trump, his audience were quick to react – and not in a happy way.
One wrote: 'That guy's about as evil as they come Joe', while others stated they would be skipping the episode altogether and that it would be 'the first time I look forward to commercials'.
Then came Elon Musk's reaction, who took to X to say brand the singer 'such a liar/idiot', before adding that 'zero people have died' as a result of the USAID cuts.
In a later exchange, he said: 'South Park lampooned Bono as the biggest shit in the world. They were right.'
Musk stepped down from his wildly unpopular role at DOGE last week after serving the maximum 130-day term as a special government employee without Senate confirmation.
During his time at DOGE, hundreds of thousands of people participated in the "Hands Off" protests across all 50 states of the US to express their opposition to the policies of the Trump administration and cuts made by Musk's DOGE.
"Hands Off" event organizers said: "They're taking everything they can get their hands on — our healthcare, our data, our jobs, our services — and daring the world to stop them. This is a crisis, and the time to act is now."
Check out some of the best signs seen during these nation-wide protests.
Bono: Stories Of Surrender is a hybrid of concert movie and visual memoir, featuring spoken word passages from the singer's 2022 autobiography, 'Surrender.' It is streaming on Apple TV+ now.

Musk's X says French probe into algorithm is ‘politically motivated'
Elon Musk's social media platform X denied allegations by French authorities that it was part of a criminal investigation into alleged data tampering. The company also said on Monday that the French investigation is 'politically-motivated' and designed to 'restrict free speech' and denied the allegations. 'French authorities have launched a politically-motivated criminal investigation into X over the alleged manipulation of its algorithm and alleged 'fraudulent data extraction,'' the company wrote on X. In January, French prosecutors launched an investigation following allegations that X's algorithm was being used for the purposes of foreign interference. The first complaint was filed by a centrist member of parliament, Eric Bothorel, a member of President Emmanuel Macron's party. Bothorel warned against "recent changes to the X algorithm, as well as apparent interference in its management" since Elon Musk acquired the company in 2022. "Concerns about the impartiality' He said there has been in "reduction in the diversity of voices and options" that go against a secure and respectful environment on the social media platform. He blamed this on "a lack of clarity in criteria that led to algorithm changes and moderation decisions", and to "personal interventions from Elon Musk in the management of his platform". In February, the French investigative media Le Canard Enchaine reported that the second complaint came from a cybersecurity director in the public administration. The individual had reported a "major modification in the algorithm used by the X platform,' which had resulted in a huge amount of political content that is 'hateful, racist, anti-LGBTQ (or) homophobic, and aims to skew democratic debate in France". X said that it remained in the dark about what the allegations were but that 'based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech'. It said that for these reasons, X would not hand over data, despite the prosecutor's demand. X has also said that the experts who will review X's algorithm are biased. The two experts are David Chavalarias, director of the Paris Complex Systems Institute (ISC-PIF) and Maziyar Panahi, an AI platform leader at ISC-PIF. X said that Chavalarias runs a campaign called 'Escape X,' which encourages users to leave the social media platform and that Panahi had in the past participated in research projects with Chavalarias that demonstrate open hostility towards X'. 'The involvement of these individuals raises serious concerns about the impartiality, fairness, and political motivations of the investigation, to put it charitably. A predetermined outcome is not a fair one,' X said. Euronews Next has reached out to the prosecutors' office and X but did not receive a reply at the time of publication. X owner Elon Musk has previously caused outcry by European politicians for commenting about domestic politics and publicly supporting Germany's far-right AfD party.

Humanitarian sector in crisis as USAID cuts force NGOs to prioritise needs
Africa 06:02 From the show One of US President Donald Trump's first acts on his return to the White House was to suspend the activities of USAID, the United States Agency for International Development. In DR Congo and France, our reporters Elena Volochine and Aurélie Bazzara-Kibangula met those bearing the brunt of these decisions.

Musk's X denies French allegations of algorithm manipulation
Elon Musk's social media platform X said on Monday it denied all allegations made by French authorities over manipulation of its algorithm and "fraudulent data extraction", adding that it has not acceded to the demands made in a French criminal investigation. "French authorities have requested access to X's recommendation algorithm and real-time data about all user posts on the platform in order for several 'experts' to analyze the data and purportedly 'uncover the truth' about the operation of the X platform," X said, adding that they denied the demands since they "have a legal right to do." Earlier this year, the Paris public prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the X social media platform after receiving two complaints. The first was filed by centrist parliamentarian Eric Bothorel, a member of President Emmanuel Macron 's party, who has looked into cybersecurity. The second was from a "senior official of a French public institution", the prosecutor's office said in a statement. The investigation was handed over to the French police in early July on charges of "altering the functioning of an automated data processing system as part of an organised criminal enterprise" and "fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system as part of an organised criminal enterprise". The French authorities, according to X, requested access to its recommendation algorithm and real-time data on all posts by users of the platform as part of the investigation, which the group refused. In its statement posted on X, the social media firm accused the investigation of "distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech. Elon Musk The EU's former digital affairs commissioner, French politician Thierry Breton has described some of his pro-AfD comments as "foreign interference". The commission opened a probe against X in December 2023 and accused it in July 2024 of breaching its digital services regulations. The network risks being ordered to pay a fine of billions of euros.
