
Never-Smokers' Lung Cancer May Worsen in Areas With Air Pollution

Lung cancer appears to mutate more in patients living in areas with higher levels of fine-particulate air pollution, such as that released by vehicles and air pollution.
This is the conclusion of a study from the National Institutes of Health and the University of California, San Diego, which studied tumors in nearly 900 lung cancer patients who had never smoked.
Despite this, paper author and oncologist Maria Teresa Landi of the National Cancer Institute told Newsweek, those in areas of higher air pollution "had a pattern of mutations that is typical of tumors from subjects who have smoked tobacco."
Previous studies into the genomics of lung cancer have tended to focus exclusively on people who smoke tobacco, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of how the disease develops.
In contrast, the new work represents the largest-ever whole-genome study of lung cancer patients who have never smoked—who account for 25 percent of all lung cancer cases worldwide—and could help us identify new ways to protect against the condition.
The findings, the team writes, are "underscoring the importance of environmental mutagenic factors in shaping the lung cancer genomes of never smokers."

In their study, the researchers analyzed lung tumors found in 871 patients, none of whom had ever smoked, as part of the international Sherlock-Lung study.
The team then cross-referenced the geographic locations of each patient with measurements of PM 2.5 air pollution—particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, or about forty times thinner than the average human hair—sorting each subject into high and low levels of air pollution.
The researchers found associations between air pollution exposure and mutations in several genes that were previously linked with tobacco smoking. These included changes in the tumor-suppressing "TP53" gene.
Alongside this, the team noted a relationship between air pollution exposure and the premature shortening of "telomeres", sections of DNA found at the end of chromosomes that act like the protective aglets at the end of shoelaces.
Telomeres naturally shorten every time they are involved in cellular divisions and when they get too short, they become unable to replicate and die. Shorter telomeres are associated with genetic instability.
"Shorter telomeres are a sign of more rapid cell division, a hallmark of cancer," Landi said. She added: "This observation suggests that air pollution may be promoting the growth of lung cancer as well as causing changes that might initiate a cancer."
Unexpectedly, the analysis also revealed that although exposure to secondhand smoke was associated with a slight increase in mutation rates and shortened telomeres, it did not appear to lead to an increase in cancer-driving mutations.
This, the team said, suggests that secondhand smoke may present less of a risk of causing genetic mutations than air pollution.
This does not mean, however, that secondhand smoke is safe. As the researchers note: "Additional non-mutagenic carcinogenesis could be contributing to the observed rise in lung cancer in those exposed to secondhand smoke."

In 2012, research published by the Stanford University School of Medicine found that somewhere in the region of 8.4 million U.S. adults were prone to sleepwalking. The study also identified an association between sleepwalking and psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. "I find that I sleepwalk more if I have a lot of caffeine in the day or if I'm stressed," Knowles said. Recently, Knowles' sleepwalking has taken on a different form though. "Lately I've been Door Dashing random items," she said. "Just regular things, onion rings, just a single bottle of Coke although I don't drink Coke. I either see the email notification when I wake up or I go to leave for work and there's a bag of cold food at my door." That's what led to the recent incident. Knowles woke to find the usual email notification but no bag of cold food at her door. "I was so confused because I didn't see any bag in the picture so I ran down the stairs and was baffled to see the little sauce," she said. That was when she noticed the sachet of honey mustard. By reviewing footage from her Ring doorbell cam of the delivery being made and going through her DoorDash order history, Knowles was able to piece together what had happened. She had paid a man $8 to deliver a single sachet of sauce to her house. "I thought it was funny so I showed it to my husband and he wasn't surprised at yet another silly sleepwalking thing I did," Knowles said. "I do like A&W honey mustard but I'm not sure why I would order it alone!" Eager to share the amusing experience further, Knowles posted the doorbell camera footage of the delivery to her house on her TikTok onewithwater. It's been watched 4.5 million times already. Though it might seem like an extreme incident, Knowles doesn't think of it as her worst sleepwalking crime. "It's up there, but I've also emptied the entire fridge, I've had a bath, I've wandered outside in the middle of the night," she said. Though her family's reaction has always been a mix of amusement and concern, Knowles has "learned to live with it." "I try to keep my life stress free but that isn't possible for everyone," she said. "I was a registered nurse in emergency for the last two and a half years so I was always stressed. Recently I changed to another job and it's not as much stress, so less sleepwalking."

"We were watching our golden retriever, Frank, on Live View from the car when he suddenly realized we were talking to him through the Ring camera," Bryan's roommate Katherine told Ring. Frank's adorable reaction was captured on the Ring device with the footage subsequently shared with Newsweek. It was an adorable mix of joy at hearing Bryan's voice and assuming he was home, followed by confusion when he realized he and Katherine were nowhere to be found. "Frank, albeit being only 1-year-old, is usually a bit of a slow mover, but he immediately perked up and started searching for the voice—it was hilarious!" Katherine said. The pure blind confusion that plays across Frank's cuddly face had the canine's human companions in stitches. Katherine, meanwhile, thought it was worthy of a wider audience. "My roommate Bryan and I couldn't stop laughing," she said. "We use the camera to talk to all four of our pets, but this moment with Frank was just too funny not to share." After CT and MRI scans, medics believed it was a transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a "ministroke." It is different from major types of stroke. Blood flow to the brain is blocked for only a short time—usually no more than five minutes. But, a few weeks later in May, he was diagnosed with Bell's palsy. The American Brain Foundation says approximately 40,000 people in the United States are affected by Bell's palsy each year. The most commonly affected age group is 15 to 45 years old. Dr. Nicholas Dragolea, a London-based physician, told Newsweek: "There is no definite cause or triggers can be identified in the typical cases. There is a suggestion that previous infections with the herpes simplex or herpes zoster virus may be involved, but this has not been definitely proven." TikTok/@nfisher08 Dragolea, who works at My Longevity Centre in London, said: "Differentiating between a stroke and Bell's palsy can be tricky and should only be done in a clinical setting by a trained health-care professional, as misdiagnosing a stroke can be fatal. "The basic discriminator that we use in clinical practice is the forehead," said Dragolea. "If the muscle weakness doesn't affect the forehead and patients are still able to raise the eyebrow for example, then it is more likely to be a stroke or another cause of facial paralysis. A full neurological examination, as well as a thorough anamnesis [patient's account of their medical history], remain important for an accurate diagnosis." Fisher took seven weeks off work and attended physiotherapy for one week, followed by massaging his face at home. "I had one proper massage after the third week, which really helped, and that's when I started to see improvements," Fisher said. "I also concentrated on mirror feedback exercises and massages to release any tension. "I had to relearn how to use the muscles in my face once the nerve recovered," Fisher added. Alongside this, he took B12 supplements to encourage nerve recovery. But this dramatic change in his appearance took its toll on his mental health. "I felt insecure," Fisher said. "It affected me mentally as my favorite thing about myself is my smile and then it was gone! "Luckily, it was temporary, but it did affect me as I felt so awkward in social settings. "I couldn't eat or drink properly—I would dribble and struggle to get my mouth around a sandwich," he added. "My eye leaked, and I couldn't close it for two weeks, so sleeping was a struggle," Fisher said. "My face is now back working! I still have some slight weakness, but I am relearning how to use all the muscles in my face."
