Pirates hit 2 homers off Holmes and blank Mets 4-0 to prevent 3-game sweep
Five pitchers combined on a six-hitter as the last-place Pirates (15-29) won for the fourth time in 17 games to prevent a series sweep. They're 3-3 under Don Kelly, promoted from bench coach to manager when Derek Shelton was fired last week.
Rookie right-hander Chase Shugart (2-3) tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief of wild starter Bailey Falter for his second career win. It was the fourth shutout this year for Pittsburgh, which has gone a franchise-record 20 games in a row without scoring more than four runs.
With slugger Juan Soto getting his first night off this season, the NL East-leading Mets were blanked for the second time. Next stop, a weekend Subway Series against the crosstown-rival Yankees — with both New York teams in first place.
Facing his original major league club, Holmes (5-2) gave up homers to Gorski with rain falling in the second and then Triolo in the fifth. The converted reliever had won three straight starts and five consecutive decisions.
The first pitch was delayed 15 minutes because of wet weather.
Pittsburgh center fielder Oneil Cruz missed his fourth straight game with lower back tightness. He remains day-to-day but is getting a lot better, Kelly said.
Key moments
Falter walked four of his first 10 batters and five overall in 3 2/3 innings. But he left the bases loaded by striking out Luis Torrens in the first. Shugart replaced Falter with the bags full again in the fourth and retired José Azócar to end the inning.
Key stat
Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds, a two-time All-Star with a $106.75 million contract, is mired in an 0-for-21 slump. He has two hits in his last 45 at-bats, dropping his season average to .194.

Orioles eke out Game 2 win, sweep DH against Jays
(Photo credit: Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images) Adley Rutschman, in his second day back from the injury list, hit a run-scoring double to break an eighth-inning tie as the host Baltimore Orioles pulled off a doubleheader sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays, winning 3-2 in the nightcap on Tuesday. Ramon Laureano had two singles and a walk for Baltimore, which made good use of three extra-base hits. In the eighth, Gunnar Henderson hit a one-out double and scored on Rutschman's double. The last-place Orioles have won the first three games of the series, which ends Wednesday afternoon, and have captured five consecutive games overall. Baltimore notched a 16-4 victory in the doubleheader opener after prevailing 11-4 in the series opener on Monday. The American League East-leading Blue Jays took their third loss in a row. Between games of the doubleheader, the teams made a trade, with reliever Serathony Dominguez going to the Blue Jays from the Orioles, who are in a sell-off mode. Dominguez pitched a scoreless seventh inning against his now-former team. The Orioles called upon Corbin Martin, who was the winning pitcher in relief Monday night, to work the ninth for his first career save. He faced a threat, though. Martin hit the leadoff batter and issued a walk before Myles Straw's sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. Martin struck out Nathan Lukes looking, then fanned Bo Bichette swinging on a full-count pitch to end the game. Andrew Kittredge (2-2) was the winning pitcher after throwing one shutout inning. Orioles rookie starter Brandon Young, who is winless in five decisions, had a strong outing. He worked a career-high six innings and limited Toronto to two runs on six hits. Young issued two walks and struck out six. Eric Lauer gave the Blue Jays five innings in a starting role, permitting two runs while yielding five hits and one walk. He whiffed four. Jeff Hoffman (6-4) gave up one run in his lone inning. After the Orioles racked up five sacrifice flies in the first game, three of the first four runs scored between the two teams in the nightcap came on plays that didn't involve a hit. The lone run-producing hit across the game's first seven innings came from Ryan O'Hearn's fourth-inning triple. That was followed in the same frame by Ramon Urias' RBI groundout.

Coco Gauff earns double-fault-filled win in Montreal
(Photo credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images) Top-seeded Coco Gauff survived a stiff second-round test from Danielle Collins, prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2) in an all-U.S. matchup at the Omnium Banque Nationale on Tuesday in Montreal. Gauff, who won the French Open last month for her second Grand Slam title, overcame a whopping 23 double faults. She served only three aces, though one came on her match point in the third-set tiebreaker. Collins' success ratio in that category wasn't much better, as she had two aces and 13 double faults. Both players converted nine of their 16 break-point opportunities. Gauff advances to a third-round match against Russia's Veronika Kudermetova, who topped 29th-seeded Olga Danilovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-2. Earlier Tuesday, Aoi Ito of Japan completed a stunning comeback to eliminate Italian No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini, and hometown favorite Leylah Fernandez also experienced an early exit. Ito, ranked No. 110 in the world, was down a set and a break before charging back to upset Paolini 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5) in second-round action. Ito trailed 4-1 in the second set before coming back to tie the score; she saved one match point in the 10th game on her way to forcing the third set. Ito controlled most of the third set before Paolini forced the tiebreaker. The Italian held several one-point leads in the back-and-forth tiebreaker but Ito came back from down 5-4 to record the final three points of the match. Ito, 21, had not won a tour-level match all season until beating Katie Volynets in the first round Sunday. That made it even more shocking that she could oust Paolini, who already has two WTA 1000 titles under her belt this year in Qatar and Italy. Ito won despite committing 11 double faults. She converted 7 of 10 break points against Paolini while saving 11 of the 19 break points she faced. As for Fernandez, she never held a lead in a 6-4, 6-1 first-round defeat to Australian Maya Joint. Fernandez had beaten Joint in the first round of last week's WTA 500 event in Washington, D.C., where the Canadian went on to capture the biggest title of her career. It was not a banner day for the Canadian contingent. No. 8 seed Emma Navarro breezed past Canada's Rebecca Marino 6-1, 6-2 in 63 minutes. Bianca Andreescu, meanwhile, withdrew due to a foot injury, allowing a walkover for fourth seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia. The Ontario native was the 2019 Canadian Open and U.S. Open champion. In another first-round match, Caty McNally battled past fellow American Alycia Parks 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7). McNally fell behind 3-0 in the third-set tiebreaker and saved two match points before she pulled in front. Other Round of 64 winners included No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan; No. 15 Daria Kasatkina of Australia; No. 24 Marta Kostyuk and No. 30 Dayana Yastremska, both of Ukraine; Russia's Anna Kalinskaya; Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro; Romania's Jaqueline Cristian; the Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova; China's Lin Zhu; and the Netherlands' Suzan Lamens.

Machado's homer highlights Padres' 7-1 win over Mets, who lose Soto to bruised foot
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado hit a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning and the San Diego Padres won 7-1 on Tuesday night against the NL East-leading New York Mets, who watched slugger Juan Soto leave the game after fouling a ball off his left foot in the fourth. The Mets announced that Soto has a bruised foot. He was in considerable pain as he was checked by a trainer. He took a few swings and finished his at-bat, grounding out as second baseman Jake Cronenworth made a diving stop.
