Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford likely out for the season after off-field ‘accident'

New York Post25-06-2025
The depth of the Red Sox will continue to be tested.
Starting pitcher Kutter Crawford will have what is 'likely' season-ending wrist surgery after an off-field 'accident,' manager Alex Cora told reporters Wednesday.
Cora said the injury was not caused by doing anything 'irresponsible.'

'He's down. It's been a tough year for him,' Cora said before Boston took on the Angels in Anaheim. 'From spring training to getting ready to this, it happened and now surgery. It hasn't been a great year for him.'

Crawford was already on the 60-day injured list due to a right knee injury, which he played through during the entire 2024 season.

While Crawford expected he would be ready for this year, he suffered a setback in the winter. But now, it looks like his entire 2025 is in peril.
Last season, Crawford went 9-16 with a 4.36 ERA, but what the right-hander importantly brought to the Red Sox's rotation was reliability.
He made 33 starts, which was tied for the most in the American League, all while tallying 183⅔ innings.
Without Crawford, the Red Sox starters have a 4.29 ERA this season, ranking 22nd in MLB.

The 29-year-old Crawford is far from the only player the Red Sox have lost this season.
Slugging first baseman Tristan Casas, while running to first base, ruptured his left patellar tendon in May.
On top of that, Alex Bregman will not return until the All-Star break with a right quad issue, while outfielder Masataka Yoshida has been out all season after undergoing labrum surgery in his right shoulder in the offseason and getting shut down in spring training.

Then, earlier this month, the Red Sox traded away superstar Rafael Devers to the Giants in a polarizing move.
Through all of the injuries and the blockbuster trade, the Red Sox are sitting at 40-41 heading into Wednesday's game, though top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer are now being given a chance as the team looks to right the ship.

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Gives Injury Update on Roki Sasaki

Dodgers' Dave Roberts Gives Injury Update on Roki Sasaki originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Dodgers rookie phenom Roki Sasaki has been on the injured list since early May with a right shoulder impingement, and manager Dave Roberts is providing a more positive update on Sasaki's condition compared to the one he gave nearly three weeks ago. Advertisement "He's just not feeling that he can kind of ramp it up, so I gather that we're trying to hold the baseball a little bit until he feels like we can get going again," Roberts said last month. According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, Roberts has a bit more encouraging outlook on Sasaki's condition. Roberts said that Sasaki is "feeling really good," which is a good sign that the starting pitcher could be making progress in his recovery. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki (11) looks on in the dougout during the third inning of the game against the Athletics at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Sasaki's MLB debut this season has been a rollercoaster, flashing elite strikeout capability coupled with control issues. He went 1-1 in his eight starts, pitching 34.1 innings with 24 strikeouts, 22 walks, and a 4.72 ERA. Sasaki's struggles adjusting to MLB hitting have only been set back even farther because of the shoulder injury. Advertisement Like many, Joe Mistretta of ClutchPoints is exceptionally high on the pitcher, which makes a full recovery for Sasaki that much more critical to the top team in the National League. "Anyone who has watched Sasaki pitch understands how high his ceiling is," Mistretta said. "The right-handed pitcher could become a Cy Young candidate if he develops consistency at the big league level." Sure, the up-and-down starting pitching for Los Angeles has been a concern this season, but the Dodgers have no reason to rush Sasaki back. He got hurt on May 13 and could be activated by the All-Star break, although it does not seem that promising. Roberts has yet to provide a return date. Mets add pitchers Paul Blackburn and Dedniel Núñez to long injured list

NEW YORK (AP) — Already running low on pitching, the New York Mets added starter Paul Blackburn and reliever Dedniel Núñez to a crowded injured list Thursday in their latest flurry of roster moves. Núñez has a right elbow sprain and could require Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. Blackburn was given medication for a right shoulder impingement and won't throw for three to five days. 'Hopefully that calms the discomfort there a little bit and we'll get him going, so that's relatively good news,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. "As far as the rotation goes — one day at a time. Got to get through today and see where we're at for tomorrow and then for the weekend.' Blackburn (0-3, 7.71 ERA) had been lined up to pitch in the Subway Series this weekend against the New York Yankees at Citi Field. Now, the Mets are undecided for Friday and Sunday — with Frankie Montas scheduled Saturday to make his third start this season since returning from a lat strain. Left-hander Sean Manaea (oblique, elbow) and right-hander Kodai Senga (right hamstring strain) appear to be on the mend, but neither is quite ready to rejoin a tattered rotation. Mendoza said it's possible one or both could return during the last weekend before the All-Star break, July 12-13 in Kansas City. They are among 12 Mets pitchers on the injured list, including fellow starters Tylor Megill (elbow sprain) and Griffin Canning, who is out for the season after rupturing his left Achilles tendon last week. With the pitching staff ravaged recently following a terrific start, New York had lost 14 of 18 heading into Thursday night's game against Milwaukee. Senga threw a bullpen Wednesday and was running and going through fielding practice Thursday. The goal is for him to make a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Saturday or Sunday, according to Mendoza. Manaea has been sidelined since spring training with a right oblique strain, and his most recent rehab outing was pushed back because of elbow discomfort attributed to a bone chip. But he received a cortisone shot and threw 60 pitches over three innings Wednesday evening for Binghamton against Hartford. Assuming he feels good, Manaea is expected to make one more minor league start next Tuesday and then perhaps pitch for the Mets on July 13 at Kansas City in the final game before the All-Star break. 'It is a possibility," Mendoza said. 'Ideally, yes. But again, we're going to take it one day at a time, one outing at a time.' New York recalled right-handers Austin Warren and Justin Hagenman from Triple-A Syracuse, and selected the contract of right-hander Rico Garcia. All three were in the bullpen for Thursday night's series finale versus the Brewers. Right-hander Blade Tidwell was optioned to Syracuse after throwing 4 1/3 innings in relief Wednesday night to earn his first major league victory in the second game of a split doubleheader. Blackburn was placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Monday. With the bullpen taxed so heavily lately, the Mets put him back on the mound following an 89-minute rain delay Saturday in Pittsburgh — and Mendoza acknowledged he thinks that led to the pitcher's injury. When the game resumed, Blackburn gave up five consecutive singles to start the bottom of the second inning before he was removed. 'Obviously, we knew we were asking a lot. But the whole time we were asking feedback from him. He kept throwing, and we knew and he knew that we were only going to ask him for another 35 pitches, right?' Mendoza said. "But yeah, I think it has something to do with it. You hate to see it, but it's where we were at at the time. And again, the back and forth with him, with the trainers, and we just felt like even though it was an hour and a half — you know, it wasn't an easy decision. And here we are now.' ___

2025 Home Run Derby to Celebrate Two Legendary Sluggers

2025 Home Run Derby to Celebrate Two Legendary Sluggers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 MLB All-Star festivities are less than two weeks away in Atlanta, with Truist Park hosting the Home Run Derby on July 14, followed by the All-Star Game on July 15. Advertisement With some of the game's top young sluggers already confirmed, including Ronald Acuña Jr., Cal Raleigh and James Wood, the power stage is set for a thrilling showcase of power. But this year's Derby carries more than just competitive fire; it carries meaning. With the Derby falling on 7/14 and the All-Star Game on 7/15, the dates themselves are a nod to history. Nearly four decades later in 1974, Hank Aaron hit his record-breaking 715th home run, right in Atlanta. In tribute to these milestones and the legends who achieved them, National League participants in the Derby will wear No. 44, Aaron's number, below their names, while American League Players will wear No. 3 to honor Ruth. Advertisement The idea originated with CC Sabathia, who told ESPN, "I just saw the date of the Home Run Derby, and knew that the game was in Atlanta again, and thought it would be special to honor not only Hank, but Babe in that way." With rising stars, hometown heroes and a powerful tribute at its core, the 2025 Home Run Derby is shaping up to be one of the most memorable in recent history.
