Not too many concerns for Otago against Southland

Not too many concerns for Otago against Southland

New Otago coach Mark Brown has given his side a "sneaky B-plus" for their opening effort of his tenure.
They beat Southland 40-31 at the University Oval yesterday afternoon.
The sneaky B-plus was more than fair.
Otago dominated virtually the entire first half and led 26-12 at the break.
They would have received a much higher grade except they suffered bouts of narcolepsy.
The home team muffed too many restarts and Southland pounced.
Hard-working No8 Ethan Macdonald crashed over from close range, and halfback Nic Shearer took off from another quick tap, ran around an Otago pack that had taken the opportunity for a forty winks, and dotted down in the corner.
Both opportunities came about because of some rotten work at the restart.
Brown had a wry smile when asked about the sluggish effort at that phase.
"Yeah, so ironically over the last 10 days, kick-offs are the one thing we hadn't got to, so that showed," he smiled.
"But no real concern on our behalf there. But what it does highlight is how important they are, so they'll get our attention in the next week or two."
Other than that, the first 40 minutes were impressive from Otago.
They controlled possession and territory and scored four tries.
Young fullback Sam Nemec-Vial got two of them.
He stepped off his left foot and ran in from 20m to score his first.
And he finished off another with an acrobatic dive in the corner.
The Green Island player looked dangerous when the ball came his way.
But stand-in first five Sam Gilbert set the tone. He made sound decisions and gave the ball some width.
He got an armchair ride thanks to the pack.
Zingari-Richmond hooker A-One Lolofie had a strong game and scored from a lineout drive.
New recruit Joseva Tamani was solid in the lineout, and blindside Will Stodart hit rucks hard and did well in the set pieces.
Southland scored first after the break.
Otago fumbled the ball close to their line and winger Michael Manson finished off a nice move from a 5m scrum.
But Otago centre Thomas Umaga-Jensen burst free from a ruck, scampered 30m and offloaded to openside Harry Taylor to score.
But the try of the game was scored by Jae Broomfield.
He has shifted south from Canterbury to try his luck with Otago and he showed some good gas.
He ghosted through a gap in the midfield and ran a 50m angle run to the corner.
He outpaced the chasing pack and pushed off the last defender to score a ripper.
Southland centre Issac Te Tamaki scored a late consolation for Southland to narrow the margin.
But Otago dominated the fixture when they could keep their eyes open.
"I don't really want to pick out names. I thought collectively they all subbed in and connected with the team and played in the system and took on board what they've been exposed to the last couple of weeks," Brown said.
Otago open their NPC campaign against Southland in Invercargill on August 2. Three players who caught the eye
• Otago have named just one specialist first five and he missed Otago's warm-up against Southland at the University Oval yesterday afternoon. But experienced outside back Sam Gilbert filled in more than admirably for Cameron Millar. The utility back is heading to Ireland at the end of the NPC to play for Connacht. But he demonstrated how useful he will be with a polished effort at pivot.
• Otago fullback Sam Nemec-Vial is uncontracted, but he played with some real spark at the back. He stepped off his left foot and ghosted 20 metres to score his first. And he dived over in the corner later in the first half to complete an impressive outing. He has good pace and he is gutsy. Could do with a few more meat pies to fill out those skinny legs.
• Southland spent most of the game on the back foot but scored some nice opportunist tries. The effort of halfback Nic Shearer was pretty impressive. He took a quick tap, ran around an Otago pack that had taken the opportunity to take a nap, and dotted down in the corner.

He has 86 test caps for the All Blacks and has played 126 games for the Chiefs and 22 for Waikato. Southland Football going pink

Southland Football is encouraging all players and supporters to think pink and bring the energy this Saturday, as it dedicates a special round to support breast cancer awareness. Each year, Southland Football hosts at least one charity round to support important causes in the community. In the past, charities have included the likes of Hawthorndale Care Village, Koha Kai, the Heart Foundation, and others. This Saturday, it's all about the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand, and Southland Football is encouraging all players, coaches and supporters to get in behind the cause. Southland Football development officer Leigh Matthews said the intention behind the initiative was simple but powerful: to raise awareness and vital funds for a cause that affects thousands of women and families across Aotearoa and the world. "We want to play our part, not only in supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, but in showing what our football community can do when we rally together," he said. "The inspiration came from my time working with Football South Australia, where each season included a charity round that brought the football community together in a powerful way. I saw firsthand how impactful it was, and I felt it was something special we could bring here to Southland." So far the response from clubs Southland-wide, as well as referees, had been that of real enthusiasm and they were getting set to embrace the special round. "It's also a chance to celebrate women in sport, spotlighting healthy, active role models for our younger generations and helping promote the growth of women's football across the region, Matthews said. "I'm genuinely hopeful that we'll see plenty of pink socks, shirts, beanies and smiles around the grounds this weekend and that this is just the beginning of an annual tradition that gets bigger and more meaningful every year." Pink-themed socks and laces will be for sale on Saturday, alongside a fundraising barbecue, and there is also a raffle and a Givealittle page. Money raised will go towards breast cancer awareness and research. For Football Southland development and operations manager Iain Walker, the cause is particularly close to home, after he lost his wife Fiona to breast cancer earlier this year. "This type of cancer can be the most treatable but sadly often it's not," he said. "I won't be alone in having lost someone near and dear to me. It touches a large number of New Zealanders, as do several other forms of this disease, and therefore we need to keep pushing forward with the endless research that continues to help others. "I'd really encourage everyone to get out enjoy the day, and give what you can afford for a great cause. We have a great football community who support each other in times of need — I know that from experience, and not just my own — so this a great opportunity to keep that momentum going." Lienert-Brown latest to look to Japan

Anton Lienert-Brown has had an interrupted season due to injury, but chalked up his 86th cap for the All Blacks last weekend. Veteran All Blacks midfielder Anton Lienert-Brown will miss Super Rugby next year as part of a sabbatical to play in Japan. It is allowed for in his current contract, which is valid until the end of 2026. His new contract announced today will see him available for the All Blacks, the Chiefs in Super Rugby and Waikato in the NPC until the end of 2028. The 30-year-old chalked up his 86th cap for the All Blacks in their third test against France in Hamilton last Saturday. He will team up with Ardie Savea at the Kobe Steelers for Japan's League One competition, where his former mentor at the Chiefs, Dave Rennie, is coach and former All Blacks and Chiefs teammate Brodie Retallick is captain. Lienert-Brown and Savea will return home after their stints in Japan and be available for the All Blacks' July series. Lienert-Brown has had an interrupted season, after a month out with a leg injury followed by a few months recuperating from a broken collarbone suffered against Perth-based Western Force in April. "I'm excited to re-commit to New Zealand Rugby through to 2028. This year's been frustrating with injuries outside of my control but pulling on the black jersey again last Saturday reminded me just how special this journey really is. "Representing Waikato, the Chiefs, and my country is something I never take for granted. My decision to stay reflects my commitment - not just to the teams I play for, but to giving everything I've got to the work that lies ahead." Lienert-Brown has played 126 games through 12 Super Rugby campaigns and 22 matches for Waikato. All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson said Lienert-Brown was a player who embodied the values of the All Blacks jersey. "His experience, composure, and clarity in the midfield are hugely valuable. He's overcome injury setbacks in recent years and has shown real resilience. "We're thrilled to have him locked in through to 2028, and the experience he'll gain in Japan will only enhance his game and leadership."
