While local sources and activists say 'hulla' parties had been driving away a herd of 20 elephants across the tracks when the accident took place, forest department denied this. The herd, sources claimed, was being driven towards Midnapore forest division. "While most were successfully sent to the other side, three (including an adult female and a sub-adult male) slowed down probably due to the presence of calf and were run over," alleged an activist.
SAGE Foundation's Sagnik Sengupta said the organisation had written to the chief wildlife warden demanding a probe into the alleged use of 'hulla' parties. "Preliminary reports suggest that they were recklessly chasing the herd towards the tracks without any strategic coordination. This is the third instance since July 2023 when elephants have died in Jhargram due to unscientific handling of conflict," Sengupta added.
Joydip Kundu of SHER also called for a probe.
Jhargram DFO Umar Imam said: "This area is known as Bashtola elephant route. Jumbos from Midnapore cross over to Jhargram from here and there's movement of elephants in the area throughout the year. At least 25 to 30 jumbos were roaming the area since Thursday. Twice or thrice a week, we communicate with railway officials about jumbo movement. This time, too, messages were shared with them on WhatsApp around 10.45pm on Thursday.

However, it seems no speed limit was maintained. We have sought the speed logbook," he added.
Chief wildlife warden Sundeep Sundriyal seconded Imam's version. Forest department has also lodged a complaint of railway negligence in a Jhargram court.
South-Eastern Railway has initiated an inquiry into the incident. Senior SER officials said they were not adequately alerted about the movement of the elephant herd.
"Only a casual WhatsApp text was dropped by a forest staff in a messaging group of forest, railway officials and wildlife enthusiasts around 11pm that three pachyderm herds were passing. The incident happened at 1am. It was too late to impose speed restrictions — so many trains were running on the section," a senior SER official said.
Another said, "The protocol is to inform the railways at least five or six hours in advance about such movement of elephants. Immediately steps would have been taken to run the trains on very slow speed. We will get to know what actually happened and with whom the fault lies, once the probe report in submitted."
Following the deaths, five elephants from the herd returned to the area in the morning. Forest department suspects the herd will return to the area searching for their companions.

Dehradun: Amidst the ongoing probe into an alleged religious conversion case registered around 10 days ago in Dehradun, police on Saturday filed a second case involving six persons, including a woman, for allegedly converting a 28-year-old woman and attempting to send her to the UAE with "forged documents to marry a Muslim man". According to Dehradun SSP Ajai Singh, police have also found links to Egypt-based radical organisation, Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned in many countries. The accused were identified as Abdul Rehman alias 'Mahendra Pal Singh'; his two sons Abdul Rahim and Abdullah, all residents of Delhi; Abdur Rehman alias 'Rupendra Singh' from Dehradun; Aisha alias 'Krishna Sahu' from Goa; and Suleiman, currently staying in Dubai and originally from Dehradun. Five of them were already arrested by UP police," the SSP said. He added: "During the first case in Ranipokhari around 10 days ago, a 21-year-old woman, 'Mariam', who was being influenced by perpetrators of this organised gang, was counselled by police. The friend also invited her to her home in Kashmir about a year ago during Ramzan, claimed Sumaiyya. She met a few Kashmiri men there who made her join the aforementioned group. Sumaiyya was thereafter introduced to a Pakistani-developed app termed 'Ludo Star', and came in contact with some people from the neighbouring country including a cleric Tanveer Ahmed. Sumaiyya claimed that "Ahmed offered to teach her the Quran and Arabic language through online classes". Through the app, she also became friends with another Dubai-based Pakistani, Tehseen, through whom she said she paid fee to Ahmed for the classes. As per his suggestion, she deposited the money in the bank account of Dubai-based Dehradun resident Suleiman who then transferred it to Ahmed's account in Pakistan. The SSP further shared that one of the accused, Abdul Rehman, who came in contact with her on the Whatsapp group, insisted she come to Delhi to undergo the official procedure of changing her faith due to the existing UCC and the anti-conversion law in place in the hill state. She went to Delhi thrice during which Abdul, through his two sons, got forged IDs including Aadhaar with her converted name Sumaiyya and his Delhi address imprinted on it. It was also found that the accused lured her by offering to get her paintings sold in the UAE. The three had allegedly planned to send her to the UAE after availing a passport with her new forged ID, but she was traced down by police. A probe is on to bring the five arrested accused to Uttarakhand as per legal procedure, said Singh.

Udupi court cancels bail of accused for violation
The Udupi Principal District and Sessions Court cancelled the bail granted to Raghavendra Kanchan alias Raghu Barikeri based on a report filed by the Kota police which stated about the latter being named as the accused in two cases of 'hate content' posts. In the statement, the Kota police said Kanchan was among the persons arrested on February 7, 2019, in connection with a murder case. The police filed the charge sheet, and he was named as accused No. 9. The case was pending with the trial court for recording the statement of accused. On June 28, 2023, the High Court allowed his criminal petition and granted bail. It directed Kanchan not to leave jurisdiction of the trial court without permission and not to indulge in criminal activities. A case was registered by the Mangaluru police against him for allegedly posting an old video of SDPI leader Riyaz Farangipet's speech in Hindu Jagaran Vedike Kota WhatsApp group and hurting communal sentiments. As he continued to indulge in criminal activities, a separate case was registered at the Kota police station. Based on the police report, the Udupi court passed an order to cancel bail to Kanchan. The Udupi police will initiate similar action if criminal elements on bail continue with criminal activities, the police said.

Mumbai: In a case that serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by women in the workplace, particularly when their duties require them to interact with clients in unsupervised settings, a magistrate's court recently convicted and sentenced a 54-year-old Malad businessman to one year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for outraging the modesty of a female bank employee who had to visit his home. The woman, a deputy manager, visited the accused, Narendra Sagvekar's residence for address verification as part of the bank's account opening protocol. "In this case, I came to the conclusion that when the informant was on her duty and went to the house of the accused for his address verification, the accused was at home alone and applied force on her and outraged her modesty. The informant is a bank employee. At the time of the incident, the informant was 27 years old. Admittedly, it is an offence of moral turpitude. The accused committed an offence of moral turpitude, therefore, he is not entitled to get the benefit of probation," Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate BN Chikne said while refusing to let off the accused on a bond of good behaviour. The accused was also fined Rs 1,000. He was out on bail. There is no motive at all for the informant to lodge a false complaint against the accused," the magistrate said. The incident occurred on Nov 27, 2020. Sagvekar visited the branch on Nov 26, 2020, to open a bank account. He provided his PAN card and Aadhaar card but failed to produce a photograph. As per bank rules, address verification at the customer's residence was required. On Nov 27, 2020, at approximately 12.30 pm, the woman arrived at the accused's residence. The accused was alone. After the procedures when she was about to leave, the accused "suddenly used criminal force on the informant with an intent to outrage her modesty by kissing her on her neck, cheek and holding her tightly, he was touching her whole body". The woman pushed him away and managed to escape. She returned to her bank branch and reported the ordeal to the bank manager, operations manager, and a colleague. She subsequently lodged a report with the Malad Police Station. The accused was arrested on De 17, 2020, and released on bail two days later. During the trial, the prosecution examined four witnesses, including the woman and other bank employees.
