Rlys, forest blame game as calf among 3 jumbos mowed down by Jan Shatabdi in Jhargram
Jhargram/Kolkata: A male calf was among three elephants killed after they were hit by an allegedly speeding Barbil-Howrah Jan Shatabdi Express in the early hours of Friday near Jhargram's Manikpara. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Rail services were paused for a few hours following the accident. While local sources and activists say 'hulla' parties had been driving away a herd of 20 elephants across the tracks when the accident took place, forest department denied this. The herd, sources claimed, was being driven towards Midnapore forest division. "While most were successfully sent to the other side, three (including an adult female and a sub-adult male) slowed down probably due to the presence of calf and were run over," alleged an activist. SAGE Foundation's Sagnik Sengupta said the organisation had written to the chief wildlife warden demanding a probe into the alleged use of 'hulla' parties. "Preliminary reports suggest that they were recklessly chasing the herd towards the tracks without any strategic coordination. This is the third instance since July 2023 when elephants have died in Jhargram due to unscientific handling of conflict," Sengupta added. Joydip Kundu of SHER also called for a probe. Jhargram DFO Umar Imam said: "This area is known as Bashtola elephant route. Jumbos from Midnapore cross over to Jhargram from here and there's movement of elephants in the area throughout the year. At least 25 to 30 jumbos were roaming the area since Thursday. Twice or thrice a week, we communicate with railway officials about jumbo movement. This time, too, messages were shared with them on WhatsApp around 10.45pm on Thursday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, it seems no speed limit was maintained. We have sought the speed logbook," he added. Chief wildlife warden Sundeep Sundriyal seconded Imam's version. Forest department has also lodged a complaint of railway negligence in a Jhargram court. South-Eastern Railway has initiated an inquiry into the incident. Senior SER officials said they were not adequately alerted about the movement of the elephant herd. "Only a casual WhatsApp text was dropped by a forest staff in a messaging group of forest, railway officials and wildlife enthusiasts around 11pm that three pachyderm herds were passing. The incident happened at 1am. It was too late to impose speed restrictions — so many trains were running on the section," a senior SER official said. Another said, "The protocol is to inform the railways at least five or six hours in advance about such movement of elephants. Immediately steps would have been taken to run the trains on very slow speed. We will get to know what actually happened and with whom the fault lies, once the probe report in submitted." Following the deaths, five elephants from the herd returned to the area in the morning. Forest department suspects the herd will return to the area searching for their companions.

Coromandel and Dhauli expresses to be back in Hwh station
Kolkata: Coromandel Express will be back at Howrah station from Aug 25, besides theShalimar-Puri Dhauli Express, South-Eastern Railway (SER) officials said on Friday. Terminals for these trains were shifted to Shalimar from Howrah three years back to decongest Howrah station. However, the authorities have now decided to shift the terminal for 12841/12842 Shalimar-MGR Chennai Coromandel Express and 12821-12822 Shalimar-Puri Dhauli Express from Shalimar to Howrah. Coromandel Express will leave Howrah station at 3.10 pm and arrive at the terminal at 11 am. Dhauli Express will leave Howrah station at 9.10 am and arrive at the terminal at 7.30 pm. Though SER did not cite the reasons behind reverting to Howrah station, sources said the authorities have been receiving complaints of inconvenience, especially from elderly passengers and patients, who travel by Coromandel Express to Chennai for treatment. They face difficulties in boarding the trains to southern India from Shalimar due to transport hurdles. The satellite station is being developed in phases but lags behind as far as the availability of cabs is concerned.

Railway Ministry to deploy drone on pilot basis to monitor uneven loading in freight trains
New Delhi, The Railway Ministry has asked three zones to procure drones on contractual basis for a pilot project to monitor and detect uneven loading in freight trains at various terminals. According to experts, uneven loading has been one of the major causes of freight train derailment and the ministry wants to deploy drone technology to leverage its benefits in ensuring safety of train operations. 'With reference to the growing emphasis on safety, efficiency and technological modernization of freight operations, drone-based monitoring has been identified as a viable solution for monitoring of the loading process, to enhance detection and prevention of uneven loading of wagons at the terminals,' the ministry said in a letter dated June 10 addressed to three divisions South Eastern Railway , South East Central Railway and South Western Railway . 'Competent Authority in this regard has decided to nominate SER, SECR and SWR to undertake pilots for deploying 'Drone as a Service' to be procured on contract basis for real-time surveillance, monitoring and detection of uneven loading at selected terminals,' it added. Highlighting the project's objective, the ministry said these zones will monitor load distribution patterns in loaded wagons, provide real-time aerial imagery/load profiling before and enable automated detection of unsafe loading or load imbalance through visual analytics. 'The Scope of Work may include but not be limited to the provision of drone-based services for monitoring and detection of uneven loading, deployment of qualified drone operators with appropriate safety certifications, aerial scanning of rakes before dispatch from terminals, real-time transmission of video feed and images and monthly submission of data logs and exception reports," it added. Urging the other departments to use drones for survey of difficult locations, the ministry said that they should identify one or two terminals handling substantial traffic and where high incidents of uneven loading are reported. 'Pilot may be conducted for three months. Zonal Railways are requested to initiate the process at the earliest and at the end of the pilot, a detailed evaluation report including its feasibility for Pan-India replication may be submitted at the earliest possible,' it added.
