Marco Rubio to meet Sergey Lavrov in Malaysia amid rising Russia-Ukraine war
US secretary of state
Marco Rubio
is set to meet Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday in Malaysia, on the sidelines of the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting, as tensions between Washington and Moscow deepen over the conflict in Ukraine.
Marco Rubio has arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, marking his first visit to the region to attend Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Post-Ministerial Conference during the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting, which brings together the ten Asean member states along with key diplomatic partners, including Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, the European Union, and the United States.
This will mark the second face-to-face meeting between Rubio and Lavrov, the first being in Saudi Arabia in February this year.
Rubio and Lavrov's meeting comes shortly after US resumed shipments of defensive weapons to Ukraine. The deliveries had been on hold pending a review by the Pentagon of domestic munitions stockpiles, a pause that was welcomed by Moscow. However, the renewed supply of arms comes amid intensifying Russian aerial assaults on Ukrainian targets, further straining relations between the two powers.
President Donald Trump, speaking at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, voiced strong criticism of President Putin.

'Putin is not, he's not treating human beings right,' Trump said. 'It's killing too many people. So we're sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine, and I've approved that.'
Rubio is expected to meet with other foreign ministers attending the forum, many of whom represent countries that could soon be impacted by new US trade tariffs. However State Department officials indicated that tariffs and trade will not be Rubio's primary focus during the meetings. Instead, the Trump administration hopes the talks will center on maritime safety and security in the South China Sea.

SCO visit: 'Avoid trade roadblock,' says EAM Jaishankar - Is it pointed towards China's curbs on critical minerals export?

NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Monday called upon China to avoid "restrictive trade measures and roadblocks" in an apparent reference to Beijing's move to impose curbs on export of critical minerals. "As neighbouring nations and major economies in the world today, there are various facets and dimensions of our ties. Measures towards normalizing our people to people exchanges can certainly foster mutually beneficial cooperation. It is also essential in this context that restrictive trade measures and roadblocks are avoided. I hope to discuss these issues in further detail," he said in his opening address during his meeting with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi. The discussions were held just hours after Jaishankar arrived in China for a two-day visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conclave. This marks his first trip to the country since the sharp decline in bilateral relations after the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020. He also pressed upon the need to address border issues, while also highlighting the progress made on the same in the past nine months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Excellency, we have made good progress in the past nine months for the normalization of our bilateral relations. It is a result of the resolution of friction along the border and our ability to maintain peace and tranquility there. This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and for smooth development of bilateral relations. It is now incumbent on us to address other aspects related to the border, including de-escalation," he said. China, which commands a dominant share of the global rare earth magnet supply, has imposed export restrictions, tightening access to these critical minerals essential for producing automobiles, electric vehicles (EVs), and renewable energy infrastructure. Rare earth magnets play a critical role in high-tech industries, powering everything from electric vehicles and smartphones to wind turbines and defense equipment.

BRS functionary K Kavitha gets court nod for US travel

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday allowed the plea of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) functionary K Kavitha seeking permission to travel to Los Angeles between Aug 16 and Sept 2 to secure admission for her younger son in a university. The court of special judge Dig Vinay Singh was hearing two applications filed by the BRS leader seeking the release of her passport and permission to travel abroad. "The right to travel abroad has been considered to be an important facet of the right to life and liberty guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution, and there is no reason as to why the applicant (Kavitha) should be deprived of that right, having considered all the facts and circumstances, including the fact of the applicant being on bail in both the matters," the court said. The court rejected the argument of the directorate of enforcement and CBI that Kavitha may flee from justice, noting that she has deep roots in society. "Regarding the apprehension of the prosecuting agencies as to the availability of the accused and the progress of the trial, adequate directions can be passed while allowing the applications," the court said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Criciúma (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo The court said that Kavitha was also permitted to travel abroad by the present court on May 3, and during the travel period, she did not misuse the liberty or engage in conduct which could prejudice the trial. The judge also imposed the terms and conditions as mentioned in its earlier order. Kavitha was released on bail by the Supreme Court on Aug 27, 2024, and one of the conditions imposed in the bail order was that she would deposit her passport in the court.

Xinyu's Political Stance Sparks Controversy in K-Pop: The One China Principle Explained

Chinese member Xinyu of the multinational girl group tripleS When Korean Wave Meets Politics - The Xinyu Controversy Storm Imagine casually scrolling through your favorite K-pop idol's messages and suddenly getting hit with a political bombshell that could end careers. That's exactly what happened when Xinyu, the Chinese member of the 24-member girl group tripleS, went full political mode on the fan communication platform fromm. The Beijing-born idol didn't just dip her toes into controversial waters - she straight-up dove in. In messages written in Chinese and auto-translated to Korean, Xinyu boldly declared, "Macau has been Chinese from the beginning. Hong Kong and Taiwan are the same." But the real shocker was her reaction when fans warned her about potential backlash. "People who don't agree with me shouldn't follow me on fromm. Why should I be scared of being scolded? Did I say something wrong?" she wrote with the kind of confidence that would make even the most seasoned politicians nervous. This level of boldness is like someone in our country making extremely sensitive statements about Kashmir and asking "What's the problem?" - that's how daring this was. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em São Gonçalo (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo The "One China" Principle - A Political Minefield in K-Pop For those wondering what all the fuss is about, Xinyu's statements align perfectly with China's "One China" policy. This principle essentially claims that mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau are all one unified country under Chinese government rule. For us as young people, this might feel a bit complex. It's similar to saying all states in our country form one federal nation, but the situation is much more sensitive. Taiwan has a virtually independent government and economic system, while Hong Kong claims autonomy even under "One Country, Two Systems." It's like the complexity of Puducherry or Delhi having completely different political systems while still being part of our nation. This policy became a massive source of tension, especially after the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests when people literally took to the streets opposing Beijing's growing influence. Most celebrities would avoid this kind of political hot potato, but Xinyu grabbed it with both hands. This isn't the first time Chinese K-pop idols have found themselves in this predicament. In 2019, several Chinese stars including Jackson Wang from GOT7 and Lay Zhang from EXO publicly supported the "One China" policy during the Hong Kong protests. It's almost like a rite of passage for Chinese idols - support the policy or face consequences back home. Lay Zhang from EXO The Bigger Picture - When Entertainment Meets Politics This incident reflects the broader challenges facing the K-pop industry's relationship with China. Since 2016, China has maintained unofficial sanctions on Korean cultural content following South Korea's deployment of the THAAD missile defense system. It's been a rollercoaster relationship with occasional thaws followed by sudden freezes. The situation is particularly complex for groups like tripleS, which includes members from various countries, including Nien, who has dual Taiwanese/Vietnamese citizenship. Imagine how awkward group meetings must be when one member is essentially claiming another member's homeland as part of her own country.
