Marlow Is Monte Carlo's First British Restaurant

Marlow is Monte Carlo's first British restaurant. Over the last few years, Monaco's culinary scene has shifted. Renowned for its glitz and glamour, Monte Carlo recently begun establishing itself as a culinary hotspot, drawing in visitors for its abundance of dining offerings, including popular restaurants like Pavyllon, The Blue Bay, Yoshi and Le Grill. Amazonico, COYA, BeefBar and Nobu also have locations in the capital. To further evolve its offerings, the destination just opened its first British restaurant, Marlow. 'British cuisine is in our DNA at Marlow,' says Bryan Gaillard, director of Marlow restaurant at Monte-Carlo Sociétes des Bains de Mer, in an email interview with Forbes."We believe that great food should be honest, seasonal, and elevated without ever feeling pretentious. That's exactly what we serve: beautifully crafted dishes for everyone, for any moment, whether it's a quiet dinner for two or a table full of friends raising a glass to something worth celebrating." Taking inspiration from English private members' clubs and the Mediterranean sun, it intends to serve food that feels effortless and can be enjoyed over a conversation. 'It's been so rewarding to see guests breaking bread together, passing dishes around and diving into flavors that nod to our British roots while still feeling fresh and relevant,' says Gaillard. 'Our signature plates are the soul of the menu, those familiar, bold flavors that keep the heart of Marlow unmistakably British, but we never let it feel heavy-handed. It's about striking the right note, and I think we've found it.' The British restaurant is known for its relaxed, shareable style of dining. The British restaurant is known for its relaxed, shareable style of dining. It offers English-inspired dishes, beginning from 8:30 am with a full English breakfast until midnight. Other menu specialities include Beef Wellington and truffle purée or the Marlow pie with walnuts, honey, mushrooms, rocket and Cheddar. On Sundays, the spot has brunch with complimentary champagne, and there is also an English tea time with pastries, finger sandwiches and scones. At the end of the day, the venue shifts into a sleek bar, complete with a cocktail menu that takes inspiration from British classics (like the Vesper Martini, Hanky Panky or Milk Punch). 'When it comes to drinks, I wanted our cocktail offering to stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in London, modern, clean, and driven by what's in season,' explains Gaillard. 'It's something we've worked hard to perfect, and now, having it all enjoyed on our beautiful new terrace overlooking the Mareterra esplanade feels like the missing piece. There's nothing quite like sipping a perfectly made cocktail as the Riviera sun sets. It's exactly the experience we envisioned when building out this concept.' Alongside British classic cocktails, Marlow will also serve a selection of whiskies, cognacs and rums and have a cigar cellar. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there will be live music playing in the venue. Marlow is the latest addition to over twenty-five different restaurants from SBM, ranging from Café de Paris to Le Louis XV. Located within the newly opened eco-district of Mareterra, the all-day dining concept is the first restaurant to open within the new space.

'Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.' Except maybe viral fame.

The sound of the summer is actually not a song — it's an ad. 'Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday,' a catchphrase from the British airline's 2024 ad, mixed with English singer Jess Glynne's 2015 hit 'Hold My Hand,' has been used by more than 1.2 million users on TikTok, where it's become a viral hit in recent months. Searches for Jet2 holiday have also spiked in the last month, according to Google trends. The original Jet2 ad, which first appeared on the company's YouTube page last year, shows a family of four as they catch a Jet2 plane to their beachside summer vacation. Now, audio from the ad is being used more ironically in videos from users who juxtapose the soundbite with footage of chaotic holiday experiences. From catastrophic weather at picture-perfect resorts to passengers misbehaving on flights, the videos often document travel-related setbacks. No one was more surprised by the popularity of the ad than British actor Zoë Lister, the voice behind the viral audio. She recorded the ad about 18 months ago. 'Somebody sent me a video yesterday of Joe Jonas using the sound,' she told NBC News in a recent video interview. 'I was like, 'Oh, that's massive!'' Lister, who introduced herself as the actor behind the audio in a recent TikTok video, said it's been especially interesting to see the soundbite pick up in the United States, where Americans use the word 'vacation' rather than 'holiday.' 'They don't even know what Jet2 holiday is,' she joked. 'They don't have holidays, they have vacations. Holidays are like Christmas, right? But they have got so on board with the joyful silliness of it.' 'Going viral for something just that is really funny and joyful … that's quite a wonderful experience,' Lister added. One of the first videos to use the audio and garner millions of views was from a user who uploaded footage of what appears to be a camel attacking the person, according to meme database KnowYourMeme. Since being posted on TikTok in November 2024, the video has amassed 3.8 million views. Jet2 picked up on the popularity of the audio in the spring, posting a video on TikTok offering a giveaway for people who uploaded videos partaking in the trend. The travel company is known in the United Kingdom for offering low-cost vacations for British travelers, and providing charter flights to popular holiday destinations around the world, mostly in Europe. As for Glynne, Lister said the pop star also 'did not ask for any of this' fame. The singer's 'Darling, hold my hand' line from her song is now associated with the Jet2 phrase. The two met during a Capital FM radio appearance in London on Tuesday, which Lister described as a 'wild' moment in her life. She's 'a super cool mega pop star and I'm this like cheeseball,' Lister said. Lister, a mother of two, said she's trying to figure out how to navigate the newfound fame. She was a familiar face to many in the U.K.: From 2006-2017, she played Zoe Carpenter in the popular teen soap opera 'Hollyoaks,' which aired on Channel 4. But the virality has boosted her profile more, especially after she posted the TikTok video. 'What started happening this last week, which has been really bizarre, is when I've been on a train or in a cafe and I can hear people watching [the meme],' she said. 'And, last Friday I was out with my husband, because we were celebrating our anniversary. And the girls on the next table were literally recording their own 'nothing beat the Jet2 holiday' into their phone.' Her husband then asked the group recording the video if they would want to meet the 'the woman that does the voice.' 'It was actually such a brilliant, fun, joyful moment,' Lister said. 'And everyone was like excited. And we have photos. It was really fun.' She's hoping the virality will help her expand her horizons professionally. 'I've been planning a podcast for a while and I'm happy that now I've got more of a platform in which to launch something like that,' she said. 'I've got lots of things that I'd like to do creatively and I hope that this sort of infamy will help launch things.'

I paid less than $200 for a one-star hotel in a top beach destination — here's what I got for my money

How much comfort are you willing to forgo for a cheap vacation? A British tourist spent less than $200 for one night at a one-star hotel in Miami, Florida — and he took viewers along to see what he got for the very low price. Simon Wilson, who regularly shares his travel adventures on social media, posted an Instagram Reel with over 2 million views documenting his stay at the unidentified establishment in the high-end area of South Beach, where rooms regularly rent for upwards of $500 per night. 3 South Beach is notoriously expensive and one of the priciest areas in Miami. miami2you – Wilson walked into the establishment without a reservation and asked the receptionist for a room with one bed. He revealed that he had looked at reviews online, finding that they were all negative. When he asked why the hotel had such poor reviews, the worker replied only with a sly shrug. The cost of the room with one bed for one night was $149 plus tax, which came out to $184.86. On top of that, the hotel charged a $50 deposit that would be refundable at checkout. In total, Wilson had to dish out $234.86 upon arrival at the one-star hotel. The budget lodgings were revealed to have 80 rooms — and only nine of them were occupied the night Wilson showed up. When Wilson asked the receptionist about amenities, he discovered that there were none — no swimming pool, sauna, breakfast or coffee. All he was getting was the room. 'I have no idea what to expect here,' he said as he opened the door to his room on the first floor. 3 Wilson asked the receptionist, a Brazilian man named Celso, about the amenities at the hotel. @simonjwils/Instagram 'This isn't too bad,' he said. He showed viewers around the room, which included a 'lovely' and small dining table with one chair, bedside cabinets and a remote for the TV on the wall. Moving on to the bathroom, he said the shower/bath looked 'fairly clean' and pointed out that there was a decent amount of soap provided. 'The main thing and the most important thing though is the bed,' he said. 'What's this gonna look like?' After inspecting the pillows and sheets, he deemed it suitable for sleeping. 'I think we might have just had a bargain in South Beach, Miami,' Wilson declared. But people in the comments begged to differ. 'Our man was getting rinsed,' one wrote with a laughing emoji. 'Even half that price would be a rip-off,' someone else said. 'That is a hell of an expensive room considering it is very basic and not even a breakfast or a cup of coffee with it !!!!,' a commenter said. 3 'This isn't too bad,' he said as he entered the room. @simonjwils/Instagram However, many people in the comments also reasoned that the hotel seemed pricey because of its location in South Beach. 'Y'all complaining about the price, but it's expensive in Miami. If you're in South Beach, that's about what it's going to cost,' someone said. 'The price is very normal at last minute in Miami, Florida.. You can't find cheaper than that, either one star or 3 stars,' another wrote. South Beach is notoriously expensive and one of the priciest areas in Miami. According to Radical Storage, premium oceanfront hotels could cost anywhere from $400 to $1,000+ per night during high season. However, booking earlier can result in better prices for visitors. Hotel star rankings are widely used to determine a hotel's quality. In the U.S., a one-star hotel typically means there are only basic room options available with basic accommodations and minimal amenities. These hotels are more about functionality and affordability.
