Lockheed Martin has honoured the achievements of 56 UAE interns at the third annual graduation ceremony for its Centre for Innovation and Security Solutions (CISS) internship programme. The event, held on January 30 at the Marriott Hotel Al Forsan in Abu Dhabi, also welcomed 15 alumni from previous cohorts, reinforcing the company’s dedication to STEM education and human capital development in the UAE.
Originally launched in 2017 with just four students, the CISS internship programme has expanded into a year-round initiative to meet increasing demand. The annual graduation ceremonies, now in their third edition, celebrate students who completed internships across spring, summer and fall terms.
The 2024 cohort featured a diverse group, with 37% women and 55% Emirati nationals. The ceremony, hosted by Gen. John Nicholson (U.S. Army, Ret.), Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin Middle East, and CISS Manager Hala Majeed Al Zargani, highlighted innovative projects developed by the interns. The event was attended by dignitaries, business leaders, academics and members of the diplomatic community, culminating in a certificate presentation.
Nicholson said: 'Developing human capital is essential to building a knowledge-based economy in the UAE. Through our STEM-focused internship programme, we are equipping the next generation with the skills to drive innovation, sustain economic growth, and contribute meaningfully to the aerospace and defence sectors.'
Al Zargani added: 'Our graduates have demonstrated exceptional ingenuity and technical expertise. Their work on real-world projects prepares them to excel in critical industries shaping the future and encourages innovative thinking and problem-solving skills that will be crucial in tackling complex challenges.'
The CISS programme provides hands-on experience in cutting-edge fields, including artificial intelligence for automating foreign object debris identification, defence system modelling and simulation and space exploration initiatives. As part of Lockheed Martin’s commitment to Emiratisation and workforce development, the programme is set to expand further, with plans to double its training capacity in the coming years. Emirati housing and education funds launched

Two allowance funding schemes have been launched, one for housing and the other for education, by the Ministry of Community and Empowerment. The allowances have been set up to support the nation's Social Support and Empowerment Programme, a federal initiative providing monthly support to Emirati families with limited income. The housing allowance is intended for families enrolled in the programme who do not receive any form of government housing assistance. The amount is determined based on the family's size and living conditions, distinguished between those living independently and those sharing accommodation with other households. The allowance also includes flexible terms for orphans and children of individuals serving jail terms. What about the education allowance? The education, or academic excellence, allowance is aimed at high-achieving university students. Students enrolled in accredited higher education institutions in the UAE who maintain a cumulative GPA (the grade given per term) of 3.3 or higher are eligible to receive up to Dh3,200 per month. Students enrolled in accredited UAE institutions through remote learning are also eligible. How to apply Applications can be submitted through the ministry's official digital platform via the social subsidy service. All applications are processed within 21 days of submission. Stepping up support The employment programme is the latest step by the government to provide additional assistance to its citizens. In 2022, President Sheikh Mohamed announced a Dh28 billion ($7.6 billion) social support package to provide lower-income Emirati families with subsidies to pay for essentials including fuel, food and utilities. Under the move, annual financial support for eligible families was raised from Dh2.7 billion to Dh5 billion, with the total social support budget doubling from Dh14 billion. The UAE's social welfare programme for low-income citizens is available to Emirati families whose income is less than Dh25,000 ($6,800) a month. The programme offers Dh5,000 aid a month for citizens over the age of 45, housing allowance up to Dh2,500 a month, university education allowance of Dh3,200 a month to outstanding students and Dh5,000 a month for six months to those who are unemployed. In addition, the government offers an inflation allowance, which covers food, electricity, water and fuel costs.

ADGM's FSRA publishes 2024 annual report, reflecting on year of growth, innovation

ABU DHABI, 24th July 2025 (WAM) -- The Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of ADGM, the international financial centre of the capital of the UAE, has published its 2024 Annual Report, outlining the Authority's key regulatory achievements and underscoring its commitment to delivering a world-class regulatory environment for financial services. The report reflects on a year during which the FSRA advanced its objectives and regulatory priorities significantly, particularly in ensuring that its regulatory framework remained aligned to international standards and the critical area of financial crime prevention. Innovation remained a central focus in 2024, especially in the area of digital assets, where the FSRA introduced a dedicated regulatory framework for fiat-referenced tokens (FRTs), a particular category of stablecoins. The new regime sets clear standards on reserves quality, governance, and redemption rights to ensure financial stability and investor protection. By recognising FRT issuance as a regulated activity, the FSRA has reinforced ADGM's position as a leading hub for responsible financial innovation. Of particular note were proposals to enhance the regulatory framework based on increased alignment with the Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision issued by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), subsequently implemented. Alongside this, a comprehensive ADGM-wide whistleblowing framework was introduced to strengthen transparency and market integrity. In the area of financial crime, the FSRA, alongside other authorities and ministries in the UAE, was instrumental in providing technical input that helped further enhance effective AML and Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT) controls in the country. These efforts contributed significantly towards the removal in 2024 of the UAE from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list. These key legislative and policy initiatives, amongst others, enhanced the regulatory landscape, ensuring resilience, transparency, and innovation within ADGM. Beyond this, the FSRA worked closely with domestic and international partners to shape sound regulation, promote cross-border cooperation, and support national policy objectives. The year was again one of continuing growth for financial services in ADGM as the number of financial services firms licensed by the FSRA rose by 30% to 272 from a year earlier, the largest annual increase to date. The report also highlights the FSRA's efforts to invest in talent development, including the Al Yah Programme for UAE nationals, which continues to combine technical training, soft skills development, and mentorship. Looking forward, the FSRA remains focused on enabling sustainable financial growth, technological agility, and robust market confidence through innovation, collaboration and principled regulation. Emmanuel Givanakis, CEO of the FSRA of ADGM, said, 'As we reflect on the key achievements of 2024, it is clear that the FSRA has made significant strides in enhancing the environment for financial services to thrive in ADGM. This is driven by our commitment to innovation and progressive regulation, whilst maintaining market integrity and investor protection. From streamlining our supervisory focus to continuing to enhance our regulatory framework, including for digital assets and sustainable finance, we have continued to build a trusted, risk-proportionate, and forward-looking regulatory environment. Looking ahead, we remain focused on deepening collaboration with stakeholders to ensure Abu Dhabi, and the UAE more widely, continues to thrive as a leading global financial hub.'
