Sean Payton reacts to Deion Sanders news: 'We're excited for him'

USA Today7 days ago
Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders announced Monday that he battled and beat bladder cancer. He has been cleared to coach without restrictions with the Buffs set to begin fall practices soon.
Across town, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton said he sent a text message to Sanders after he heard the news.
'I'm proud of him, excited for him, happy for him," Payton said. "I consider him a close friend all the way back to when I first entered this league. Unfortunately, I started with Philly and he was in Dallas. Then I went to the Giants. We saw him all the way up until he retired. Then in Dallas when I was there, I had a chance to see his high school team play. Years later, they stopped in New Orleans and had a practice right after we practiced. They were on their way to Florida to open the season in an ESPN2 game. [I] really got to know him.
"Our thoughts are with him because football is better with him. Colorado is better with him. It's impressive to watch him coach and teach. He was calling offensive plays at one point when I met him, and I kind of looked at him with a funny eye, but he enjoyed that. His son was like a sophomore at the time. It was great news to hear yesterday, and I know we're excited for him.'
Sanders, a two-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback, started his coaching career at the high school level before spending three seasons at Jackson State, helping them reach two bowl games. He joined Colorado in 2023 and after going 4-8 in his first season, Sanders helped the Buffaloes improve to 9-4 last fall. Now entering Year 3 in Colorado, Sanders will look to improve on his 40-18 overall record at the college level.

Broncos QB Bo Nix provides behind-the-scenes look at offseason training

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix silenced a lot of doubters in 2024 when he led the team to the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. The biggest question coming into 2025 is, "Can he keep this up?" Nix is doing everything in his power to make sure the answer to that question is a resounding yes. Nix released a nine-minute video documenting two days of his offseason training on Monday, giving fans an inside look at what he has been doing to perform better than he did last season. The video, "The In Between: Bo Nix," shows Nix doing various throwing, workout and sprinting drills, all aimed to help Nix remain in top physical form going into 2025. What the video doesn't show is the extra effort Nix put in aside from these sessions. Nix reached out to NFL legends such as Drew Brees, Peyton and Eli Manning and worked with longtime throwing guru Tom House to help improve his form and his habits. "The in between is what nobody really sees, and to me, it's the most important part of the journey," said Nix in the video, speaking about the offseason. "It reflects what you're going to do in the season. So if I don't train hard, if I don't train correctly, if I don't train with the end in mind, I'm just going to go out there and kind of waste time. And yeah, it'll be difficult, it won't be fun in the moment, but when you get in the game, it makes those training moments more special." Nix's training and leadership will be a boon to a hungry Broncos organization with Super Bowl aspirations. Report: Bettors are praying on the Saints' downfall more than any other team

These aren't the type of headlines you want to be reading in August, but it's where the New Orleans Saints are. An offseason of upheaval and several unconvincing seasons have forced the team into a rebuild they never wanted to engage. They have a new head coach with new assistants at almost every position group. They don't have a franchise quarterback. That might be the recipe for landing the top pick in the 2026 NFL draft. And that's a possibility bettors are buying in on. While the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants are also in the mix for teams expected to very, very bad this year, it's New Orleans drawing the most attention on the betting market. Per Mike Florio of NBC Sports, who cites data from DraftKings, "The Saints have drawn 46 percent of the bets and 52 percent of the handle. The Browns, in contrast, have 12 percent of the bets and 13 percent of the handle. The Giants, at 6-1, has 11 percent of the bets and 12 percent of the handle." Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is a proud man. The teams he's built have never lost enough games to pick first overall, and New Orleans hasn't picked top-five since 2006, after the Hurricane Katrina-impacted 2005 season ended with a 3-13 finish. His squad has only picked top-ten three times in his 22-year tenure as GM. But this year's forecast is dire. Kellen Moore is unproven as a head coach. Spencer Rattler didn't win any of his seven games last year but has clearly been a better option to start than 26-year old rookie Tyler Shough. The defense Dennis Allen built looked old and slow last season, and D.A. isn't around to call plays anymore. And the Saints face an exceptionally difficult start to the season. Their first four games include a road contest with the Buffalo Bills, Super Bowl favorites in the AFC, as well as three tough NFC West teams: at home against the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, with a coast-to-coast trip to see the Seattle Seahawks. A 1-3 or 0-4 start isn't unlikely. Mathematically, very few teams start 0-2 and qualify for the playoffs. Losing most or all of those first four games might mean digging too deep of a hole for the Saints to climb back out of. And as we've seen here, a lot of bettors are counting on that being the case. It's on Moore and the team he's assembled this summer to prove them wrong.

49ers Land Surprising Odds in Micah Parsons Trade Sweepstakes

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The 2025 NFL season is coming up quickly, but Micah Parsons has stirred up the rumor mill in a huge way. After publicly requesting a trade from the Dallas Cowboys, plenty of speculation has been rising. One team viewed as a potential contender to acquire Parsons is the San Francisco 49ers. Last season, the 49ers missed the playoffs. Just two years ago, they made a run to the Super Bowl before being defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs. San Francisco wants to get back to the big game and win it. Making a blockbuster move to pair Parsons with Nick Bosa would be a huge step in that direction. San Francisco landed tied at No. 5 with the Arizona Cardinals. What Are the Odds for Micah Parsons' Next Team? Cowboys -300 Eagles +1000 Patriots +1000 Chargers +1500 Cardinals +1600 49ers +1600 Rams +1800 Panthers +2200 Jets +2500 Raiders +2500 Parsons would give the 49ers an even more intimidating defense. With Robert Saleh back in town as the team's defensive coordinator, San Francisco is hoping to get back to their defense-first mentality from a few years back. During the 2024 NFL season with the Cowboys, Parsons dealt with some injury issues and played in 13 games. He still racked up 43 total tackles, 12 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a defended pass. In 2023 with a full 17-game season, he racked up 64 tackles, 14 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two defended passes. Read more: Vikings Reveal Major J.J. McCarthy News Before Preseason Opener At 26 years old, Parsons would be a long-term pickup for the 49ers. He wouldn't come cheap, but he would be well worth the investment that it would take to get him. There is still a chance that Dallas refuses to trade Parsons and that the two sides work out a long-term extension. However, if he does force his way out from the Cowboys, San Francisco should be one of the teams trying to make an aggressive move for him. Expect to hear more news about Parsons in the near future. With his trade request now officially out in public, the rumors and speculation will continue gaining steam. For more on the San Francisco 49ers and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
