Vance proud of Guernsey FC squad despite relegation
'We took a risk'
Since Guernsey won promotion to the Isthmian League in 2013 they have often struggled against relegation.Since 2017 they have always finished in the bottom third and were two places off the drop in the previous two campaigns. "You've got significant levels of players playing in this league for a lot of money," explained Vance, whose players are all amateur."It's a tough, unforgiving league, and we've enjoyed the challenges."What we've had to do for, certainly the last six or seven years, is survive, and every year we've done that."We were stagnating for six or seven years, always fighting relegation, let's try and play a different brand of football and bring the youngsters through."We took a risk and need nearly did it, but what it means is we drop down a level obviously."We know it's not going to be easy because Jersey Bulls had been in there four years and haven't got out."So it's going to be tough, but what it does mean is we can perhaps play more front-foot football and that's what we're destined to do and what we're trying to do."
Vance 'all in' to stay as manager
Vance has been the only man to manage Guernsey FC since the club was formed in 2011.He led the club to back-to-back promotions from the Combined Counties League in his first two seasons in charge - as well as making the semi-finals of the FA Vase in 2013. It is a competition that he hopes the club can enter once again next season. "We have to be better than what we were because we got relegated, but what it does is it gives us is new opportunities," Vance said."We're going to look to go into the FA Cup and FA Vase, so it provides more excitement for the fans."And he says he feels he is the right man to lead Guernsey FC forward, even after their recent struggles in the eighth tier."There's a few people that don't really understand it and they don't really get it," he said. "They might want someone else to do it, but I'm here until someone else can do the job."It's not easy and it's a full-time job that isn't a job, if that makes sense."I've got a few more years I can do. I need to find somebody else had to who wants to step up and take us on and I'll walk them through the door."But I'm all in and I think pretty much everyone is, and that's the best thing about it."

On her professional debut, the 21-year-old English player holds a two-shot lead heading into the final day on the Ayrshire coast, having followed opening efforts of 67-65 with another 67 to sit on 17 under par. It would be by no means out of the blue, though. Not when Woad stormed to a six-shot success in the KPMG Irish Women's Open as an amateur earlier this month. And not when she then signed off her career in the non-paid ranks by finishing second in The Evian Championship, one of the majors in the women's game. She rarely misses a fairway and is a wedge wizard. It would be no surprise at all if she finished the job off on Sunday before turning her attention to next week's AIG Women's Open - she was the leading amateur at St Andrews 12 months ago - at Royal Porthcawl. 'Obviously you can't control what people are doing. I'm just going to try and play well and, if I do, I'll be happy tomorrow. 'I don't think you can ever expect to be leading. But I knew my game was good and I was playing well the last, you know, month or so. So, I definitely hoped to be contending. I'm just kind of where I wanted to be.' Two ahead at the halfway stage, Woad was joined at the top of the leaderboard by both Madsen, who almost broke the flagstick with a chip-in eagle at the third, and Hyo Joo Kim at different points on the front nine, but it was never in doubt really that she'd still be at the head of affairs at the end of the day. 'I hit a lot of greens again today and probably the best tee-to-green compared to the last two days. Just didn't hole maybe as many putts but generally hit a lot of good putts. So I can't complain too much.' Having missed out on big pay-days in both Ireland and France, Woad, who turned professional after a lengthy spell as the World Amateur Golf Ranking No 1, will pick up $300,000 if she lifts this trophy. 'I've had some experience sleeping on leads, so I know what to expect,' she said. 'Obviously there will be some nerves, but I'm looking forward to getting going.' Madsen, who is bidding to land a second LPGA title triumph, was in danger of playing herself out of it as she struggled with her driver in the middle of the round before rolling in a monster birdie putt at the 15th then finding the left edge for another gain at the 16th. 'It was fun most of the time,' she said of playing with Woad. The 30-year-old will do so again in the final round but admitted that a dodgy driver was a cause for concern. 'I need that to work if I want to have a shot tomorrow,' she said. 'So, yeah, I'm going to spend half an hour on the range and hopefully it will work.' 'Wasn't hitting it probably as good as I was the first two days,' said the American, who is bidding to land her first win of the season. 'Yeah, three-putted one of the par 5s for par. That kind of always stings a little bit. But, other than that, I made some really good par saves and just didn't really capitalise on some of my good shots. But that's golf. That's okay. I still have tomorrow.' Korda's first outing as professional was ten years ago and, according to her, it was a lot different to Woad's one here. 'My professional debut was not as in the limelight like her,' she said. 'For her to be leading the event is pretty special.' Hearts 3-0 Sunderland: match report & player ratings as clubs honour Craig Gordon
Hearts will head into the new Scottish Premiership season on the back of a convincing win over Premier League Sunderland as the men in maroon ran out 3-0 winners. The day was all about Craig Gordon though as both clubs honoured his service. Unfortunately, the 42-year old was only able to take his place in the starting XI for ten seconds before being replaced by Zander Clark. Hearts opened the scoring after ten minutes with a superb cross from Osin McEntee which was headed past Sunderland stopper Simon Moore in front of the visiting fans by Claudio Braga, bringing his total to four goals for the Jambos since joining this summer. A second change for the hosts came 20 minutes in when Calem Nieuwenhof picked up a knock and was taken off with Blair Spittal his replacement. The Australian's reaction when coming off suggested the move may have been precautionary more than anything especially with his injury history. Hearts had a big opportunity to go 2-0 up on 35 minutes when the ball came to Braga at the back post but the strier, in acres of space, couldn't get it under control and his first touch took it away from him and into the visiting keeper's arms. The first half had very much been played at preseason tempo and neither keeper was given anything other than routine attempts from long range to deal with other than the goal. That being said, Hearts were going toe-to-toe with an English Premier League side and were the better team in the first half. Hearts made two more changes at the break with James Wilson and Michael Steinwender replacing Claudio Braga and Frankie Kent. The hosts came out all guns blazing in the early stage and peppered the Sunderland box with crosses and through balls with Lawrence Shankland eventually flashing an angled shot across the face of goal. Sunderland then had their best chance of the match with a free kick from around 25 yards out. Jenson Seelt was the player who stepped up and got the ball up and over the wall but Clark watched it all the way past the wrong side of the post. The game had become a bit more balanced but Hearts still looked far more likely to get another goal than the Premier League side and so they did when the ball fell to Lawrence Shankland at the edge of the box and the skipper drove it into the far bottom corner with pinpoint accuracy. A superb finish leaving Moore with no chance. Sunderland rang the changes on 70 minutes with nine substitutions all at once while Hearts had opted for a more gradual approach in emptying their bench. Alexandros Kyziridis had replaced Adam Forrester moments before with the young full back having put a decent shift in. Derek McInnes responded to the raft of changes with three of his own as Elton Kabangu, Stephen Kingsley and Alan Forrest replaced Shankland, Spittal and Harry Milne. Forrest almost made an immediate impact after a super run and turn by Kyziridis picked him out at the back post but his shot was deflected behind for a corner which Oisin McEntee got on the end of but drove wide. The game was dying down as the final whistle approached but Hearts managed to put the cherry on top of an excellent pre-season performance when Kyziridis pounced on an error at the back to slot home the Jambos' third. 1 . Arsenal star agrees shock exit ahead of Viktor Gyokeres' £63m arrival
Gabriel Jesus is close to leaving Arsenal having agreed a move to join Brazilian side Flamengo on loan. The former Manchester City star arrived at the Emirates in a £45million deal in 2022 but injuries have been a constant issue during his time in north London. Signed with the intention of leading the Gunners' attack in the no9 role, Jesus' persistent fitness problems long extinguished those hopes with Kai Havertz serving as Mikel Arteta's first choice option up top the last two seasons. Arsenal are poised to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, hoping the Sweden international is the answer to their well-documented problems at the focal point of attack. The club will reportedly then turn their attention to Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze to form part of a fearsome new attack which has already been bolstered by the addition on Noni Madueke this summer. Those changes now look set to trigger Jesus' move away from the Premier League. RTI Esporte report Flamengo have opened talks with Arsenal over a season-long loan move for the 27-year-old with the option to make the move permanent next summer. The Brazilian side are prepared to pay 50 per cent of Jesus' salary which reportedly stands at £260,000-per-week. Crucially, Jesus has yes to the move. The forward is eager to secure as much playing time as possible ahead of next summer's World Cup and impress Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti. Jesus made 27 appearances in all competitions last season with just 13 of those starts. A cruciate ligament tear ended his season in January however, with Arsenal left without a recognised centre forward for the rest of the season when Kai Havertz got injured the following month. Jesus suffered that latest injury in the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United in January, requiring surgery which ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. Arsenal have provided no clear indication of when the player will be available to play again, not included in the 30-man squad that flew out to Asia for pre-season tour games against AC Milan, Newcastle United and Tottenham.
