Angry residents in Hanover Park have vowed to find the killer of a 75-year-old woman after she was found murdered in her bed on Wednesday following a burglary.
Police were called to the Surburg Walk home of well-loved resident, Mary Douman, after her body was discovered by her son who had been working night shift.
Residents mobilised as soon as news spread of the tragedy and vowed to track her killer if police didn't.
They said they would do so by searching each premises in the community for the stolen items, including a mountain bike.
They also called on relatives to hand over the murderer over to police.
Police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooim said: 'The circumstances surrounding this incident are now the subject of an investigation by the South African Police Service. Philippi police responded to a complaint on July 23. Upon arrival at the crime scene in Surburg Walk in Hanover Park at about 8:15am, they found the body of an adult woman inside the house. The victim aged 75 was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. According to reports the son of the deceased left the house for work on Tuesday July 22 at 6:30pm. Upon his return this morning at about 7:30am, he found the victim on the bed with her face on the pillow and the house in disarray."
Philippi police are investigating cases of murder and house robbery.
Resident and community activist, Brian Jephta, said they were shocked by the murder.
'We have experienced a lot of gang violence and shootings in Hanover Park and I have personally written to the City's JP Smith and Community Safety MEC, Anroux Marais about this.
'It's alleged that gang members were seen on camera footage and took bicycles from the premises and it must have been that she caught them and then they murdered her.
'I have received numerous messages from people appealing to policing, that many previous police are keen to come back and help.'
Another resident, who spoke on a loud speaker in a video shared on social media as the body of Douman was being prepared to leave to the mortuary, said they were keen to make a citizen's arrest and carry out a house to house search.
'I respect Aunty Mary, I grew up in front of her,' he said.
'This is nonsense that people can just break in and do what they want to.
'We are going to come in and we are going to search every yard and we will look for that mountain bike.
'That bike is in this area.
'That is what we will do.
'We are coming for you.
'If it's your brother, bring him in.'

Police captain commits suicide after killing girlfriend and her brother

Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket in Protea after a police captain committed suicide after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her brother. The incident happened in Protea, Soweto, on Saturday night, 26 July. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Gauteng, colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said it is alleged that the group was at home celebrating the birthday of the captain's girlfriend, who is also a police officer. 'The captain reportedly called the girlfriend to the side, and that is when people saw him draw a firearm, and shoot her and her brother dead while three other civilians sustained injuries. He then turned the gun on himself,' Nevhuhulwi explained. Two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened at Protea police station for further investigation. Meanwhile Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni expressed his sadness at this incident and sent his heartfelt condolences to the affected families. 'We give our members these tools to protect themselves against criminals, so it is very disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones. I urge our members to make use of employee health and wellness facilities to assist them to deal with any problems they may be facing, whether work or personal, EHW is always there', Mthombeni said. Recently, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) called on the SAPS to strengthen its mental health and wellness support programmes for officers, following a tragic incident involving one of its own. A female police constable, Ntombethemba Mgidi, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Monday, 22 July, after being arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of two fellow officers in the Mbayimbayi area near Murchison on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last week. Both victims later died from their injuries at Murchison Hospital. 'This act of violence highlights the urgent need for SAPS to intensify internal wellness and psychological support programmes that help members manage relational and emotional pressures,' said POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo. Three men arrested for rhino poaching in KwaZulu-Natal

Three men suspected of violent poaching incident at a KwaZulu-Natal game reserve arrested. Image: Armand Hough Three men believed to be behind a violent poaching incident at a KwaZulu-Natal game reserve have been arrested and found in possession of two unlicensed rifles and a rhino horn. Police in KwaZulu-Natal, working alongside private security companies, apprehended the suspects, aged between 34 and 50, in Paulpietersburg on Saturday, following an intensive manhunt. According to a statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal, the suspects entered a game reserve in the early hours of Friday, wearing face-concealing masks. They accosted and tied up two security guards, robbing them of an R5 assault rifle, a shotgun, and their cellphones. 'They then proceeded to shoot a rhino and removed its horn. While busy with their criminal activity, they were distracted by the sound of an alarm that had been activated,' said Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza. The suspects fled the scene, leaving behind the shotgun next to the rhino's carcass. Police responded swiftly to the alert but found that the suspects had already fled. Officers and private security personnel spent the day combing the area with assistance from community members. The suspects were eventually found hiding in the bush and arrested. 'In their possession was an R5 rifle, a .303 rifle, and a rhino horn,' said Magwaza. 'The police seized the vehicle in which they were travelling.' Video Player is loading. They are due to appear at the Vryheid Magistrate's Court on Monday, 28 July 2025. The arrest comes just weeks after Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Dr Dion George revealed that 103 rhinos were poached across South Africa in the first three months of 2025, with 16 incidents reported in KwaZulu-Natal alone. 'The loss of 103 rhinos to poaching in the first three months of 2025 is a stark reminder of the relentless threat to our wildlife,' Dr George said, while commending efforts that led to zero poaching incidents in four provinces. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment continues to work with SAPS and the NPA to strengthen law enforcement and bail opposition for poaching suspects. THE MERCURY
