Kejriwal to Kick Off ‘Gujarat Jodo' Campaign After By-Poll Wins in Gujarat, Punjab

Hans India01-07-2025
New Delhi: Buoyed by strong performances in the recent assembly by-elections in Gujarat and Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal is set to visit Gujarat on July 2 and 3. Kejriwal will depart from Delhi this evening and begin his tour in Ahmedabad, where he will launch the party's 'Gujarat Jodo' membership campaign.
This visit comes shortly after AAP's candidate Gopal Italia clinched victory in the Visavadar assembly seat in Gujarat, marking a significant political moment for the party in the state. The campaign will be formally launched from Ahmedabad on Wednesday and is expected to expand across Gujarat in the coming weeks. Kejriwal is also scheduled to attend an organizational meeting in Ahmedabad on July 3.
AAP celebrated its success in the June 25 bypolls with a grand event at Kapurthala House, the official residence of Punjab Chief Minister in Delhi. The event was attended by senior leaders from Delhi, Punjab, and Gujarat, including Kejriwal himself. Newly elected MLAs Sanjeev Arora from Ludhiana West (Punjab) and Gopal Italia from Visavadar (Gujarat) were also present at the celebration.
Speaking on the party's performance, Kejriwal stated that the victory in these by-elections sends a clear message, that Aam Aadmi Party is emerging as the only viable alternative to the BJP. He emphasized that while Punjab voters have shown satisfaction with AAP's governance, the people of Gujarat are signaling a strong desire for political change.
'The results show that AAP has become a serious alternative in Gujarat,' Kejriwal said. 'Out of the five assembly seats contested in the by-elections, AAP won two, while Congress, BJP, and TMC managed to win one seat each.'
He also reminded supporters that AAP had initially won the Visavadar seat in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, but the MLA later defected to the BJP, prompting the by-election. With Gopal Italia's return to the seat under the AAP banner, the party sees this victory as a symbolic and strategic win.
AAP leaders believe the by-election results are a 'semi-final' ahead of the 2027 general elections in both Punjab and Gujarat. The Gujarat Jodo campaign is expected to play a central role in expanding AAP's grassroots presence and preparing for future electoral battles in the state.

HC dismisses election petition against Congress MP

Bengaluru: The High Court has dismissed the election petition filed against Davanagere Congress MP Dr. Prabha Mallikarjun, who was accused of electoral malpractice for allegedly distributing 'guarantee cards' to lure voters during the Lok Sabha polls. The petition, filed by BJP's defeated candidate G.S. Gayathri Siddeshwar, sought to nullify Dr. Prabha Mallikarjun's election on grounds of inducement and violation of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. However, Justice M.I. Arun, who presided over the single-judge bench, rejected the petition, holding that the allegations do not amount to a corrupt practice under the law. The court cited a previous ruling related to a similar case against Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan and reiterated that the Congress party's 'guarantee schemes' were part of its official election manifesto. The judge observed that election manifestos reflect a party's policy decisions and not the personal promises of individual candidates. Hence, such guarantees cannot be construed as bribes or inducements under Section 123(1)(A)(B) of the Representation of the People Act.

BJP slams Cong govt over revival of HP lottery scheme

A day after the cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh government approved revival of the state-run lotteries to boost revenue, a war of words began between Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The state cabinet on Thursday gave its nod to initiate the operation of lotteries in the state that has been banned since 1999. Protesting against the same, the BJP announced a major protest in Mandi on August 6 demanding immediate withdrawal of the lottery system while Congress defended the revival of the state lottery. The state cabinet on Thursday gave its nod to initiate the operation of lotteries in the state that has been banned since 1999. Launching a scathing attack at the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led government in state, BJP state president Dr Rajeev Bindal said, 'The Sukhu government promised one lakh government jobs in its very first Cabinet meeting. Now, three years later, they have launched a lottery system and are asking the youth to buy tickets to change their fate. This is not governance—it's exploitation.' Slamming the Congress, Bindal said, 'The Cabinet's decision to reintroduce the lottery system is a mockery of the unemployed. Instead of generating employment opportunities, the government is pushing youth towards gambling and false hope.' Calling lottery system 'anti-people', Bindal questioned the government's rationale behind reviving the lottery, which was previously banned in 1999-2000 by the BJP-led government under Prem Kumar Dhumal, restarted by the Congress in 2004, and again banned in 2007. Now, in 2025, the Congress has once again decided to reintroduce it. State looks at generating ₹100-cr revenue Reeling under debt of more than ₹1 lakh crore, the state government is looking for measures to generate revenue and thus the cabinet has approved revival of state lottery. The finance department made a detailed presentation before the cabinet on the issue of starting operation of lotteries in the hill state to generate additional revenue. The decision has been taken on the recommendation of the Resource Mobilisation Committee, headed by deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri. Lottery was banned in the state by the Himachal government headed by BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal in 1999 and made its violation punishable under Lotteries (Regulation) Act. Cong defends decision Defending the state's decision of reviving the state lottery, technical education minister Rajesh Dharmani said, 'The Union government has no control over online and offline betting and people are losing their hard-earned money in this'. He added, 'On the contrary, the lottery being started by the state government will be under a legitimate process, which will generate revenue for the state'.

Madiga community stages statewide half-naked protest

Bengaluru: In a powerful display of anger and frustration, members of the Madiga community under the banner of the Karnataka Federation of Madiga Organisations staged statewide protests on Thursday, demanding the immediate implementation of internal reservation for Scheduled Castes. Led by former Union Minister A. Narayanaswamy, a large group of protesters gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru and held a half-naked protest, raising slogans against the Congress-led Karnataka government. Speaking at the protest, A. Narayanaswamy issued a stern warning: 'If the government does not implement internal reservation immediately, the Madigas will launch a full-scale civil disobedience movement. We will no longer wait, we will not bow to false promises, and we will not wait until the next election.' He added, 'Protests are being held in all districts of Karnataka today. This is a united fight that transcends political lines. This is not a BJP agitation — it is the collective voice of the oppressed. Is the Karnataka government more concerned about power or about solving the problems of the people? Madigas have not received justice, and our patience has run out. If we hit the streets, we will send this government packing.' Criticizing the bureaucracy, Narayanaswamy further lashed out, saying, 'Since 1976, we have demanded justice. But when we ask the Chief Secretary for a report on this long-standing injustice, he doesn't even bother to call a meeting. Is this what governance looks like?' He rejected the idea of basing reservation merely on population. 'This is about correcting historical injustice — about the oppression we've faced for over 40 years. If this backlog of injustice isn't cleared, we will intensify our agitation.' Protests were held in front of Deputy Commissioner offices in 26 districts across the state. 'This shows the political awakening of the Madigas,' Narayanaswamy declared. 'Many MLAs in this state would never have been elected without Madiga votes. Now that they're in power, they've forgotten us. If you don't speak for us, what moral right do you have to ask for our votes?' Angrily questioning the denial of fair representation, he said, 'Is there a rule in this country that Madigas must never get proper reservation? During elections to Zilla Panchayats and other local bodies, the government keeps pushing it to 'tomorrow'. The same Constitution that allowed for a national emergency to help a Prime Minister cling to power is now silent about the injustice to Madigas.' Highlighting the struggles faced by students in the community, he added, 'Many talented Madiga children cannot afford to pursue MBBS or higher education due to lack of support. Do you understand this pain? Does the government even care?' The protest ended with a collective resolve to continue the agitation until the internal reservation is implemented, with leaders vowing to bring the fight to the government's doorstep.
