JD(S) leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy demands white paper on Kalyana Karnataka funding, development

The Hindu4 days ago
Janata Dal(S) Youth Wing State president Nikhil Kumaraswamy has called upon the Congress government to release a white paper detailing the funds allocated for the development of Kalyana Karnataka and the actual progress made on the ground.
Speaking to media representatives after flagging off a membership drive in Sindhanur of Raichur district on June 26, he raised pointed questions about the effectiveness of the ₹5,000 crore said to be earmarked for the development of Kalyana Karnataka.
'Where exactly has the money gone? What roads have been built? What schools or bus stands have come up? Let the government make it clear through a white paper,' Nikhil demanded, accusing the government of making vague claims, such as disbursing ₹3,000 crore or ₹2,000 crore, without transparency or visible outcomes.
He criticised the administration for corruption and dysfunction, noting that even senior ruling party MLAs had voiced dissatisfaction in recent days. 'This government is being run through middlemen and commissions,' he alleged, citing growing internal dissent in the Congress.
Responding to Minister Rajanna's recent comments about a political 'revolution' in December, Nikhil said there was nothing surprising about the remark. 'Given the current political developments, something is certainly brewing,' he said, expressing confidence in significant political shifts in the coming months.
Nikhil targeted the Congress-led State Government for 'anti-farmer' policies highlighting the plight of farmers in Sindhanur where paddy and jowar are primary crops. 'The government has failed to ensure fair prices or market support, leaving farmers in distress,' he said.
He responded to the criticism by Congress leaders, who questioned the contributions of H.D. Kumaraswamy during his tenure as Union Minister, by stating that it was Mr. Kumaraswamy who wrote to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan regarding the crisis faced by mango farmers following which the Centre approved the procurement of 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes.
'The Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Union Cabinet all responded warmly to Mr. Kumaraswamy's efforts. Such leadership is a gift from the people, and I thank our party workers and the people of Karnataka for giving him that strength,' he added.
Nikhil called Karnataka's Agriculture Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy 'helpless and incompetent', and questioned whether such leadership could truly drive agricultural development in Karnataka.
'When a delegation led by former minister Nadagouda met the Agriculture Minister regarding the difficulties faced by farmers in Sindhanur, the Minister claimed that he had no knowledge of the issue. This shows the sorry state of our administration,' Nikhil said.
Tractor rally and temple visit
Before addressing the rally, Nikhil visited the Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka temple and sought the deity's blessings. He then led a tractor rally, through the streets, comprising hundreds of party workers who shouted slogans and lined the roads in support.
The meeting was attended by several prominent JD(S) leaders, including former ministers Venkatarao Nadagouda and Alokod Hanumanthappa, Sindhanur MLA Nemiraj Nayak, former MLA Raja Venkatappa Nayak, core committee member C.V. Chandrashekhar, State women's wing president Rashmi Ramegowda, leader Siddu Bandi, Raichur district president Virupaksha, and Sindhanur taluk president Basavaraj Nadagouda.

Officers, not Tom, Dick and Harry: Karnataka High Court to X on Railway's notice

The Karnataka High Court backed the Union government after it told the court that its officers are 'not Tom, Dick and Harry.' This came as X Corp India, the Indian arm of Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter), challenged a Ministry of Railways notice asking the platform to take down a video of a woman driving a car on railway tracks in Advocate KG Raghavan, appearing for X, questioned the legality of the notice. 'What if every Tom, Dick and Harry officer sends notice to me? See how this is being misused,' he argued. He also asked whether posting such videos amounts to unlawful content, adding, 'Dog biting man is not news, but man biting dog is,' as reported by Live General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Union of India, objected to the remarks. 'They are officers, not Tom, Dick and Harry. International bodies should not have this arrogance,' he said. He added that no social media company can expect unregulated functioning in India.'They are bound by regulations in all other countries but in India they want this luxury,' he M Nagaprasanna backed the objection and said, 'These are officers of the Union of India. I take objection to this.'advertisementX Corp has sought a declaration that Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act does not empower authorities to block content directly, and that such orders must follow the procedure under Section 69A and its Advocate Aditya Sondhi, appearing for a digital media association, said content creators are affected by takedown orders. But the bench questioned how the association is aggrieved when the dispute is between X and the government. Mehta objected to the intervention, saying, 'Twitter is competent. It does not require external support.'The court posted the matter for final hearing on July 8. It allowed X Corp to amend its petition and include various ministries as parties. The Union government was directed to file its objections.- EndsTune InTrending Reel IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

Toll rate hike a blow to daily commuters, says Cong

AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, on Tuesday, alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government had given yet another blow to daily commuters and working-class citizens by increasing toll rates on the Hosur Road corridor, connecting Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu. He said as per the new rates, the toll for cars at the Electronics City Flyover has increased from ₹60 to ₹65 (8.33% hike), while at the Attibele toll plaza, the rate has gone from ₹35 to ₹40 (14.29% increase). Additionally, the monthly pass for cars at Electronics City has been raised from ₹1,795 to ₹1,885, and at Attibele, from ₹1,080 to ₹1,130 — a steep hike of ₹90 and ₹50 respectively, the Congress leader said. He pointed out that BELT (Bangalore Elevated Tollway Limited), a private company operating under a concession agreement with NHAI, has once again hiked toll rates on Bengaluru's elevated expressway, proving that in Karnataka, even public roads are at the mercy of private profit. 'While the BJP-led Centre watches silently, the burden keeps falling on the backs of ordinary commuters. This is not infrastructure development, it's organised, authorised extortion,' he alleged. He accused the Modi-led Central government of favouring private toll operators at the cost of ordinary citizens and demanded an immediate rollback. He also urged immediate rollback of the ₹50 LPG cylinder hike and ₹2/litre fuel excise hike. 'If Karnataka's BJP-JD(S) MPs and MLAs can't raise their voice against Delhi's loot, they should raise their hands and resign,' Mr Surjewala said.

Congress govt. won't compromise on water rights of Telangana, asserts CM Revanth Reddy

HYDERABAD The Congress government would not compromise on the interests and rights of Telangana in the matter of river waters and they would wage a political, technical and legal battle towards that end, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said here on Tuesday. Speaking at a meeting of the party legislators, members of Parliament, Chairpersons of the Corporations and Commissions and Advisors as also the functionaries of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) organised to give a powerpoint presentation on the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project (PBLP) being taken up by Andhra Pradesh, he along with Minister for Irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy asked them to counter the misinformation campaign being run by the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The Chief Minister noted that it was former K. Chandrasekhar Rao and T. Harish Rao who were at the helm of the irrigation portfolio, but they had harmed the State's interests in the matter of Krishna waters first and later Godavari waters. At the first Apex Council meeting held in September 2016, the then Chief Minister (KCR) and Minister for Irrigation (Harish Rao) had agreed for only 299 tmc ft water share in Krishna against 512 tmc ft to A.P. and their decision had proved to be the death knell for Telangana. Despite having much higher catchment area, the previous government had agreed for only 32% water of 811 tmc ft assured water allocated to combined A.P. Besides, the BRS government had not completed any of the pending projects during its 10-year rule and as if it was not enough in a meeting with his A.P. counterpart then Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao had offered to give away Godavari water, stating that thousands of tmc ft was flowing waste into sea every year. However, the BRS leaders were shedding crocodile tears now after doing everything against the interests of Telangana and blaming the Congress government of inaction. The Chief Minister blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) too for not making even a small effort to protect the water rights of Telangana. On the PBLP, the Chief Minister said the A.P.'s proposal was not outrightly rejected but was told to get clearances first before seeking for its appraisal and added that there was a need to wage a relentless fight to protect the rights of Telangana in the matter of river waters. Meanwhile, Mr. Uttam Reddy said it was due to efforts of the Congress government that the expert appraisal committee of the MoEF had returned the A.P.'s proposal.
