Ohtani's big homer and smith's 2 blasts help dodgers end home woes with 5-2 win over twins

LOS ANGELES – Shohei Ohtani hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the first after giving up a leadoff homer to fellow All-Star Byron Buxton, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Monday night. The NL West leaders snapped a six-game skid at home, their longest such streak at Dodger Stadium since September 2017. They were swept in three games by the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend.
Buxton sent Ohtani's second pitch of the game halfway up the left field pavilion. After Mookie Betts walked, Ohtani answered with a 441-foot blast to center that put the Dodgers in front 2-1. The two-way Japanese superstar has homered in three straight games. Smith went deep twice off David Festa (3-4). Smith led off the fourth with a two-strike homer to center and followed with a 435-foot shot to left that made it 4-1. Andy Pages added a solo shot off reliever Cole Sands. Dustin May (6-6) took over from Ohtani, who allowed one run, four hits, and struck out three in three innings. May gave up five hits in 4 2/3 innings, struck out four, and walked three. Kirby Yates earned his third save. Freddie Freeman was in the lineup a day after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Milwaukee. He was 1 for 4 with a strikeout.
Key moment: Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa went 0 for 5, getting booed heavily in every at-bat by Dodgers fans still angry about the 2017 World Series when Correa played for Houston. He was robbed of a potential game-tying homer by James Outman at the center field wall in the ninth.
Key stat: Ohtani is the first pitcher to give up a homer and hit a homer in the first inning of the same game since Philadelphia's Randy Lerch in a 23-22 win over the Chicago Cubs on May 17, 1979.
Up next: Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (5-4, 3.95 ERA) starts Tuesday against Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-7, 2.59).

Dodgers beat red sox 5-2 as hernandez homers, ohtani's streak ends

Shohei Ohtani did not homer–for the first time in a week–but Teoscar Hernandez did on Friday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2. Ohtani, who had tied the franchise record by homering in five consecutive games, struck out twice, singled, walked, and popped up foul to the catcher. Hernandez had two hits for the Dodgers, including a two-run homer that made it 5-2 in the eighth. Emmet Sheehan (2-1) held Boston to three hits, striking out five in five innings. Ben Casparius pitched the ninth for his first career save. Brayan Bello (6-5) gave up three runs and six hits with two walks, striking out five in 5 1/3 innings for Boston. 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts did not play in the game as the Dodgers made their second trip to Fenway Park since he was traded to Los Angeles on the eve of the 2020 season. Key moment: With the Dodgers leading 3-2 in the fifth and runners on first and third, Bello struck out Freddie Freeman and Hernandez to end the inning. Key stat: Boston catcher Connor Wong lined a double off the Green Monster in the fifth inning. It was his first extra-base hit of the season after 13 singles in 90 at-bats in 36 games. His last extra-base hit was a double against Tampa Bay on the final day of the 2024 season. Up next: Red Sox LHP Garrett Crochet (11-4) will face Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (4-1) on Saturday.

Twins Beat Nationals 1-0 Behind 2-Hitter Over 6-Inning Start By Zebby Matthews

Zebby Matthews pitched a two-hitter over six scoreless innings in the best start of his career, and the Minnesota Twins started a pivotal homestand with a 1-0 victory over a wild MacKenzie Gore and the Washington Nationals on Friday night. All-Star Byron Buxton's sacrifice fly in the fifth was all Matthews (2-2) needed for his first win after a six-week stint on the injured list with a shoulder strain. The 25-year-old right-hander departed with a shutout for the first time in 15 major league starts while allowing the fewest hits of his career with six strikeouts and no walks. Matthews didn't let a ball out of the infield until a two-out double in the fourth inning by Luis García Jr. The Nationals have been held scoreless over 21 straight innings. Gore (4-10) matched his career high with six walks, allowing just one hit in five innings. He threw two wild pitches after walking Matt Wallner in the fifth, allowing him to move to third in position to score on Buxton's fly to left. The Twins, who entered the evening five games out of the last AL wild-card spot with five teams in front of them, won for the ninth time in their last 12 games at Target Field. They have five more games at home where they're 29-20 this season before the trade deadline. Key moment: Daylen Lile hit a one-out double in the eighth off Griffin Jax, but the right-hander responded by fanning Riley Adams on three pitches. Jax walked Jacob Young but got CJ Abrams to fly out to finish the inning. Key stat: The Nationals haven't scored since the sixth inning of a 6-1 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Shohei Ohtani's home run streak ends at 5 games in Dodgers' win over Red Sox at Fenway Park

Shohei Ohtani was held homerless for the first time in a week in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Ohtani struck out twice, singled, walked, and hit a foul popup. His five-game home run streak leaves him tied with six other players in Dodgers history. When Ohtani came up for the final time with one out and one on and the Dodgers leading 5-2 in the top of the ninth, Red Sox manager Alex Cora brought in left-hander Brennan Bernardino to replace righty Jorge Alcala. Ohtani popped up foul to the catcher. 'All good things must come to an end,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. Ohtani did not speak to reporters after the game. The three-time MVP homered on Wednesday night in the series finale against the Minnesota Twins, joining Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Shawn Green, and Roy Campanella as Dodgers with home runs in five games in a row. Ohtani is batting .273 with 70 RBIs and an NL-leading 37 homers. He's also pitched in six games and is scheduled to throw four innings on Monday in Cincinnati as he builds himself back up as a starter after his his second right UCL repair surgery. The record for consecutive games with a home run is eight, which has been held for a long time by Dale Long, Ken Griffey Jr., and Don Mattingly. Griffey in 1993 was the last player to do it.
