Astros minor pitcher Julio Rodriguez suspended 80 games for positive drug test
NEW YORK (AP) — Houston Astros pitcher Julio Rodriguez was suspended for 80 games Friday by Major League Baseball under the minor league drug program following a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Nandrolone.
A 25-year-old right-hander, Rodriguez was 2-0 with a 6.40 ERA in 21 relief appearances for High-A Asheville and Double-A Corpus Christi. After making 18 appearances for the Tourists, he was promoted on June 17.
Rodriguez was signed by San Francisco for a $300,000 bonus in March 2018 and reached Triple-A for a pair of games with Sacramento last July 1 and 3, then ended the season with Double-A Richmond. He was selected by Houston last December in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft.
Rodriguez is the eighth player suspended this year for a positive test, the sixth under minor league programs. Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games on March 31 and Philadelphia Phillies closer José Alvarado for 80 games on May 25 under the major league program.

BOSTON (AP) — The struggling Boston Red Sox could be getting some offensive help soon. Manager Alex Cora said Masataka Yoshida would start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. The 31-year-old DH/outfielder has been out the entire season following surgery on his right shoulder in October. 'He'll go on a rehab assignment. We'll see how many at-bats he needs,' Cora said Saturday before the Red Sox faced the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. 'He's moving well, the swing feels great, the throwing has been a lot better. He's been able to bounce back, so we just have to map it out and see how we're going to do it.' Cora said he'd also play some games in the outfield. Last season, he was primarily the DH, getting into left field only once in 108 games. In his first season in 2023 after signing a $90-million, five-year free agent deal with the team, he played 85 games in left. On Saturday, Yoshida was shagging fly balls during batting practice in right field, ran the bases while others were hitting and took BP. Also, third baseman Alex Bregman, who has been sidelined since late May with a strained right quad, ran lightly in the infield, and took grounders at third, throwing across the diamond before the Red Sox took BP. 'He's just finishing taking ground balls,' Cora said. 'It was a good day for him and Masa.' When he was injured, Bregman was one of the club's most productive hitters, batting .299 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs in 51 games. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Paulinho worked his way between a pair of defenders and rolled a shot into the back of the net in extra time Saturday to put Palmeiras into the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Brazilian league rival Botafogo. Paulinho, who has made one appearance for Brazil's national team, dribbled through the defense with an inside cut from the right wing in the 100th minute. He then sent a left-footed shot into the lower left corner of John's net. Botafogo created multiple chances for an equalizer in the final minutes but couldn't get a goal. The match at Lincoln Financial Field was full of attacking soccer with a combined 35 shot attempts. Palmeiras, however, ended the match with 10 men after defender Gustavo Gómez was given a red card. Gómez received a second yellow card in the 116th minute after tackling Igor Jesus in midfield to prevent Botafogo from starting a counterattack. LONDON (AP) — Novak Djokovic offered some lighthearted advice to top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon on Saturday after gatecrashing the Belarusian's news conference. Djokovic and Sabalenka spent some time practicing together at the All England Club this week ahead of the start of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, then playfully interrupted the end of Sabalenka's news conference on Saturday by telling her to hurry up so he could take over the podium. Sabalenka then took on the role of interviewer as reporters had been asking her about their session on court. 'What did you think about hitting with me?' the three-time major winner asked Djokovic. 'How do you see my level? Am I good?' Djokovic, who holds a total of 24 Grand Slams, was quick with a quip. 'I think you have the potential. You're like a really talented player,' he said, before offering a criticism of Sabalenka — who is known as one of the biggest hitters on the women's circuit. 'Can I be honest? You're lacking intensity on the court,' Djokovic said, drawing laughter. 'You don't have enough intensity. It's too flat. You've got to lighten up a little bit and put some power into it.'
