Astros minor pitcher Julio Rodriguez suspended 80 games for positive drug test

NEW YORK (AP) — Houston Astros pitcher Julio Rodriguez was suspended for 80 games Friday by Major League Baseball under the minor league drug program following a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Nandrolone. A 25-year-old right-hander, Rodriguez was 2-0 with a 6.40 ERA in 21 relief appearances for High-A Asheville and Double-A Corpus Christi. After making 18 appearances for the Tourists, he was promoted on June 17. Rodriguez was signed by San Francisco for a $300,000 bonus in March 2018 and reached Triple-A for a pair of games with Sacramento last July 1 and 3, then ended the season with Double-A Richmond. He was selected by Houston last December in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft. Rodriguez is the eighth player suspended this year for a positive test, the sixth under minor league programs. Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games on March 31 and Philadelphia Phillies closer José Alvarado for 80 games on May 25 under the major league program. ___ AP MLB: # #

Red Sox Bullpen Continues to Bleed; This Trade Could Solve Problem

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox have relied this season on 29-year-old Garrett Whitlock to get games to fireballing closer Aroldis Chapman. But Whitlock, acquired by the Red Sox from the New York Yankees in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft, has been badly overworked, as Red Sox starters have frequently made early exits. WIth 40 innings pitched already, Whitlock is tied for fifth-most by relievers in all of MLB. On Monday, Whitlock came into a 5-5 game against the Los Angeles Angels in the seventh inning, but after one scoreless frame, he melted down in the eighth, surrendering four runs and putting the game effectively out of reach, leading to Boston's third loss in a row. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 23: Manager Alex Cora #13 of Boston Red Sox looks on in the top of the fifth inning during the game against the at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on June 23, 2025 in Anaheim, California. MoreFor that matter, the Red Sox bullpen as a whole has thrown the eighth-most innings in the majors, with 296 1/3 heading into Tuesday's middle game of the three-game road set against the Angels. The Red Sox bullpen needs help, and a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays could bring some. According to an analysis by Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan published on Tuesday, Rays closer Pete Fairbanks is likely to be available at the trade deadline, if not before. The report assesses that Fairbanks has a 60 percent chance of being shipped out by the deadline. Why? It wouldn't be his performance. His 13 saves against just one blown opportunity have played a crucial role in getting the Rays to their 43-35 record, just two games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. The problem is that Fairbanks is playing the final season of his three-year, $12 million deal in Tampa Bay. The club has an option that will cost $7 million for next season, but with the third-lowest payroll in baseball at $55.76 million, Tampa Bay seems unlikely to pick that option up. Fairbanks would in effect be a rental. After the season, the Red Sox could choose whether to keep him around. That means his price would probably be lower than his value might otherwise command. More MLB: Could NL Contender Be Trade Partner For $120 Million Red Sox Infielder? The Red Sox could probably avoid dealing away any of their top 10 prospects, pulling from the next tier instead. Given Tampa Bay's history of developing young pitching, the Red Sox could look at sending their 2024 eighth-round draft pick, one of the youngest players in that draft class, 18-year-old Conrad Cason for Fairbanks. Ranked at No. 16 in the Red Sox system, Cason is a two-way player. A right-handed pitcher whose fastball reaches 98 mph, the Georgia native out of Greater Atlanta Christian high school is also an athletic, strong-armed shortstop. The Red Sox plan to develop him as a two-way player, which may also appeal to the cost-conscious Rays who would be getting both a pitcher and position player for the price of one, simply by giving up Fairbanks. Yankees place Ryan Yarbrough on IL, call up Allan Winans from Triple-A to start vs. Reds

The New York Yankees announced that pitcher Allan Winans has been called up from Triple-A to start Monday's game versus the Cincinnati Reds. Winans, 29, has been impressive in 11 appearances (nine starts) for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, compiling an 0.90 ERA and 7-0 record with 59 strikeouts in 50 innings. The Yankees invited him to spring training after two seasons with the Atlanta Braves and he nearly won a rotation spot before being assigned to Triple-A. Advertisement The Yankees are hoping Winans provides some stability to their starting rotation, at least in the short term, after the team placed Ryan Yarbrough on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain. Prior to the injury, Yarbrough made 16 appearances (eight starts) for the Yankees, posting a 3.90 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings. Home runs have been an issue for him this season with 10 allowed thus far. Soreness was a concern during his past two starts, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. 'After his last start, he was pretty sore the next day," Boone told reporters on Sunday, via the Associated Press. "Then before he was getting ready to throw his side the other day felt like couldn't quite do it.' Yarbrough became the latest Yankees starting pitcher to go on the IL, joining Gerrit Cole (out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery), Luis Gil (lat strain) and Marcus Stroman (left knee inflammation). Advertisement Stroman is expected to rejoin the Yankees' rotation next week, pending the results of his third minor-league rehab start on Tuesday. Winans will become the eighth starter to pitch for the Yankees this season, which is as many as the team used last year. "He's been tremendous. To be this deep in the season as a starting pitcher, have sub-1 (ERA), it's been really, really excellent,' Boone told reporters. 'So, hopefully, he brings some of that up here with us tomorrow.' Winans was a 17th-round draft pick by the New York Mets in 2018 out of Campbell University in North Carolina. After three seasons with the Mets, the Braves selected him in the Rule 5 Draft. He made eight starts for Atlanta during the past two seasons, collecting a 7.20 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 40 innings. Going into Monday's game, the Yankees are 45-32 with a 2.5-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
