Selangor MB orders Jais to probe into claims of indecency at Shah Alam convention programme
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the matter should be taken seriously and strict action should be taken if the allegations are found to be true after a thorough investigation.
'The report has just been received, I have asked JAIS to investigate and take strict action because it was organised privately in the hall, not related to the state government.
'... however, I am concerned with what was revealed, we need to conduct a thorough investigation and take strict action against anyone involved,' he said when met after officiating the Turath Islami 2025 Festival here today.
Asked if the convention centre management would be called to provide an explanation on the matter, Amirudin said it would first be submitted to the authorities for investigation.
Yesterday, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee was reported to have said his party would investigate the organisation of a marriage motivation programme at a convention centre here in September last year, which was linked to indecent acts and idolatry. — Bernama

Earlier, on June 27, Shamsul Azri announced that Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan had been appointed acting Minister of Economy, effective immediately, following the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli on June 17. A month after deadly crash, surviving UPSI students resume studies, but only three in campus
JELI, July 12 — All Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who survived last month's fatal bus crash in Gerik have since resumed classes, though the majority are doing so online. Only three students are attending classes at the main Tanjung Malim, Perak campus, Bernama reported Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir saying today. 'Several others are still undergoing treatment but are continuing their studies online. None of the injured students have deferred their studies,' he was quoted telling reporters after officiating the Jeli Umno division delegates meeting here. Zambry also confirmed that all the injured students have been discharged from hospital. 'The last injured student was discharged on July 8 from Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu. Three have since resumed their studies on campus, while the rest are attending classes online,' he was quoted as saying. The crash involved a chartered bus ferrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza along the Gerik-Jeli route in the early hours of the morning on June 9. The students were returning from Jertih in Terengganu to their Perak campus after the Aidiladha holidays. Fifteen students were killed while another 33 people sustained injuries, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the Perodua Alza's driver and three passengers.

Anwar defends Brazil visit, says Brics engagement key to global trade and clean energy push
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 12 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied claims that his recent visit to Brazil to attend the BRICS Summit was merely for 'leisure', stressing that it was an important effort to foster global economic cooperation. He said every official visit he undertook was aimed at generating economic returns for the country, and not for leisure as alleged by certain quarters. 'We do not travel just for sightseeing. During meetings and engagements, we use every opportunity to meet (with leaders and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and cooperation),' he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. The Finance Minister said Malaysia's strategic cooperation with Brazil had greatly benefited the country, including Petronas being granted access to the largest oil platform in Brazil. As for the frequency of his and several ministers' attendance at various Asean meetings and negotiations recently, Anwar said these were not merely symbolic but had led to concrete results, including Terengganu being selected as the hub for a new green hydrogen energy initiative. He said the project in Tasik Kenyir was highly significant as it aligned with the region's major agenda to implement the Asean Power Grid, which would connect cross-border electricity supply from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore through undersea cables. 'This energy production can only be realised through the cooperation of Asean, the Federal Government, and state governments. It will certainly position Malaysia as a major energy producer in the region,' he said. Anwar added that with the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology centres, which demand significantly higher energy and water capacities than typical industries, it was crucial for Malaysia to support and help realise the Asean Power Grid initiative. He also said Malaysia was increasingly respected on the global stage, as demonstrated by the extraordinary participation of major powers in recent Asean meetings, indicating confidence in the country's stability and economic potential. Anwar noted that while Asean meetings involved 10 member countries as well as Timor Leste, the attendance of major powers such as Japan, the United States, Russia, and Turkiye was a remarkable show of support for the platform.
