After Zepto, FDA shuts Blinkit Pune store for no licence, improper storage
According to the report, the facility — run by Energy Darkstore Services, a Blinkit partner — was inspected on 5 June. During the inspection, Maharashtra FDA officials also identified improper food storage conditions.
'We have asked for proper documents to be submitted in order to issue a licence. There are non-compliance issues, and without permission, they have been operating the store in the Baner-Balewadi area,' Suresh Annapure, joint commissioner, FDA, Pune, told The Indian Express.
Annapure said the facility has been asked to file a compliance report following which there will be a re-inspection.
Moreover, Food Safety Officer Laxmikant Sawale said that action was taken following violations of Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which outlines basic hygiene and sanitary practices food business operators are required to follow, the report added.
Blinkit is not the only quick commerce platform facing the heat from the FDA.
FDA crackdown on Zepto
Earlier this month, the Maharashtra FDA suspended the food business licence of quick commerce unicorn Zepto in Dharavi, Mumbai, citing non-compliance with food safety standards.
During the raid, authorities found several food safety violations at a Zepto facility, including included fungal growth on some food items, inadequate cold storage temperature control, improper segregation between expired and valid stock, food stored directly on the floor, wet and unclean flooring, and the presence of stagnant water near stored food products.
'The findings constitute a failure to comply with the conditions of the licence,' the FDA said.
In response to Business Standard's queries about the same, a Zepto spokesperson said, 'At Zepto, maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene is non-negotiable. We have already initiated an internal review and are working closely with the concerned authorities to ensure full and swift compliance. We are committed to rectifying the lapses identified and strengthening our processes to provide the best and safest quality of products to our consumers. We are taking all necessary corrective measures to resume operations in accordance with regulatory obligations and applicable laws at the earliest.'

Trump's 25% tariff to hit makhana export from Bihar
1 2 Patna: The US president Donald Trump's announcement of imposing 25% tariff on Indian products imported to his country is likely to hit makhana (fox nut) exports from Bihar. The state has a share of more than 25% of the makhana export from India. Till now, the import duty on Indian makhana in the US was 3.5%, which became 25% from Aug 1. Makhana exporter Satyajit Kumar Singh told this newspaper on Friday that Bihar is a major exporter of fox nuts. "India exports approximately 2,000 tonnes of fox nuts worth around $30 million (Rs 240 crore) per annum to the US and other countries. In 2024, Bihar alone contributed 600 tonnes to India's makhana export to the United States," said the managing director of a leading fox nut export firm in the state, adding the "superfood" was getting popular in the US and competing with their local walnut and almond due to its health benefits. Singh said Trump's July 30 decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective from early Aug, could significantly affect India's annual makhana exports to the US. "This policy may increase landed costs, squeezing competitiveness in a price-sensitive category. However, Indian makhana — clean-label, plant-based and sustainably sourced — could emerge attractive. Exporters must double down on FDA compliance, origin-based branding, traceability and value-added innovation," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo "However, if managed diligently, this external challenge may catalyse makhana's breakthrough as a premium superfood in the US market," Satyajit added. The 25% tariff is bound to drastically increase makhana prices in the US. At present, it is sold in the US market at a rate of Rs 8,000/kg. It is believed that the US importers will ask for a 25% reduction in prices of makhana imported from India. That will make things difficult for the Indian exporters, who are likely to look towards other countries for exporting their product, experts believed. After the US, Nepal and the UAE are the major importers of makhana from India. The experts said more than 85% of the country's makhana is produced in Bihar. However, Punjab and Assam are its biggest exporters due to lack of a good food processing industry and the necessary infrastructure like cargo facility for export in Bihar. According to industry experts, besides makhana, Bihar exports Basmati rice, mango and litchi to Europe and the Gulf countries.

India's export loss due to higher US tariffs limited to 0.3 to 0.4 pc of GDP: Report
New Delhi: The direct export loss from the higher US tariffs announced on Indian exports could be limited to around 0.3-0.4 per cent of its GDP as the country's largely domestic-driven economy and its relatively low share of goods exports to the US should provide some cushion, according to a CareEdge Ratings report released on Friday. "Not only is India's overall export dependence relatively low, but its merchandise export exposure to the US is also low at around 2 per cent of GDP, offering additional resilience," the report contends. Moreover, India's services exports remain outside the scope of these tariffs and should continue to support the external sector, the report states. The report also projects the current account deficit (CAD) to remain manageable at 0.9 per cent of GDP in FY26. Any diversification in India's oil imports away from Russia is expected to have a minimal impact on India's CAD, as the price differential between Russian Ural and the benchmark Brent Crude has significantly narrowed to around $3 per barrel from an average of $20 per barrel in 2023. India's merchandise exports to the US stood at $87 billion in FY25. Electronic goods accounted for the largest share of exports at 17.6 per cent. This was followed by pharma products (11.8 per cent) and gems & jewellery (11.5 per cent). The US accounts for 37 per cent of India's total electronic exports. Select items from this sector have been temporarily exempted from the 25 per cent US tariffs. Additionally, India's pharma exports to the US (accounting for 35 per cent of India's total pharma exports) have also been excluded from the tariffs, the report states. However, the overarching risk of sector-specific tariff action remains. India has one of the highest numbers of US FDA-approved manufacturing facilities catering to the generic medicine requirements of the US. While tariff uncertainties persist, the sector's fundamental competitive advantages offer some resilience, the report observes. India's relative tariff advantage for its exports to the US compared to several Asian peers, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and South Korea, has effectively reversed following the 25 per cent US tariff, along with the possibility of an additional penalty linked to India's trade ties with Russia, according to the report. However, India-US trade negotiations are expected to continue and could bring some relief. Still, India is likely to remain cautious about opening sensitive sectors such as agriculture and dairy, suggesting that the talks may take some time to conclude, the report said. Against this backdrop, it is too early to determine the clear winners and losers from the evolving tariff landscape. Volatility in global financial markets is likely to persist, and tariff-related developments will be critical to watch in the coming months, the report added.

Zepto, under watch for dark patterns, may tweak checkout experience
Bengaluru: Quick commerce firm Zepto is planning changes to its Super Saver feature as part of a broader overhaul to eliminate hidden charges and clean up dark patterns on its platform, according to two people familiar with the matter. The firm is looking to merge the Super Saver tab with the main Zepto tab in the coming weeks, as well as waive off some additional fees like fulfilment charges and handling fees, the two people said, requesting anonymity. It is not immediately clear if Zepto will do away with the same charges on the main tab as well. The move is expected to reduce clutter on the website as well as give better clarity to consumers on cart value and other charges, said one of the persons quoted above. However, the average order value on the platform may see some impact, this person said. Zepto declined to comment on the matter. This comes at a time when Zepto and several other online marketplaces have come under the government radar for dark patterns or sneaky online practices designed to mislead users into making unintended purchases or subscriptions. In June, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) directed several online commerce platforms—including Zepto, Amazon, Uber, and Rapido—to conduct self-audits within three months to identify and eliminate these dark patterns, Mint reported earlier. India is the first country to issue dedicated guidelines to regulate dark patterns. Government officials have said that the aim is not to hamper digital commerce but to ensure that its rapid growth is matched by ethical standards and consumer safeguards. Several consumer forums have called out quick commerce platforms for manipulating customers by inflating product prices on the basis of the smartphone they use, making free delivery option manual instead of automatically applying it to an eligible cart, introducing multiple additional fees like handling, packing and tips, and creating false urgency by stating low stock and flash sales. 'There's still a long way to go. Dark patterns are so deeply ingrained in the systems and simply fixing one feature won't have a significant impact on customer trust. Overall, the customer experience has been eroded," said Satish Meena, advisor at consulting firm Datum Intelligence. 'Platforms in their hypergrowth phase tend to ignore that their customers are capable of looking beyond convenience." Zepto—which has raised more than $1.95 billion till date and is valued over $5 billion—is also re-evaluating its growth strategy to curb losses ahead of a public-market listing. The firm posted a loss of ₹1,248 crore in the financial year ended March 2024, while its revenue surged two-fold to ₹4,454 crore year-on-year. The firm has reportedly postponed its initial public offering (IPO) plans to 2026 as it focuses on cutting losses and raising another round of private funding. Earlier this week, Mumbai-based NBFC Elcid Investments pumped in ₹ 7.5 crore in the firm as part of a larger funding round, acquiring a 0.039% stake. In May, Zepto also scaled down its 10-minute food delivery service Zepto Cafe in several cities in north India, following challenges surrounding sourcing of material and shortage of trained kitchen staff. The firm has also slowed down the expansion of dark stores. Super saver feature Swiggy Instamart and Zepto's basket-building feature was introduced to enlarge cart sizes and therefore reduce costs per order. Swiggy introduced 'Maxx Saver' in April, unlocking discounts on orders above ₹999. Zepto's Super Saver was rolled out in September 2024, offering discounted prices on orders crossing ₹399. Within three months of launch, Swiggy's move bore fruit. In the quarter ended June, the firm's average order value in quick commerce reached ₹612 from ₹527 in the previous quarter. According to the company, nearly 28% of its 11.1 million monthly transacting consumers now use the feature. Through the feature, Swiggy and Zepto aim to become the mainstay for planned purchases, mirroring the convenience and value of modern retail giants like D-Mart that drive monthly stock-up habits. Moreover, stiff competition from market leader Blinkit—whose average order value exceeds its rivals at ₹670—is pushing them to win more consumers fast. 'This confirms our belief that as quick-commerce becomes more well-entrenched and goes deeper into the pop [population] strata, providing cart-level value (without significant and perpetual subsidies) is a key lever for sustainably opening up the market further by building habits for stock-up purchases," Swiggy said in its letter to shareholders on Thursday. However, the moves can cause significant pressure as firms need to compromise margins to fuel discounts, ultimately denting profitability. An HSBC report from March said these value-oriented programmes can squeeze Ebitda margins from 6% to 3%. Moreover, Blinkit's positioning as a premium convenience-led app instead of a value-led app will help it maintain market leadership, the report added. 'We can expect Swiggy and Zepto to spend more money on this feature in the next 2-4 quarters to counter intensifying competition. They want to create a perception that the experience they provide is similar to a modern retailer. Blinkit, on the other hand, is maintaining consistent service and pricing across geographies even without a loyalty program," said Datum Intelligence's Meena.
