The assault on Babulal Khimaji Chaudhary, 48, owner of Jodhpur Sweet Mart, took place on June 29. Protesting traders on Thursday assembled in the Shanti Park area, fearing they would be targeted next as many of them are Gujaratis and Marwadis, and are not conversant in Marathi.
The traders said that even though their home state was not Maharashtra, they had been living in Mira-Bhayander for decades. 'It is not that we do not respect Maharashtra and Marathi,' said Karan Rajput, member of the local shopkeepers' association.
'We want justice for the victim and an assurance that we will be able to stay and continue our business without fear,' said Rajput.
The protest, which lasted two hours, ended when Prakash Gaikwad, deputy commissioner of police, assured the shop owners that action would be taken against the accused in the assault.
The Incident
At around 10:35 pm on June 29, seven men walked into Babulal Chaudhary's shop. Well-built, bearded and 20-30 years old, they were sporting a scarf bearing the MNS symbol and name.
The men asked the cashier for a bottle of water. When he couldn't converse in Marathi, the men verbally abused everyone in the shop. They said, 'If you don't know Marathi, don't live in Maharashtra. If you don't speak in Marathi, we will beat everyone and drive them away, and we will break and burn down your shop.'
Chaudhary demanded to know what government rule required people to speak in Marathi. In response, the men asked Chaudhary what language was spoken in Maharashtra. When he replied, 'All languages,' they grew very angry and slapped and punched Chaudhary in the face, head and neck. 'They threatened to wreck my shop, and burn me along with it,' he said.
'When a crowd began to assemble, seven or eight more people from the MNS party arrived and took away the men who had assaulted me,' said Chaudhary.
He said one of the goons recorded the incident on his mobile phone and that the video was widely circulated allegedly by MNS party workers.
The Law
Kashimira police have charged the accused with voluntarily causing harm and unlawful assembly under the BNS. Later, CCTV footage helped identify the goons. Notices have been to all the accused. Two of them have previous cases of assault pending, and their cases will be escalated to the DCP level, police said.

Shinde's ‘Jai Gujarat' slogan triggers ‘insult' outcry from Sena (UBT)

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde including 'Jai Gujarat' during his speech in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at an event in Pune sparked a war of words on Friday, with the Opposition alleging it is indicative of the Mahayuti government deferring to the Centre vis-a-vis Gujarat, the State both Mr. Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hail from. The Union Home Minister, during his visit to Maharashtra, attended several public programmes in Pune. At an event organised by the Gujarati community that was also attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the two Deputy CMs, Mr. Shinde praised Mr. Shah and ended his speech with 'Jai Hind! Jai Maharashtra! Jai Gujarat!' Clip vs clip The clip immediately went viral on social media. Leaders of the Shiv Sena (UBT) called Mr. Shinde the leader of 'Shah Sena'. 'Due to Amit Shah, he has forgotten that he is the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Don't get us wrong. Gujarat is an important part of India. If I go to Gujarat, I will say 'Jai Gujarat'. But in Maharashtra, we will say 'Jai Maharashtra'. The process of selling Maharashtra to Gujarat has begun. This is an insult to Maharashtra,' Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut reacted. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena in turn circulated video clips showing Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray saying 'Jai Gujarat!' The Opposition party, however, pointed out that the clip was from an election rally in Gujarat. Mr. Shinde proceeded to hold a press conference on the issue. 'We are Marathi-lovers. Is Gujarat a part of Pakistan? We are linked to the soil of Marathi and Maharashtra. There is no need to teach us... I said what I said in Pune so that the community should feel appreciated. Marathi is our breath, Hindutva our soul. This politics is due to the impending [Mumbai civic] elections,' he said. Peshwa statue unveiled Earlier in the day, Mr. Shah unveiled an equestrian statue of Peshwa Bajirao I at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune district. Stating that no military commander in the world can match the record of the 18th century Maratha general, the Union Home Minister credited Maratha king Shivaji for the establishment of swaraj (sovereignty) and Peshwas for carrying forward his legacy. 'India's armed forces and leadership will continue to sustain swaraj; Operation Sindoor is an example of it,' he said. 'In 2047, India should dominate in all the fields in the world. That should be the goal of our lives,' he said after unveiling the 13.5-foot-tall, 4,000-kg bronze statue of Bajirao I on the NDA campus at Khadakwasla.

Congress Not To Join Uddhav-Raj Thackeray Rally Against Hindi Imposition

Mumbai: The Congress has distanced itself from the joint 'victory rally' by estranged brothers Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray on Saturday to celebrate the state government's move to withdraw its two government resolution on the introduction of Hindi along with Marathi and English for Classes 1 to 5. A large section of the Maharashtra Congress strongly opposed the party's participation in tomorrow's rally saying that although party is opposed to the imposition of Hindi it does not want to disturb the non-Marathi vote bank especially ahead of the upcoming BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation elections. The party has decided a conscious decision not to attend the Uddhav-Raj Thackeray show tomorrow. "We have always maintained that we do not support the BJP government on its mission to impose Hindi. We had made our stand clear much before any other party. We stand with Marathi but respect every other language. I received the invitation for the Saturday program on Friday. I had my travel plans fixed which I cannot change," said Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal. Sapkal has outrightly rejected the Narendra Jadhav committee formed by Maharashtra government to give its report on the three-language formula in primary education. "We oppose the policy itself. There is no question of supporting this committee. It should be scrapped right away," he said. The Congress insiders said that the party does not want to get dragged behind Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on the issue of dispute between Marathi and non Marathi speakers. "A large chunk of Congress leadership and workers in Mumbai come from north Indian as well as non-Marathi speaking population. Why should we disturb our voters?" questioned a Congress leader from Mumbai. The other state Congress leaders too are wary about going with Thackerays at present. "At present, it seems that the local body elections are going to be a solo show for all. We should focus on strengthening our organisation instead of following others," said a senior party MLA and leader from Vidarbha.
