
Scientists Will Melt Some of Earth's Oldest Ice to Solve Climate Mystery
Over the course of seven weeks, scientists at the British Antarctic Survey plan to gradually melt 1.5-million-year-old Antarctic ice cores at their lab in Cambridge, England, unlocking whatever dust, volcanic ash, and even single-celled algae that might be preserved inside. These materials hold clues about Earth's ancient climate and atmospheric composition, and could provide new insights into how greenhouse gases influenced global temperatures more than a million years ago. They could also help scientists understand how human-generated emissions will shape Earth's future.
'Our climate system has been through so many different changes that we really need to be able to go back in time to understand these different processes and different tipping points,' Liz Thomas, head of ice core research at the BAS, told the BBC.
One crucial mystery the scientists hope to solve is why Earth's glacial cycles appeared to suddenly switch at a point between 800,000 and 1.2 million years ago, a shift known as the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. Antarctic ice core analysis done in 2004 found a close link between Earth's climate and atmospheric gases over the past 800,000 years, suggesting that the planet experienced ice ages interspersed with warmer periods on a 100,000-year cycle. But marine sediment records dating back at least 1 million years have indicated that, before then, glacial periods occurred more frequently, about once every 41,000 years.
Thomas and her colleagues hope the new cores will reveal the composition of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere during this mysterious transition, and that could explain why it happened at all.
'The project is driven by a central scientific question: why did the planet's climate cycle shift roughly one million years ago from a 41,000-year to a 100,000-year phasing of glacial-interglacial cycles?' Thomas said in a statement.
'By extending the ice core record beyond this turning point, researchers hope to improve predictions of how Earth's climate may respond to future greenhouse gas increases.'
Her team will use a technique called continuous flow analysis, which involves slowly melting ice core sections and simultaneously measuring any chemical elements, particles, and isotopic data to extrapolate Earth's past climate conditions. Air bubbles trapped inside the cores can reveal our planet's ancient atmospheric conditions, changes in greenhouse gas concentrations, and Earth's temperature at the time.
'This unprecedented ice core dataset will provide vital insights into the link between atmospheric [carbon dioxide] levels and climate during a previously uncharted period in Earth's history, offering valuable context for predicting future climate change,' Thomas said.

Here's something that will make you lose just a bit more faith in humanity—or at least reach for some hand wipes. New research shows that even in hospitals, a substantial number of people aren't bothering to wash their hands. Scientists from the University of Surrey in England led the study, installing sensors near hospital toilet and sink pipes to keep track of people's handwashing. Nearly half of toilet users skipped the sink after flushing, they found. The researchers say more effective strategies are needed to remind and convince people of the importance of handwashing, particularly in high-risk environments like hospitals. Scientists Capture the Spray From a Flushing Toilet in All Its Disgusting Glory Previous studies have tried to analyze how rigorous people are about handwashing in hospitals and other settings, but they've been limited. Some have relied on asking people to self-report their hygiene habits, for instance, which might incentivize more than a few to fudge the truth. The researchers decided to take a different approach. They connected sensors to toilet and sink pipes that could objectively and non-intrusively detect if and when they were being used. The sensors work by measuring the temperature in the pipes and nearby air; when either cold or hot water passes through the pipes, the temperature sharply changes relative to its surroundings, indicating use. The researchers teamed up with the Bispebjerg Hospital in Denmark to conduct their study (aptly named the 'FLUSH. WASH. PROTECT.' study). For 19 weeks, they tracked people's handwashing behaviors at two public restrooms in the hospital, ultimately recording more than 2,600 flushes. Nearly 44% of the time after flushing, people steered clear of handwashing. At times, non-adherence was even worse, with over 60% of people not handwashing during certain weeks. Non-handwashing was also more common at the start and end of the day and during typical meal times. The team released its findings last week on the Open Source Framework. 'People may assume handwashing is second nature by now—especially in hospitals and post-covid-19—but our data paints a different picture,' said lead author Pablo Pereira-Doel, co-leader of the Human Insight Lab at the University of Surrey's Business School, in a statement from the university. Mosquitoes Have Mixed Feelings About Soap, Study Finds Low rates of handwashing can, of course, make it easier for doctors, patients, and visitors to inadvertently spread dangerous infections to already vulnerable people, including drug-resistant superbugs. Some studies have suggested that certain interventions, like clear signs, can modestly boost handwashing at hospitals, at least temporarily. But given the results here, it's likely we'll need to do a lot more to consistently improve people's hand hygiene. 'These findings are worrying but not surprising. Even simple behaviors like handwashing can lapse without reinforcement. In hospitals, lapses like these can have serious consequences—for patients and for the wider healthcare system. It's time we moved beyond posters and hand gel stations to more effective behavioral strategies,' said study author Carrie Newlands, Lead for Clinical Skills at the University of Surrey's School of Medicine, in a statement. New tool can identify children likely to become obese as adults
A tool which can measure a child's risk of becoming obese in later life has been created by scientists. It is hoped that the new resource will one day mean that those at highest risk will get targeted support to prevent them from becoming obese in the first place. The tool, which assesses a person's genetic risk of obesity, works twice as well as any other obesity risk predictor, academics said. As well as identifying children at risk of obesity, it can also predict how well obese adults will respond to targeted weight loss programmes. Academics used detail on genetic variations from more than five million people to create a tool called a polygenic risk score, which analyses people's genetics to work out their risk of developing obesity. The tool could explain 17.6% of variation in body mass index score (BMI) from people in the UK, they found. Researchers, led by academics at the universities of Copenhagen and Bristol, tested whether the risk score was associated with obesity using datasets of the physical and genetic characteristics of more than 500,000 people. This included checking the tool on people taking part in the 'Children of the 90s' study – a long-term study in Bristol tracking families as children age. They found that it could successfully predict weight gain during childhood – from the age of just two and a half – through to adolescence. 'Overall, these data show that polygenic scores have the potential to improve obesity prediction, particularly when implemented early in life,' the authors wrote in the journal, Nature Medicine. Lead author of the research, assistant professor Roelof Smit from the University of Copenhagen, said: 'What makes the score so powerful is the consistency of associations between the genetic score and body mass index before the age of five and through to adulthood – timing that starts well before other risk factors start to shape their weight later in childhood. 'Intervening at this point could theoretically make a huge impact.' He told the PA news agency that BMI is not a good predictor for a child's obesity risk in later life but the genetic predictor can offer insight into the risk from early years. 'Essentially it's fixed at conception already very early in life, you're able to essentially quantify what someone's innate predisposition is for BMI,' he said. 'So, being able to say something about someone's innate biology for obesity risk.' Meanwhile, the research team also looked at people taking part in 'intensive lifestyle intervention' programmes. People with a higher risk score lost more weight, but were also more likely to regain it. Prof Smit added: 'There is a huge amount of variation in how people respond to these interventions. 'What we observed was the higher someone's score was, the more they tended to respond to the intervention – people who had a higher score tended to lose more weight in the first year. 'And we also saw that people who had the higher scores tended to gain more weight.' Dr Kaitlin Wade, associate professor in epidemiology at the University of Bristol and second author on the paper, said: 'Obesity is a major public health issue, with many factors contributing to its development, including genetics, environment, lifestyle and behaviour. 'These factors likely vary across a person's life, and we believe that some of these originate in childhood. 'We were delighted to contribute data from the Children of the 90s study to this exceptional and insightful research into the genetic architecture of obesity. 'We hope this work will contribute to detecting individuals at high risk of developing obesity at an earlier age, which could have a vast clinical and public health impact in the future.'
