African Space Agency celebrates official inauguration, joining global push for space innovation

Africa has taken a giant leap into the global space arena with the official inauguration of the African Space Agency (AfSA), signaling the continent's commitment to space exploration and technological advancement.
The inauguration ceremony was held on April 20 at the agency's permanent headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. Dignitaries from across Africa and the global space community, including representatives from the African Union Commission, national governments, and international space agencies such as the European Space Agency (ESA), NASA, and the Italian Space Agency were in attendance, Egypt Today reported.
Government officials say the inauguration will help bring vital space-based services to the African continent. "We aspire for internet services to extend to cover all parts of the African continent, and for the agency to contribute to digitizing governmental and service institutions, enhancing performance efficiency and bringing services closer to the citizen," said Egypt's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ayman Ashour, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Established under the African Union's Agenda 2063, AfSA aims to coordinate and implement Africa's space ambitions, focusing on areas such as Earth observation, satellite development, and space science to support socio-economic development across the continent.
Other space agency leaders hailed the inauguration and what it means for the continent. "The establishment of the African Space Agency is a real milestone for the continent and signals an important advance for Africa's space strategy," Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the ESA said in a statement commemorating the inauguration. "Space has the power to spur innovation and inspiration, and I look forward to working together for the benefit of citizens on both continents."
The AfSA has been in development since 2015, with the African Union Commission adopting an African space policy and strategy in 2016.
"ESA is proud to [be] partnering with this new regional space agency," Marco Ferrazzani, ESA Director of Internal Services, said in the statement. "Collaboration with Africa dates back three decades and today ESA even runs a dedicated EOAFRICA Initiative. With AfSA, this cooperation will be brought up to the next level."
The inauguration coincided with the commencement of the 2025 NewSpace Africa Conference, bringing together over 500 delegates from more than 64 countries to discuss the future of space innovation and collaboration in Africa.

Starlink users in cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Nairobi were particularly affected, emphasizing the need for reliable digital services in the region. Following upgrades to its satellite network, Starlink has recommenced services in key urban and rural areas across Africa. After several months suspension, Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, has resumed activating new subscribers in Nigeria and several other African countries, providing a much-needed boost in addressing the continent's digital shortcomings.. Recall that in November 2024, Starlink temporarily halted new orders in Nigeria due to capacity constraints and pending regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The suspension, according to reports, affected over 60,000 existing subscribers, who received notifications of pending approval for their activations. Over 100,000 Africans Affected In total, the temporary halt affected over 100,000 users across Africa, particularly major urban areas like Warri, Kiambu, Lagos, Abuja, Lusaka, Kano, Port Harcourt, Nairobi, and Accra, with "sold-out" notifications appearing in these cities as existing service infrastructure struggled to meet surging demand. The pause came at a time when African users, particularly in underserved rural and urban-fringe areas, had turned to Starlink as a reliable internet alternative due to the unreliability of terrestrial broadband. Starlink acknowledged the issue, stating, 'Too many users are trying to access the Starlink service, and there isn't enough bandwidth to support additional customers. ' However, following recent upgrades to its network infrastructure, the satellite network provider has resumed services in major Nigerian cities. ' This marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide and transforming connectivity across the country, ' the internet service provider told The Punch. ' We have officially resumed activations for customers nationwide, with Lagos, Abuja, and other high-demand regions leading this exciting revival.' Beyond Nigeria, reports confirm Starlink has lifted residential subscription restrictions in major cities across Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Reacting to the new development, Konga, Starlink's largest retail partner in Nigeria, welcomed the move and announced free nationwide delivery for all Nigerian customers. ' Whether customers order online or walk into any of our retail outlets in cities like Asaba, Port Harcourt, Ikeja, Uyo, Owerri, Ibadan, FCT, Warri, Kano, Enugu, or Onitsha, their Starlink kits will be delivered at no extra cost, ' the company said. The galaxy next door to the Milky Way, Andromeda, has never looked as stunning as it does in a new image from NASA's Chandra X-ray space telescope. The image of the galaxy, also known as Messier 31 (M31), was created with assistance from a range of other space telescopes and ground-based instruments including the European Space Agency (ESA) XMM-Newton mission, NASA's retired space telescopes GALEX and the Spitzer Space Telescope as well as the Infrared Astronomy Satellite, COBE, Planck, and Herschel, in addition to radio data from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. All these instruments observed Andromeda in different wavelengths of light across the electromagnetic spectrum, with astronomers bringing this data together to create a stunning and intricate image. The image is a fitting tribute to astronomer Vera C. Rubin, who was responsible for the discovery of dark matter thanks to her observations of Andromeda. As the closest large galaxy to the Milky Way, at just around 2.5 million light-years away, Andromeda has been vital in allowing astronomers to study aspects of galaxies that aren't accessible from our own galaxy. For example, from inside the Milky Way, we can't see our galaxy's spiral arms, but we can see the spiral arms of Andromeda. Every wavelength of light that was brought together to create this incredible new image of Andromeda tells astronomers something different and unique about the galaxy next door. For example, the X-ray data provided by Chandra has revealed the high-energy radiation released from around Andromeda's central supermassive black hole, known as M31*. M31* is considerably larger than the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). While our home supermassive black hole has a mass 4.3 million times that of the sun, M31* dwarfs it with a mass 100 million times that of the sun. M31* is also notable for its occasional flares, one of which was observed in X-rays back in 2013, while Sgr A* is a much "quieter" black hole. Andromeda was chosen as a tribute to Rubin because this neighboring galaxy played a crucial role in the astronomer's discovery of a missing element of the universe. An element that we now call dark matter. In the 1960s, Rubin and collaborators precisely measured the rotation of Andromeda. They found that the speed at which this galaxy's spiral arms spun indicated that the galaxy was surrounded by a vast halo of an unknown and invisible form of matter. The mass of this matter provided the gravitational influence that was preventing Andromeda from flying apart due to its rotational speed. The gravity of its visible matter wouldn't have been sufficient to hold this galaxy then, astronomers have discovered that all large galaxies seem to be surrounded by similar haloes of what is now known as dark matter. This has led to the discovery that the matter which comprises all the things we see around us — stars, planets, moons, our bodies, next door's cat — accounts for just 15% of the "stuff" in the cosmos, with dark matter accounting for the other 85%. The finding has also prompted the search for particles beyond the standard model of particle physics that could compose dark matter. Thus, there's no doubt that Rubin's work delivered a watershed moment in astronomy, and one of the most important breakthroughs in modern science, fundamentally changing our concept of the universe. Additionally, in recognition of Rubin's monumental contributions to our understanding of the universe, the United States Mint recently released a quarter featuring Rubin as part of its American Women Quarters Program.
