Prayagraj: The water levels of Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj rose sharply on Sunday, flooding both rural and urban areas and affecting over 1.5 lakh families. By Sunday morning, floodwaters reached 16 villages and seven city neighbourhoods.
However, a marginal decline was recorded in water levels by Sunday afternoon, offering slight but crucial relief to local authorities who continue their flood management efforts under high alert.
As per official data, on Sunday morning at 8:00am, the Yamuna at Naini surged by 56 cm to 83.19 meters—just 1.5 meters below the danger mark of 84.734 meters. The Ganga at Phaphamau stood at 83.06 meters, having risen by 45 cm, while at Chhatnag and Buxi STP, it reached 82.41 and 82.90 meters, respectively.
However, by 4:00pm on Sunday, there was a notable decline: Yamuna at Naini dipped to 82.86 meters, and Ganga levels showed mixed readings—Phaphamau increased slightly to 83.09 meters (+1 cm), while Chhatnag and Buxi STP saw minor decline of 4 cm and 9 cm, respectively.
By Saturday evening, two relief camps in Sadar Tehsil—Annie Besant Relief Camp and Cantt Marriage Hall—provided shelter to 50 people (36 and 14 respectively).

With more areas submerged, these numbers are expected to rise significantly. The looming threat of water breaching homes remains especially high in low-lying areas like Baghdara, Salori, Beli, Rajapur, and Ashok Nagar. Abhishek Yadav, a resident of Baghdara, shared that he packed his essentials, fearing his house would soon be submerged.
Local officials are conducting inspections in the worst-hit areas. SDM Abhishek Kumar Singh visited Daraganj, Salori, and Rajapur on Saturday, urging early evacuation.
ADM (Finance and Revenue) Vinita Singh also visited flood-prone areas during Jan Sunwai and encouraged locals to stay prepared.
Among the worst-affected neighbourhoods are Baghdara, Ganganagar, Nevadha, Dhrariya, and Beli Kachar. Rural areas such as Meja (Jharihari, Isota, Nawai, Chilbila, Bakasandi), Karachna (Bhagesar). Several locations in Sadar Tehsil (Kachamau, Tareiya, Rajapur, Abdullapur, Beli Kachar, and Uparhar) are also flooded.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar assured that relief efforts are in full swing.
NDRF, SDRF, and civil defence teams are on the ground rescuing people via boats. In the Badra Sonoti region, 11 boats are ferrying residents after road connections were submerged.
Although water rise slowed down—particularly the Yamuna which declined 8 cm between 8:00am and 4:00pm on Sunday—experts warn the danger isn't over.
Further rainfall upstream may trigger a new wave of flooding.
The irrigation department reported controlled releases of 46,000 cusecs from Bhuraghat Barrage and 80,000 cusecs from Ken Barrage, expected to reach Prayagraj by Sunday night. Executive Engineer Digvijay Narayan Shukla said that while release rates decreased, significant pressure remains on both rivers. However, receding water in the Tons River may help alleviate the situation slightly.
In light of these developments, officials remain on high alert, closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to prepare for possible evacuations if condition worsen.

Wildfires threaten Turkey's fourth-largest city as locals evacuate

Wildfires that have engulfed Turkey for weeks threatened the country's fourth-largest city early Sunday, causing more than 1,700 people to flee their homes and leaving a firefighter dead. Overnight fires in the forested mountains surrounding Bursa in northwest Turkey spread rapidly, tinting the night sky over the city's eastern suburbs with a red glow. Dozens of severe wildfires have hit the country daily since late June, with the government declaring two western provinces, Izmir and Bilecik, disaster areas on Friday. Orhan Saribal, an opposition parliamentarian for the province, described the scene as "an apocalypse." Live Events By morning, lessening winds brought some respite to firefighters, who continued efforts to battle the flames. However, TV footage revealed an ashen landscape where farms and pine forests had earlier stood. Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said fire crews across the country confronted 84 separate blazes Saturday. The country's northwest was under the greatest threat, including Karabuk, where wildfires have burned since Tuesday, he said. Unseasonally high temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds have been fueling the wildfires. The General Directorate of Meteorology said Turkey recorded its highest ever temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius (122.9 degrees Fahrenheit) in the southeastern Sirnak province on Friday. The highest temperatures for July were seen in 132 other locations, it said. Fourteen people have died in recent weeks, including 10 rescue volunteers and forestry workers killed Wednesday in a fire in Eskisehir in western Turkey. Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said late Saturday that prosecutors had investigated fires in 33 provinces since June 26, and that legal action had been taken against 97 suspects. On Bulgaria's southern borders with Greece and Turkey, as well as the western Serbian frontier, firefighters battled wildfires as the government declared the worst-hit provinces disaster zones. Residents across nearly half the country were issued with a code red warning, the highest level. National Fire Service chief Alexander Djartov told reporters that 236 wildfires were burning, many fanned by strong winds. The government had asked EU partners for help, he added, and aircraft were expected from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Hungary and Sweden later Sunday. In the southwestern Strumyani region, overnight blazes forced firefighters to retreat. They were reinforced Sunday by soldiers. Dozens of people fled their homes in the western Tran region as flames threatened villages near the Serbian border.

What do rain forecasts say ahead of final day of 4th India-England Manchester Test?

With a defiant skipper Shubman Gill and 'Mr Dependable' KL Rahul standing tall at the crease, a great finish awaits cricket fans during the final day of the fourth Manchester Test against England. With Joe Root and Ben Stokes ' massive centuries giving the Three Lions a gigantic 311-run lead over India, which scored 358 in their first innings, the task of achieving a win looks near impossible, with India having scored 174/2, with Gill (78*) and KL (87*) standing strong after the visitors lost two quick wickets for no run. Perhaps a miracle could occur if India bats aggressively for the first two sessions, secures a lead and gives England something to chase during the final session. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Test is a format filled with uncertainties, thrills, ebbs and flows like no other form of cricket. However, rain could play a spoilsport. However, there are different forecasts, and it is only right to have a look at them. As per Accuweather, quoted by Wisden, the chances of rain remain low throughout the day, as low as 7% Live Events As per quoted by Wisden, rain is predicted for early hours in the day, during 7 to 8 AM, but the chances go below 5 per cent after that. Finally, as per BBC Weather, the probability of rain stays the highest around noon with 32 per cent. It will remain at 25 per cent throughout the morning. Minimal rainfall is expected in the afternoon hours. While the weather forecast looks extremely promising for the most part, cricket fans would have their fingers crossed that not even a single drop of rain takes place, which could shave off some overs from the match and steal a good finish. Moreover, a considerable amount of rain could make the surface wet and slippery enough to pose a challenge for Indian batters, as the ball could play its trick through a varied bounce and movement. Out of both teams, it would be the Indian fans who would be hoping for no rain. With the remainder of the batting line-up consisting of an injured Rishabh Pant , all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar , the road towards overcoming a 311-run lead and taking a big lead later looks extremely difficult for India, which has witnessed its share of batting collapses this series. Fans would be hoping that the sun is out, keeps the pitch decently dry, and makes the ball come nicely on the bat. Earlier in the fourth Day of the Test match, India recovered after initial shocks in their second innings of the fourth Test, but the team is still in deep waters with England scoring a massive 669 in their first innings and getting an overall lead of 311 runs over the visitors, who had made 358 runs in the second innings. Big centuries from Joe Root and skipper Stokes and some extra runs from tailenders proved to be a serious headache for India. The Indian second innings began on a shocking note with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan going back to the pavilion on a duck. KL Rahul and Captain Shubman Gill steadied India's innings with a patient and stellar stand of 174 runs. India finished Day 4 on 174/2 and are now 137 runs behind England. If the Indian team can salvage the match on the fifth and final day on Sunday, it will be an achievement in itself. England went wicketless in the final session as Indian batters added 126 runs to their tally, with KL Rahul 87* and Shubman Gill 78* unbeaten on the crease. India started the third session at 86/2 with Gill, who looked in fine touch, notched up his eighth Test fifty and fourth against England off 77 deliveries.
