Recently, in Ipoh, over 200 Malaysians gathered at night not in anger, but in solemn remembrance. Candlelight flickered in the hands of mothers, students, retirees – people from all walks of life – honouring the lives of thirty dogs recently euthanised at the Lahat Animal Detention Centre in Ipoh.
What brought them there was grief. But what they lit wasn't just wax and flame – it was the beginning of a brighter, more humane conversation.

IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge goes sustainable in hosting 13,000 runners
KUALA LUMPUR: More than 13,000 runners took over the closed highways of New Pantai Expressway (NPE) and Lebuhraya Sungai Besi (Besraya) earlier today for the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2025. Malaysians made up 80 per cent of the participants, with the remaining 20 per cent hailing from about 30 countries. The seventh edition of the running event featured multiple a 42.195km full marathon, 21km half marathon, and 10km and 5km runs. Organised in collaboration with IJM Corporation Bhd and Allianz Malaysia Bhd, this year's edition also introduced several sustainability initiatives, namely a bottle collection and recycling effort; sustainable race apparel and paperless race experience. Over 16,000 plastic bottles used during the race were collected and sent to an authorised recycling facility, ensuring zero plastic waste. Paper cups were also separated and collected for recycling. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with Trash4Cash and with the support of 286 volunteers at the water stations. This year's race apparel was made from biodegradable, high-performance recycled fabrics, a first for the event, combining eco-consciousness with athletic function. The event also adopted digital registration, race packs details and e-certificates to reduce paper consumption while improving convenience for participants IJM Corporation Bhd group chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Lee Chun Fai said the event challenged them each year to raise the bar, not just in terms of race distance, but also in how they activate their highways for the community. "Now, World Athletics-certified and with strong support from our partners, the event delivers a race that meets international standards while staying rooted in the local spirit. "From recycled race apparel to paperless race experiences, we are proud to see how the event has become a platform for healthier living, environmental responsibility and shared momentum year after year," he said. Allianz Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Sean Wang said" "We are proud to continue our support for the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge, an event that epitomises the essence of healthy living and sustainable lifestyles. "This year's edition has not only clearly reflected those values but also fostered positive change within the community as well as on the environment." The handover ceremony was officiated by Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who said the project reflects the federal government's ongoing commitment to narrowing the development gap between urban and rural schools. 'Yesterday, the Ministry of Works (KKR), through the Public Works Department (JKR), handed over two completed rural education infrastructure projects—one in Padawan and the other here in Simunjan. 'Today, we are once again gathered for the official handover of the Replacement Construction Project involving 12 classrooms, five teachers' quarters, and other supporting facilities at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Sadong, Simunjan, Sarawak,' he said in his speech during the 'Majlis Penyerahan Projek Siap Projek Pembinaan Gantian 12 Bilik Darjah, Lima Unit Rumah Guru dan Lain Lain Kemudahan' at the school grounds. According to Nanta, the initiative is among the key education-related infrastructure projects under the Malaysia Madani government, implemented by the Ministry of Works and executed by JKR. 'This project is not just about building structures—we are building hope and shaping the future. Schools must be safe, modern and inclusive spaces that support quality teaching and learning while nurturing competitive, ethical and tech-savvy young Malaysians,' he said. The RM28.73 million project was awarded to the JKR Special Project Team 2 (Pasukan Projek Khas 2 or PPK2) on March 17, 2022, and was carried out through conventional method by the appointed main contractor, Welfield Services Sdn Bhd. 'I hope that the completion of this project not only meets the physical infrastructure needs of the school but also injects new spirit into the teachers and students to further elevate academic excellence and holistic development,' Nanta said. He also congratulated the project team, highlighting that the project was completed ahead of schedule. 'I understand this project was completed ahead of time (AOT), and I want to commend all involved for their teamwork, professionalism and strong commitment. This is the spirit we want to instil as a culture of excellence in all KKR projects,' he said. Nanta reminded the contractor to uphold their responsibility and integrity throughout the Defect Liability Period (DLP) by promptly addressing any reported defects from the school. 'JKR will continue to monitor all aspects of post-handover maintenance to ensure the entire project remains functional and complies with the required specifications,' he said. Nanta stressed that the Ministry of Works and JKR remain committed to delivering high-impact, high-quality public infrastructure projects that truly benefit the rakyat. 'The successful completion and handover of yet another project on schedule today proves that the aspirations of the Madani Government are not mere rhetoric but are being translated into reality—through quality projects delivered on time and with added value for the community. 'I hope and pray that these educational facilities will be fully utilised and well-maintained by the entire school community so they remain sustainable and functional for generations to come as a centre for nurturing outstanding Sarawakian youth,' he added. Sixth Arab-Hadrami gathering strengthens community ties in Melaka
MELAKA: The sixth Himpunan 1,000 Jamaah, jointly organised by Al Jamiatul Khairiah and Al-Wafaa Melaka, successfully brought together over 500 members of Malaysia's Arab-Hadrami community in Ayer Keroh. The event, attended by Yemen's Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Adil Bahamid, highlighted the community's historical contributions to Islam, trade, and social development in the country. Al Jamiatul Khairiah president Datuk Seri Syed Hussein Al-Habshee emphasised the importance of preserving heritage for younger generations.
