Real Madrid hopeful over new major triple injury boost for Arsenal showdown

Yahoo29-03-2025
Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to have three players back for the huge Champions League showdown with Arsenal as Real Madrid face important selection decisions amid a packed fixture list.
The current holders and record 15-time winners take on Mikel Arteta's side in a heavyweight two-legged quarter-final tie next month, with the opening fixture at the Emirates Stadium coming on April 8 ahead of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu eight days later.
But Madrid have three matches to play before then as the schedule ramps up considerably for the season run-in following the recent international break, hosting relegation-battling Leganes in LaLiga on Saturday night before the visit of Real Sociedad for the second leg of a Copa del Rey semi-final contest that Los Blancos lead 1-0 on aggregate following Endrick's winner in San Sebastian last month.
They also have a visit from Valencia three days before travelling to Arsenal, with Ancelotti facing a difficult balancing act in terms of rotation given they now sit three points behind in-form rivals Barcelona in a fierce three-way LaLiga title battle that also includes Atletico Madrid, whom they beat on penalties in the Champions League last 16.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Leganes, Ancelotti explained that first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is currently sidelined with a minor injury picked up during his return to Belgium action last week.
However, he is expected back soon with Madrid also hoping that left-back Ferland Mendy and ex-Arsenal loanee Dani Ceballos may also return from injury in time to face the Gunners.
'Courtois has a slight issue, we'll have him back in a few days,' Ancelotti said. 'We're trying to get Ceballos and Mendy back in time for the first leg against Arsenal.'
Asked if he could potentially rest Vinicius Jr against Leganes after he returned from international duty with Brazil, the Italian added: 'We'll see. He's back and he trained well, he's in pretty good condition.
'We have lots of games and I have the option to rotate, although most players are feeling pretty good. You'll see the lineup on Saturday.'
Other than Courtois, Mendy and Ceballos, Madrid remain without long-term absentees Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao at present as well as fellow defender Jesus Vallejo.
Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is suspended for the first leg against Arsenal, but Madrid are confident that Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and Ceballos will all be available despite Uefa this week opening an investigation into the quartet's conduct following the dramatic penalty shootout win over Atletico in which Julian Alvarez's successful spot-kick was ruled out after VAR ruled that he had accidentally touched the ball twice.
'We trust UEFA, let them investigate it,' Ancelotti said. 'We believe everything was in order, the players celebrated. We'll wait to see what they have to say, we trust everything will work out fine.'

Westfields open league account with convincing home victory

WESTFIELDS got their season off to a flying start as they overcame Pershore Town 3-1 in their opening Hellenic League Premier Division fixture. On a good day for Danny Moon's side the signings of Jamie Clarke, Adam Saunston, George Clarke, Ben Johns and Dan Bufton were confirmed before the match. Fields quickly opened their league account courtesy of another summer signing Adam Sauntson. Aidan Clark hit the crossbar before Archie Muirhead was brought down, resulting in Bailey Fuller scoring from the penalty spot. Clark almost put the game to bed before the break, but headed Kane Kahaki's cross off-target. Following the break Mason Godsall went close before youngster Arwyn Walby fired into the side-netting. Godsall then turned provider as his free-kick was headed home by Cam Davies to seal the points. Pershore were rewarded for their efforts with a late goal but could not prevent Fields from a comfortable win. The win ended a summer of change at Allpay Park as Danny Moon took over as manager following the resignation of Nic Morgan. Fields' chief executive Andy Morris said: 'We were sorry to receive Nick Morgan's resignation, he did a good job for the two years in charge and we wish him well in the future. 'Danny Moon has been appointed and has a vast knowledge of the local scene and good experience at this level. 'He is an ex-Westfields player and is aware of the club's standards. We are excited with the squad Danny has assembled, he has good staff and everyone is keen for the new season. 'The Hellenic Premier is a very strong league again this season and l can envisage a good start being important as we want to be a challenging for a top six finish.' Westfields completed their pre-season preparations on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat against Southern League Premier League side Evesham United. Fields goalkeeper Jack Oxenham made two smart saves to keep the visitors at bay during the first half. Westfields then took the lead early in the second half when Bailey Fuller cut in from the right hand side and curled a shot past the goalkeeper. Oxenham could nothing to stop the visitors equaliser, courtesy of a header at the near post. Both sides then introduced substitutes for the final 15 minutes and Evesham snatched the lead with a cracking 25-yard pile driver from Ion Richards which flew into the top corner. Westfields came all out for an equaliser and Evesham survived some anxious moments in the last few minutes to win the game by a close margin of 2-1.

Vlahovic and Goncalo Ramos' future intertwined as United wait

Manchester United may lose two of their potential striking targets to the same team. Striker search After missing out on Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike to Premier League rivals, United are still searching for number nine solutions. The news broke yesterday that United had narrowed their search down to Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Red Bull Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Nonetheless, should United also miss out on these options, they have been linked to loan options that could come at the end of August. Loan opportunities Juventus' relationship with Dusan Vlahovic is at an all-time low and the club is desperate to see the player leave the club this summer. Moreover, United have been linked to the Serbian and have also been credited with interest in Paris Saint-Germain's Portuguese attacker, Goncalo Ramos. AC Milan lurking United could swoop for either player but this is under threat by the summer activity of Italian giants AC Milan. The Rossoneri's interest in Vlahovic has already been reported on. Italian outlet Calciomercato assert that 'AC Milan is trying to intensify contacts to find the right formula for signing the Juventus number nine. This signing will only happen if the player reduces his net salary to €6-7 million.' The Juventus striker is said to be the club's 'main priority' but the club does have a back-up plan, involving another United target. It is reported that 'AC Milan, however, is also considering other options and their plan B is Goncalo Ramos, the Portuguese striker owned by PSG, who is seeking more playing time and who is looking at his transfer options.' PSG have no intention of selling Ramos, who they paid €65 million just two years ago. Nonetheless, they could be open to a loan move, something that Milan would favour due to their restricted financial situation.
