At this Miami marketplace, small business owners find community and learn to grow
Growing up in Kendall in the '90s, Liz Ceballos was like many young people at the time — she wanted to work at her local mall. 'I had a love for fashion, and I started working part-time at 16 at Dadeland Mall,' Ceballos, 45, told the Miami Herald. 'I loved to be around clothes and people.' That passion for fashion has since blossomed into something she never imagined. Ceballos now relies upon her decades of retail experience as the organizer of Capsule, a marketplace at Allapattah's River Landing Shops designed to support small business owners, including many Latina entrepreneurs. At Capsule, shop owners have their own spaces to sell their products, creating something akin to an indoor farmers market. Ceballos helps them understand how they can improve their businesses and work together to share customers. Capsule has space for between 12 to 20 businesses, depending on the size of the space required by tenants. There are also opportunities for a different set of vendors to sell their products in front of the store every Sunday and on the last Saturday of the month. Almost all of Capsule's tenants started out as vendors selling products on tables in front of the space itself or at farmers markets. 'I like seeing the evolution of businesses that start small. Seeing that happen is such a proud moment,' Ceballos said. When Ceballos was working her mall jobs as a teen, she was also a student at Miami Killian. By her senior year, she had already begun learning store management, and she continued to work in retail after her 1998 graduation. After a brief hiatus from retail where Ceballos worked as a flight attendant, she returned to Miami in 2005 and pivoted back into the retail sector. When the company she was working for had layoffs in 2019, Ceballos decided to put her retail experience to work and, within six weeks of her job ending, launched a clothing business. The challenge of starting a business proved to be a learning experience. 'I have background experience in managing big teams, but it's different when you're by yourself,' she said. The first few months for Ceballos' business went well — until the start of the pandemic in March 2020. She quickly realized that people weren't buying clothes because they were generally staying at home. 'I just thought of ways to pivot, because I wasn't going to give up,' she said. 'I started selling fun fashionable masks.' As COVID-19 restrictions lessened, Ceballos began attending farmers markets and created an Instagram account called Herpreneur By Liz to showcase the different small business owners she met. But Ceballos noticed ways that their businesses could be improved. Some business owners needed social media profiles and websites to better engage their customers. For others, an improved customer service experience could make a difference. 'People missed out on opportunities,' she said. As Ceballos' videos featuring small businesses gained traction on her social media, she began producing events that featured local woman-owned businesses. By 2024, Ceballos had built a reputation for producing pop-up markets throughout South Florida. After her pop-up market at River Landing did well, representatives from the shopping center asked her to come onboard as a business consultant for Capsule. In her new role, Ceballos' background has given her perspective and credibility that seems to resonate with the other small business owners in the space. 'I have my clothing boutique in there, and we are all brainstorming on ideas around collaborative things we can do to work together and make a stronger impact,' she said. For example, they might post social media content that features clothing from one person's business and shoes from another — or encourage customers to take the same mix-and-match approach. At a time when e-commerce has taken over and people are quick to shop online, Ceballos believes concept stores like Capsule represent a positive future for in-person retail. She sees that small business owners can band together to achieve success rather than spending more money to lease or buy their own space. She has also noticed how customers respond to being a part of that community. 'It's a totally different, unique experience, and the customer feels that connection,' she said. Seeing small businesses elevate themselves in real time is something that empowers Ceballos, and she wants to keep seeing that moving forward. 'I want to continue to support the small business community and my community platform,' she said.

Ex-Arsenal star subject to vile chants during Real Madrid clash as referee stops match
Real Madrid's La Liga clash with Getafe was briefly stopped on Wednesday after former Arsenal star Dani Ceballos was on the receiving end of some vile chants after he replaced Arda Guler Former Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos was subjected to vile chants after coming off the bench during Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Getafe on Wednesday, with the referee briefly pausing the game as a result. Ceballos replaced Arda Guler, who scored the only goal of the game, in the 78th minute and the 28-year-old was greeted with chants of "Ceballos, die" from the Getafe fans, according to reports from Spain. The referee stopped the match due to the chants and spoke to both Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti and Getafe manager Jose Bordalas about the incident. An announcement was then made over the PA system calling for the chants to stop and they did, with the game resuming without further incident. Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, who was previously team-mates with Ceballos at Madrid, condemned the chants in a post-match interview with DAZN. "I think they are not nice for any player," Mayoral said. "We have to eliminate that from football and sports. Hopefully it doesn't happen again." Ceballos is not the only Madrid player who has been subjected to chants of "die" this season, with defender Raul Asencio targeted by Real Sociedad fans during their Copa del Rey clash back in February. Madrid won the game 1-0, but Ancelotti substituted Asencio at half-time as he felt the 21-year-old has been "affected" by the chants. Speaking after the match, Ancelotti explained: "Vinicius spoke to the referee, the referee stopped the game, he applied the protocol, that was what had to happen. "I took him off because of two things, he was affected, and he had a yellow card, so I preferred to take him off. I think nobody likes that a stadium chants for you to die, I think he was affected in that sense. He wasn't exactly happy, I preferred to take him off in case how he was feeling could affect the game." Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal added: "The insults should be condemned, we don't like them... there are other ways to condemn the actions that others may have committed. We don't think this is the right way." Madrid's win over Getafe leaves them four points behind rivals Barcelona in the La Liga title race. However, both David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga picked up injuries during the game and Ancelotti has admitted they are unlikely to be back in time for the Copa del Rey final on Saturday. "We'll have to see tomorrow," Ancelotti said when asked if Camavinga could feature in the final against Barcelona. "He and Alaba both had muscular discomfort. Recovery for Saturday will be difficult. "It's a final. Maybe there's a favourite, but in a final, anything can happen." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. New footage shows why Thomas Partey is suspended for Champions League semi-final
New footage has emerged over why Thomas Partey is suspended for Arsenal's Champions League semi-final first leg clash against PSG. Partey was booked during Arsenal's quarter-final second leg win over Real Madrid – but TV cameras failed to show a proper replay of the incident. The yellow card shown to Partey in the 85th minute at the Bernabeu was the third he's picked up in the European club competition this term overall. Three yellows mean Arsenal midfielder Partey will serve a one-game ban and won't be able to feature against PSG at the Emirates on April 29. It's a significant blow to the Gunners, given Partey played all 180 minutes in both legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Real Madrid. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Declan Rice was left furious at Partey for receiving the yellow card – and was seen going mad at his Arsenal teammate – but why was Partey booked at Real Madrid and what actually happened? Scroll on to find out… Party was booked against Real Madrid for shoving Dani Ceballos to the ground right in front of French referee Francois Letexier. It occurred during a break in play after Antonio Rudiger was shown a yellow card himself for slamming into the back of Mikel Merino with force. Following the poor challenge from Real Madrid defender Rudiger, Partey went to collect the ball to take a free-kick, which was at Ceballos' feet. Ceballos saw Partey coming and decided to move the ball with his foot, which left the Ghanian furious. Partey and Ceballos tussled a little before the former pushed the Real Madrid star to the floor, ultimately leading to a needless yellow card. The new footage emerged via social media on Tuesday, with football influencer and Arsenal fan Rory Cook posting the clip on his X account. Partey's one-game ban for the Champions League semi-final first leg showdown against PSG is a massive blow for Arsenal. The 31-year-old is an important cog in the Gunners' side and has been in fine form across the past few months. More Trending But Mikel Arteta will now be forced to reshuffle his midfield, with the Arsenal manager usually reluctant to change a settled team. Rice has excelled as a No.8 – particularly against Real Madrid – but may have to play deeper in a No.6 role because of Partey's absence. Jorginho would've been an ideal replacement for Partey but he has a rib injury. It means that Merino, who has been featuring as a makeshift striker, may have to play in midfield with Leandro Trossard starting up top instead. Former Gunner races to prove fitness ahead of Real Madrid's trip to Emirates
Former Gunner races to prove fitness ahead of Real Madrid's trip to Emirates Dani Ceballos is pushing to return from injury in time to face his former club in the Champions League. Photo by Juan ManuelDani Ceballos, who spent two largely forgettable seasons at Arsenal, is racing to recover in time for Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final clash against his former club. Advertisement The Spanish midfielder is now working to cut short a two-month injury layoff in the hope of returning for the first leg at the Emirates on 8 April. Ceballos sustained a semimembranosus (hamstring) muscle injury in his left leg, affecting the tendon, during the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Real Sociedad on 26 February. He played the full 90 minutes but left the field visibly limping. Scans the following day confirmed the damage, and an initial timeline of at least two months on the sidelines was set. Photo by Juan ManuelHowever, according to Superdeporte, his recovery is progressing well, and he may return ahead of schedule. 'The goal is to be available for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal,' the paper reports. Ceballos could resume ball work this week and potentially rejoin full training next week, depending on how he responds. Advertisement Though his official return date remains set for late April, Madrid's recent record of accelerating injury returns offers hope. Jude Bellingham returned early from a right leg muscle injury, and Ceballos himself previously came back in just one month from a grade III ankle sprain initially expected to sideline him for two. The likes of Éder Militão and Kylian Mbappé have also defied medical estimates this season. Photo byCeballos' return would be timely. After yet another season on the margins under Carlo Ancelotti, the Andalusian has worked his way back into the side, as he tends to do as the season comes to a close. Advertisement His ability to manage tempo and circulate possession has seen him rotate effectively with Luka Modrić who is now 39. Though his time at Arsenal never quite lived up to the early promise, flashes of brilliance faded into inconsistency, and by the end, most fans had moved on, Dani Ceballos may yet return to north London with something to prove.

Real Madrid hopeful over new major triple injury boost for Arsenal showdown
Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to have three players back for the huge Champions League showdown with Arsenal as Real Madrid face important selection decisions amid a packed fixture list. The current holders and record 15-time winners take on Mikel Arteta's side in a heavyweight two-legged quarter-final tie next month, with the opening fixture at the Emirates Stadium coming on April 8 ahead of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu eight days later. But Madrid have three matches to play before then as the schedule ramps up considerably for the season run-in following the recent international break, hosting relegation-battling Leganes in LaLiga on Saturday night before the visit of Real Sociedad for the second leg of a Copa del Rey semi-final contest that Los Blancos lead 1-0 on aggregate following Endrick's winner in San Sebastian last month. They also have a visit from Valencia three days before travelling to Arsenal, with Ancelotti facing a difficult balancing act in terms of rotation given they now sit three points behind in-form rivals Barcelona in a fierce three-way LaLiga title battle that also includes Atletico Madrid, whom they beat on penalties in the Champions League last 16. Speaking ahead of the clash with Leganes, Ancelotti explained that first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is currently sidelined with a minor injury picked up during his return to Belgium action last week. However, he is expected back soon with Madrid also hoping that left-back Ferland Mendy and ex-Arsenal loanee Dani Ceballos may also return from injury in time to face the Gunners. 'Courtois has a slight issue, we'll have him back in a few days,' Ancelotti said. 'We're trying to get Ceballos and Mendy back in time for the first leg against Arsenal.' Asked if he could potentially rest Vinicius Jr against Leganes after he returned from international duty with Brazil, the Italian added: 'We'll see. He's back and he trained well, he's in pretty good condition. 'We have lots of games and I have the option to rotate, although most players are feeling pretty good. You'll see the lineup on Saturday.' Other than Courtois, Mendy and Ceballos, Madrid remain without long-term absentees Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao at present as well as fellow defender Jesus Vallejo. Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is suspended for the first leg against Arsenal, but Madrid are confident that Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger and Ceballos will all be available despite Uefa this week opening an investigation into the quartet's conduct following the dramatic penalty shootout win over Atletico in which Julian Alvarez's successful spot-kick was ruled out after VAR ruled that he had accidentally touched the ball twice. 'We trust UEFA, let them investigate it,' Ancelotti said. 'We believe everything was in order, the players celebrated. We'll wait to see what they have to say, we trust everything will work out fine.'
