Stephen Schwartz may add Wicked movie's 'Popular' ending to Broadway

Express Tribune16-06-2025
Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz is considering adding the film version's new extended ending of 'Popular' to the Broadway stage show.
The updated version, sung by Ariana Grande as Glinda in the 2024 Wicked movie, features new key changes and showcases more of Grande's soprano range.
Schwartz revealed in a recent interview with BuzzFeed UK that although this ending was written specifically for the film, he now feels it could enhance the stage version. 'If I had thought of this ending then, I would have done it,' Schwartz said, noting the potential of integrating the movie's version into the long-running Broadway production.
Grande, who stars alongside Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba), originally hesitated about the dramatic vocal shift but eventually embraced the idea. In an interview with The Emsolation Podcast, Grande shared that the final choreography and musical arrangement were a spontaneous decision made just days before shooting. Director Jon M. Chu, cinematographer Alice Brooks, and choreographer Chris Scott were inspired by the architecture of Shiz University's hallway, prompting the team to adapt the number's staging and vocals on the spot.
The film adaptation of Wicked was released in two parts, with Part One debuting November 22, 2024, and Part Two set for November 21, 2025. Alongside Grande and Erivo, the cast includes Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Ethan Slater.
If approved, the 'Popular' film ending could be the first musical number from Wicked's cinematic debut to make its way back into the original Broadway production.

Why did Sydney Sweeney attend Jeff Bezos' wedding?

Actress Sydney Sweeney was among the many celebrities spotted at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's extravagant $50 million wedding in Venice, Italy. While some questioned her connection to the billionaire couple, sources tell Page Six her presence was tied to business, not personal ties. Sweeney, best known for roles in Euphoria, The White Lotus, and Anyone But You, is set to star in and executive produce the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film Split Fiction. The movie is a video game adaptation directed by Jon M. Chu (Wicked) and penned by the writers of Deadpool & Wolverine. With Bezos' company backing the film, insiders say Sweeney attended the wedding as a gesture of respect to the studio head. 'She is not friends with either one of them,' a source told Page Six, 'but came to pay respects to the 'boss,' just like in the old days of Hollywood.' During the weekend festivities, Sweeney was seen walking through Venice with actor Orlando Bloom and reportedly danced with Tom Brady during the reception. Her attendance added to the star-studded guest list, which included Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, and Jerry Seinfeld. Sweeney previously worked with Amazon on the 2021 Prime Video film The Voyeurs and continues to build her presence in both acting and production. Split Fiction, which follows two authors trapped in their fictional worlds, is currently in development and seeking a co-star for Sweeney.

Amanda Seyfried reflects on her challenging Wicked audition experience

Amanda Seyfried has once again opened up about her intense audition process for Wicked, confirming that she auditioned six times for the role of Glinda and describing the experience as both grueling and transformative. Speaking on the June 19 episode of Backstage's In the Envelope podcast, the Oscar-nominated actress revealed that the auditions took place in 2021 while she was filming Hulu's The Dropout, a demanding schedule she nonetheless tried to navigate in pursuit of the part. 'I auditioned like six times for Wicked. I barely had time to do it, but I made it work,' she said. 'I worked my ass off for years and years on that music.' Seyfried shared that she trained with a vocal coach, attended weekend auditions, and recorded performances including the number 'Popular' which she submitted to director Jon M. Chu. She also previously recalled, during a Happy Sad Confused podcast appearance earlier this year, singing with Cynthia Erivo during one of the final stages of the process. 'That was a moment,' Seyfried said. 'Even though I didn't get the role, I felt the strongest I ever have vocally.' Despite not being cast, the Mamma Mia! star emphasized that the process was creatively rewarding. 'I didn't get the part, but I came out a better singer,' she told Backstage. 'It gave me the confidence I needed.' Ultimately, the coveted role of Glinda went to pop star and Broadway alum Ariana Grande, who also auditioned five times. Cynthia Erivo was cast as Elphaba. Both actresses were officially announced in late 2021. .
