Tata chairman meets Mamata to explore investment prospects in West Bengal
In a post on X, the Trinamool Congress said Mamata Banerjee hosted Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons and the Tata Group, for a constructive dialogue on Bengal's industrial growth and emerging opportunities.
The meeting reflected Bengal's commitment to fostering meaningful public-private partnerships that drive innovation, investment and inclusive development, it added.
The ruling party also mentioned that their conversation centred on deepening the Tata Group's presence in the state.
At the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) held in February this year, Banerjee had mentioned during her speech at the inaugural ceremony that the Tata Group chairman could not make it to the summit owing to certain exigencies.
Banerjee had a detailed discussion with him on the eve of the summit. 'He has assured me that they want to invest more and more in Bengal. And he will come to Bengal very soon and discuss in detail,' she had said then.
Banerjee had also requested a direct flight connecting Kolkata and Europe.
The Tata Group and Banerjee share a chequered history that goes back to 2008, when an indefinite agitation by land-losers led to the pullout of Tata Motors' Nano project in Singur. It was a movement supported by Banerjee, then in the Opposition.
It is widely believed that the incident cast a shadow over the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2011, where Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress swept to power, bringing an end to 34 years of Left Front rule.
The Tata Group, however, continued with its businesses in Bengal through TCS, Tata Steel and Tata Hitachi. TCS, which already has a significant presence in New Town, Rajarhat, has taken up 20 acres at Bengal Silicon Valley, the upcoming tech hub.
Banerjee had recently posted on X that the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has sanctioned the Phase-I building plan for the TCS office campus at Bengal Silicon Valley.

KMC razes illegal stalls, reclaims govt plot on Anwar Shah Road
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: The KMC on Saturday deployed earth movers to pull down shops and other structures that encroached on a govt plot on Prince Anwar Shah Road near Lord's crossing. The plot, owned by the state information and cultural affairs department at 355, Prince Anwar Shah Road, does not have a boundary wall, allowing encroachers a free run. According to a KMC official, the drive was planned at the civic headquarters and was kept a secret to prevent the news from reaching the encroachers so that they did not get a chance to put up resistance. "We planned to conduct the drive with police without informing the encroachers about it, as that would have led to a ruckus and our work would have been hampered. Last time, the drive to oust encroachers from the state-owned plot was met with resistance. So, we decided on this surprise drive," said a senior KMC official. A KMC solid waste management official said the civic team was mobilised at the Lord's crossing around 1 pm for the demolition. The presence of a large posse of policemen helped civic officials continue with the drive unhindered. "When we left, it was late evening. Back in June 2024, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had mentioned the encroachment on the Prince Anwar Shah plot while speaking about govt properties and public spaces being taken over illegally. There was an attempt to free the land in 2018, but it was unsuccessful, she had said. Within hours of Banerjee's announcement last year, a police team had visited the plot and collected the names, addresses and phone numbers of the stall owners there. A KMC official had said they were demarcating a 7.5-cottah plot, while owners of the unauthorised structures on the land claimed it was 29-cottah. Now that the illegal structures have been pulled down, the KMC will calculate the exact area and build a wall around it. Stalls selling food, vegetables and lottery tickets and a Trinamool office were among those that occupied the plot, said an official.

Kochi corporation faces heat over missing building data in K-Smart portal
Kochi: Of the 2.5 lakh building permits assessed within Kochi city limits, data related to nearly 50,000 buildings is missing from the Kochi Corporation's database—a serious issue that has disrupted tax payments and licence renewals for many property owners. So far, over 1,450 building owners have lodged formal complaints with the civic body. Corporation officials said efforts are underway to physically verify missing records and minimize inconvenience to the public. The issue primarily stems from the time when TCS was managing the e-governance programme. After the contract was scrapped due to delays and payment disputes, the private firm withheld data, including critical building permit details. Opposition councillors blame the situation on the administration's failure to spot discrepancies during the software transition. "Thousands of building numbers were omitted from the e-portal. The owners only realize this when they try to pay tax. We suspect the actual number could be higher than 50,000," said Antony Kureethra, leader of the opposition. MG Aristotle, secretary of the UDF parliamentary party and member of the finance committee, pointed out that according to Section 240 of municipal rules, building numbers can only be omitted after clearing tax dues and restoration requires permission from the regional joint director. "When the transition from Sanchaya software to K-Smart took place, tens of thousands of buildings were left out. People only discover the issue when they attempt to make payments," said Aristotle, adding that the corporation still lacks clarity on the total number of missing records. Officials have considered assigning sub-numbers to the omitted buildings, but this creates legal complications, especially when the original numbers are mentioned in title deeds and official documents. A senior official maintained that data pertaining to most buildings are now available with K-Smart. However, he failed to give the exact numbers but took credit for reinforcing the stalled e-governance project in corporation limits. "When we assumed power in 2020, the e-governance project was delayed by a decade. At a time when even the Kuttampuzha panchayat, which is located in the remote area of the district, issued e-birth certificates and marriage certificates, people had to stand in queue in front of the Kochi corporation office to register birth, death, marriage, etc and get certificates," he said. "Tiding over all the crises during the tenure of the previous two councils, we gathered data, roped in IKM, and implemented the e-governance project by 2022. Now, all our services are available through K-Smart," the official added.

Trinamool demands apology from Himanta Sarma for 'divisive' Bengali language remark
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has come down heavily on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his recent remarks linking the Bengali language to the identification of illegal immigrants. The party accused Sarma of promoting linguistic discrimination and demanded a public apology or his resignation from the constitutional spokesperson and party IT wing head Debangshu Bhattacharya criticised the Assam government's decision to issue an NRC notice to a member of the Rajbanshi community, calling it an overreach of also condemned Sarma's statement that speaking Bengali could help identify Bangladeshis, saying it reflects the BJP's larger pattern of targeting Bengali-speaking individuals. 'Bengali is the third most spoken language in India and second most spoken in Assam,' said Bhattacharya. 'It is shocking that the Chief Minister forgets the contributions of Bengali speakers to the freedom movement and the existence of a state like West Bengal where Bengali is the primary language. The BJP has shown time and again that it is against Bengali-speaking people. Their disrespect towards the language is being noticed.'Echoing similar concerns, TMC MP Sushmita Dev called Sarma's comments a direct attack on the Bengali language and its speakers. In Goalpara district, authorities recently cleared 140 hectares of forest land in Paikan Reserve Forest, displacing over 1,000 families. Opposition parties claim many of those affected were Bengali-speaking Dhubri, the government has reportedly demolished homes of around 1,400 Bengali-origin Muslim families to make way for a power project, further fuelling allegations of targeted leaders warned that linguistic discrimination, coupled with forced evictions and profiling, could deepen alienation and trigger unrest.
