Los Angeles Dodgers placed third baseman Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list on Thursday because of bruised left knee after he was injured during Wednesday's win against the Chicago White Sox.
In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Muncy departed after a collision while tagging out Chicago's Michael A. Taylor on a stolen-base attempt in the sixth inning. The play immediately preceded Clayton Kershaw's 3,000th career strikeout.
Taylor also left the game with a contusion on the back of his left shoulder.
Muncy, 34, is batting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs in 81 games. He was a Phase 2 finalist for a starting spot in the All-Star Game but lost out to the San Diego Padres' Manny Machado.
In 10 major league seasons, eight of which have been with the Dodgers, Muncy is a two-time All-Star and a career .230 hitter with 208 home runs and 592 RBIs.
His 203 home runs with the Dodgers are tied for seventh all-time in franchise history with Matt Kemp. Duke Snider leads the franchise with 389 home runs and Eric Karros is the all-time leader in its Los Angeles tenure with 270.
Ruiz, 26, is a career .243 hitter with seven home runs and 57 RBIs in 178 games for the San Diego Padres (2022), Milwaukee Brewers (2022) and Athletics (2023-24). In 2023, he led the American League in steals with 67.
The Dodgers obtained him in an April 2 trade with the Athletics for minor league right-hander Carlos Duran. Ruiz was batting .292 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and 38 stolen bases in 44 attempts over 66 games with Oklahoma City.
The Dodgers also designated outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment and claimed infielder CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees.
Berroa, 26, was purchased by the Dodgers from the Toronto Blue Jays on May 12 and has not appeared in a game for Los Angeles. He played in 28 games for the Blue Jays in 2024 and hit .189 (7-for-37).
Alexander, 28, did not get into a game for the Yankees. He has played 10 major league games, including six for the Athletics earlier this season, and batted .160 (4-for-25).

Red Sox place RHP Liam Hendriks (hip) on 15-day IL

(Photo credit: Eric Canha-Imagn Images) The Boston Red Sox placed right-handed reliever Liam Hendriks on the 15-day injured list on Friday, retroactive to Wednesday, with right hip inflammation. In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled right-handed reliever Nick Burdi from Triple-A Worcester. Hendriks, 36, is 0-2 in 14 appearances with a 6.59 ERA in 13 2/3 innings this season. He did not make his season debut until April 20 due to a compressed nerve in his right forearm. A three-time All-Star closer, Hendriks underwent treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in early 2023 and missed all of the 2024 season following Tommy John surgery. In 14 seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2011-13), Toronto Blue Jays (2014, 2015), Kansas City Royals (2014), Oakland Athletics (2016-20), Chicago White Sox (2021-23) and Red Sox, Hendriks is 33-36 with 116 saves and a 3.88 ERA in 663 2/3 innings over 490 games (44 starts). This will be the 32-year-old Burdi's second stint this season with the Red Sox, having allowed four hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings in two previous appearances. At Triple-A Worcester, Burdi is 4-0 with four saves and an 0.48 ERA in 15 appearances. In parts of six seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-20), Chicago Cubs (2023), New York Yankees (2024) and Red Sox, Burdi is 3-2 with a 5.93 ERA in 33 games spanning 27 1/3 innings. --Field Level Media

Three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield retires after 9 seasons

(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) Whit Merrifield, a three-time MLB All-Star who last played for the Atlanta Braves in 2024, announced his retirement Tuesday after nine years in the big leagues. In a statement released through his agency, Warner Sports Management, Merrifield cited his family -- namely a daughter born in March 2024 -- as a reason to step away. 'I was never talented enough to just show up and play,' Merrifield said. 'Baseball required my full focus and energy for me to compete at the level I wanted to, and I realize I can no longer give that effort. 'At this point in life, I'd much rather chase around a toddler than chase sliders.' The 36-year-old infielder, a ninth-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in 2010, spent more than six seasons in the minor leagues before making his major league debut at age 27 in 2016. Merrifield ends his career with 1,249 hits -- including 94 home runs and 256 doubles -- and a .280 batting average in 1,147 games. He led the American League in stolen bases three times, finishing his career with 218 swipes. 'Since I've now had some time away from the game, I've had a chance to reflect on my individual career for the first time in my life,' Merrifield said. 'I'm proud of myself. The toughness I developed and the things I was able to accomplish, nobody outside of my camp thought possible.' Merrifield quickly established himself as a premier player for Kansas City after his call-up, earning MVP votes in 2018 after batting a career-best .304. He followed that up in 2019 with a .302 season that was highlighted by his first All-Star nod. He added another All-Star selection in 2021 and a third in 2023 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Merrifield signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024 but was released after batting .199 in 53 games. He finished the year with the Braves, with whom he hit .248. 'I loved all the moments,' Merrifield said. 'All the highs and even all the lows. I'm grateful for the way this game molded me. I can't wait to tell my story to my daughter one day.' --Field Level Media

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw on the cusp of history vs. White Sox

(Photo credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images) The countdown to 3,000 will be at the forefront when Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw takes the mound Wednesday night against the visiting Chicago White Sox. The three-time National League Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL Most Valuable Player is three strikeouts away from becoming the 20th pitcher in major league history to reach 3,000 in his career and just the fourth left-hander. The others: Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson and CC Sabathia. Kershaw also is set to become only the third pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters while playing for just one team, joining Walter Johnson (Washington Senators) and Bob Gibson (St. Louis Cardinals). 'A chance to strike out three at home (will) be really cool,' said Kershaw, whose home accomplishments include his first-ever strikeout in 2008 when he set down the Cardinals' Skip Schumaker. Kershaw (4-0, 3.03 ERA) has earned the win in each of his past four starts, allowing one run on two hits over six innings Thursday in a 3-1 victory at Colorado as he inched closer to his milestone with five strikeouts. 'For him to be able to do it in the home whites, it's going to be fun, exciting,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. It will be just Kershaw's sixth career start against the White Sox. The 37-year-old is 2-1 against Chicago, with a 2.90 ERA. Los Angeles earned a 6-1 victory in Tuesday's series opener when Shohei Ohtani hit his 30th home run of the season, while Andy Pages and Michael Conforto each drove in two runs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed one run over seven innings. Ohtani now has at least 30 home runs in five consecutive seasons. The White Sox received two hits and their lone RBI from Lenyn Sosa on Tuesday. Chicago is the worst-hitting team in baseball with a .220 batting average and is in the bottom third of the major leagues with 736 strikeouts after adding 12 on Tuesday. Now they are poised to be a part of Kershaw's historic night. 'Very good pitcher obviously (and) still performing well,' White Sox manager Will Venable said of Kershaw. The two were teammates on the Dodgers for a brief time in 2016. 'Probably going to be able to spin the ball for the rest of his life,' Venable said. 'Just a competitor that presents a lot of problems for hitters on both sides. We'll have our work cut out for us.' Chicago is set to send left-hander Brandon Eisert (2-1, 4.33 ERA) to the mound in a likely opener role. He has made 36 appearances (two starts) and thrown 35 1/3 innings with 41 strikeouts. Still classified as a rookie, he appeared in three games in 2024 for the Toronto Blue Jays. He has never faced the Dodgers. White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas, who was traded from the Dodgers last season as part of a three-team deal that landed Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech in Los Angeles, received his World Series ring before the game on Tuesday. Vargas is on a 1-for-25 slide with 10 strikeouts over his past seven games after going 0-for-4 in the series opener. Chicago rookie Chase Meidroth, who grew up in nearby Manhattan Beach, went 0-for-4 in his first career game at Dodger Stadium.--Field Level Media
