The Pokémon Company has just announced a new expansion for Pokémon TCG Pocket, Celestial Guardians, which is set to be released next week, on April 30, 2025.
Celestial Guardians will be a full expansion like Genetic Apex and Space-Time Smackdown rather than a limited themed expansion like the recent Shining Revelry and Triumphant Light sets. It will launch with two booster packs to open, one for Solgaleo and one for Lunala, the signature Legendary Pokémon from Pokémon Sun and Moon.

The Celestial Guardians expansion will have a big focus on Alolan Pokémon, including the aforementioned Legendary Pokémon, the Alolan first partner Pokémon – Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio – and Alolan forms like Alolan Raichu and Alolan Meowth. It also features Pokémon originally found in Alola, such as Oricorio, which will have its various forms available as separate cards.
The new expansion's trailer also revealed Trainer cards focused on Trial Leaders from Pokémon Sun and Moon, with effects focused on most available types in the game right now, although they seem to be primarily focused on specific Pokémon cards rather than the type archetypes as a whole. Celestial Guardians will also bring with it the first Immersive Full Art card based on a Trainer card, with a card based on Lillie shown in the trailer.
In addition to the new expansion, The Pokémon Company also revealed in a press release that a new event is coming to the game next week to celebrate Pokémon TCG Pocket's six-month anniversary. This event, which runs from April 29 to May 12, 2025, will give players the opportunity to earn multiple Rayquaza ex Promo cards, as well as additional cosmetics and other Promo cards.
The Pokémon Company previously promised to overhaul Pokémon TCG Pocket's controversial trading system, which was met with backlash upon its introduction earlier this year. The changes were said to be coming prior to the end of Fall 2025, and will change the required items for trading and at some point expand the cards available to trade, including the addition of higher rarity cards and limited-time Promo cards. It's unknown at this stage if the changes to trading will be available alongside Celestial Guardians, or if they'll come at a later date.

Couple Save for Wedding Then Senior Dog Got Sick—They Had To Make A Choice
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When their 15-year-old Chihuahua mix Elvis fell ill, Heather and her fiancé knew exactly what to do. Instead of planning their wedding, Heather and her partner redirected the money to save their dog's life. As Elvis began suffering seizures Heather, 29, from Maine rushed him to the vet. "We've had multiple ER visits and appointments with his normal doctor to try and figure out why he's passing out/having seizures. This weekend, he stayed at the emergency vet, and then we brought him back the night we got him back because he had two seizures again," Heather told Newsweek. Elvis, who also has early-stage kidney disease, suffered three episodes in a single night, prompting Heather to rush him to the ER again. Despite extensive testing—including X-rays, EKGs, ultrasounds, and a heart monitor—the cause remains unclear. Heather and her fiancé with their senior dog. Heather and her fiancé with their senior dog. @ "They kept going back from neurology to cardiology to try and figure out which one is the issue. We still don't exactly know what the main issue is, it could just be a factor of everything being a little off," Heather said. But thankfully, after a few days care from veterinarians, Elvis was ready to come home. "We picked him up last night and let me say the king is back," Heather said, delighted. "We're still going to take it easy, but I could not be happier at this moment." The couple had planned a low-key elopement this summer, with Elvis front and center. "I haven't nailed down the wedding plan yet. I know Elvis is older, and I want him to be a part of it. We have a photoshoot scheduled in August with him. We had planned to elope at the end of this summer and have a low-key, backyard event with immediate family, so that way Elvis could be a guaranteed part of it," Heather said. "I'll go into debt over my dog but not over a wedding. I think the plan now is just to figure out something small with Elvis there and plan a bigger celebration at some point later," she said, although the couple did not share the full cost of the vet bill. According to a poll by Talker Research for the insurance company MetLife, the average pet owner spent $2,085.60 on their animals in 2024. Despite pet owners increasingly seeing their pets as part of the family, a survey by PetSmart Charities found that 52 percent of owners have skipped or declined medical care for their pet. Of those, 71 percent cite cost as the key factor, whether because they could not afford it, they did not think it was worth the cost, or both. Amber Batteiger, from Embrace Pet Insurance previously told Newsweek: "Our average individual claim cost in 2024 was $445, but pet emergencies can cost tens of thousands of dollars." Because of this, she recommended pet owners have an emergency fund for pet medical issues, aiming for around $2,000 per pet. The couple shared how they spent their wedding fund on saving their pet, with the video on Instagram gaining more than 40,000 views since being posted earlier this week. "Would give everything I have for this little boy," the caption says, while the on-screen text reads: "When you spend your whole wedding budget saving your 15 year old dog." "Elvis deserves the whole world," said one commenter. While another wrote: "They are worth every single penny." "I've always said Elvis comes first; he lives a better life than me because I owe him my life. I got him in high school, my sister, who passed away actually picked him out... I was the first person he let hold, and it was soulmates from there," Heather said. "I'm not kidding when I say I love him more than anything in the world (maybe fiancé excluded)."

Why Are Cats Obsessed With Concrete Slabs?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Cat owners have been descending on hardware stores on an unusual mission—picking up a concrete slab, typically for patios and garden paths, for their feline friend to lounge on. Costing as little as $2, simple blocks of concrete are bringing unexpected joy to cats everywhere as owners share adorable reactions on social media. Why Are People Buying Concrete for Cats? For many pet owners, the trend is about enrichment, comfort, and fun. Indoor cats, in particular, seem to benefit from the novelty of the cool, textured surface. "I just decided to hop on the trend because I usually avoid trends, but this one seemed like a fun little idea," Zach Hotaling from Atlanta told Newsweek. He recently shared the moment his cats Nanaki and JoJo were surprised with the concrete treat. Pictures from TikTok of cat owners with a concrete slab, left, for their felines, right. In a video on TikTok, he shared the moment his feline were delighted by the gift of concrete. Gracie Garcia from Texas had similar motivations when she picked up a piece of concrete for her cat Louie. "I saw people online talking about how concrete stays cool, and, since my cat loves lying on cool surfaces in the summer, I thought a concrete slab would be an easy, inexpensive way to keep them comfy—and they love it," Garcia told Newsweek. Why Do Cats Like Concrete? Cat behaviorists say there are plenty of reasons cats might be drawn to a humble concrete block—from its shape and height to the texture and temperature. "If you have an indoor cat, and space, then buying a slab of concrete is a fun idea," Celia Haddon, cat behaviorist and author of Being Your Cat, told Newsweek. "It shouldn't cost a lot, and you might be able to just find one in builders' skip for free. Put it in a sunlit place if you want it to warm up. It will retain the heat well." There is a psychological appeal too. "One of the funniest things in cat behavior is the way they like sitting in boxes—not just real boxes but rectangular shapes, which give an illusion of being a box," Haddon said. "I would say 'If a concrete square slab fits, your cat sits.'" Anita Kelsey, feline behaviorist and author of The Little Book of Extraordinary Cats, echoed the sentiment. "Concrete can be particularly appealing because of its temperature-regulating properties. The texture of concrete also plays a role, as it's rough and scratchy, which some cats find soothing or stimulating," she told Newsweek. JoJo, left, and Louie, right, enjoying their concrete slabs. JoJo, left, and Louie, right, enjoying their concrete slabs. @renusdelph & @boujeemomof3 - TikTok Is Concrete Safe for Cats? While the popular trend of buying concrete for cats is mostly a good idea, there are some considerations. "Ensure the concrete is clean and has not come from a construction site or any area where it may have been exposed to chemicals, oils, or other harmful substances," said Kelsey. It is also important to keep an eye on the temperature of the concrete itself. "Concrete in direct sunlight can become extremely hot and may burn your cat's paw pads or contribute to overheating," Kelsey said. "While cats are generally good at self-regulating their body temperature and will likely move if it becomes uncomfortable, it's still best to provide shade, allow access during cooler times of the day, and monitor the surface temperature regularly."
