Kedah civil servant, accomplice remanded over RM300,000 contract abuse
The suspects, both in their 30s, were remanded for five days until July 6 following an application before magistrate Siti Nor Hasliza Md Ali earlier today.
According to a source, the suspects were picked up between 11am and 2pm yesterday after presenting themselves at the Kedah MACC office to assist with investigations.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the civil servant had abused his position between 2020 and 2021, by conspiring with a company to secure financial benefits for both suspects through the awarded contract," the source said.
Kedah MACC director Datuk Nazli Rasyid Sulong confirmed the arrests when contacted.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Three-year-old injured after being attacked by dog in Puchong
SERDANG: A three-year-old boy suffered injuries to his left calf after being bitten by a dog while walking home from a playground with his grandmother at Lake Edge Puchong here yesterday morning. Serdang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the 8am incident occurred when the boy and his grandmother were suddenly attacked by a German Shepherd mix that had wandered out of its owner's house. "The child sustained serious injuries to his left calf from the bite," he said in a statement today. Following the incident, a 60-year-old woman believed to be the owner of the dog was called in to assist with investigations. "Initial investigations revealed that the woman did not possess a valid dog licence issued by the local authorities," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 289 of the Penal Code for negligence involving animals. Upon conviction, the offence carries a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both. Police urged all pet owners to ensure their animals are properly cared for and do not pose a threat to public safety. The Serdang district police headquarters also called on the public to provide any information related to the incident or other crimes by contacting 03-8074 2222 or the nearest police station.

MACC calls 61 witnesses in MEX II project probe
KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has summoned 61 witnesses in its ongoing investigation into the Maju Expressway (MEX II) extension project. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the matter and said all the witnesses in question had been called recently. He said the amount of property seized involving a Tan Sri also remained the same as previously announced. "I have given my officers a maximum of two months to complete the investigation papers for this case and I believe that the investigation papers will be completed in less than two months to be submitted to the DPP (Deputy Public Prosecutor)," he said. Azam said this at a press conference after witnessing the handover ceremony of the new Kelantan MACC director Azmin Yusoff and the former director, Rosli Husain, here today. On May 29, various assets including luxury vehicles, jewellery, designer handbags and cash worth RM32 million were seized from a Tan Sri who is being investigated by the MACC over false claims and misuse of loan bonds for the construction of a highway in the Klang Valley. According to sources, all the luxury items were seized by MACC Investigation Division investigating officers after raiding two of the Tan Sri's residences located in the capital. The 18-kilometre MEX II Highway project began construction in 2016 and was supposed to be completed in December 2019. It is planned to connect Putrajaya to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Last month, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi was reported to have said the government was working with all stakeholders to resolve the delay in MEX II, which was allegedly stalled due to financial problems. - Bernama
