PTI carries out countrywide protest rallies amid Section 144 in twin cities

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is carrying out protest rallies across the country, amid imposition of Section 144 in twin cities and crackdown of law enforcement agencies on the political public gatherings. The Islamabad and Rawalpindi administrations have imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings and processions in the twin cities. The PTI on its social media platforms has said numerous of its workers, including PTI leader Usman Dar's mother Rehana Dar, were arrested in various parts of the country in a bid to stop them from staging rallies, as the former ruling party is marking the second anniversary of incarceration of PTI founding chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan today, with 'peaceful protests', demanding his release. A day ago, PTI Punjab released a 12-page white paper titled 'Detention of Former Prime Minister Imran Khan: Political Victimisation and Human Rights Abuses (August 2023-August 2025).' Addressing a presser along PTI senior leader Barrister Ali Zafar, Head of the Media Cell for PTI Punjab Shayan Bashir said his party has decided to organise peaceful protests to mark second anniversary of Imran's imprisonment. PTI no longer a political party: Azma 'We have always promoted peace, and our founder, Imran Khan, encourages us to remain peaceful. If Khan's family is not allowed to visit him, we will stage a major protest outside Adiala Jail and continue to protest daily after August 5,' he said. He asserted that some individuals wish to see PTI completely dissolved but it will not happen. Over the past four days, he reported that raids had been conducted on the homes of PTI workers, violating their privacy. 'In Lahore alone, over 200 raids took place in the last two days. The authorities are using brutal tactics, detaining individuals and demanding bribes for their release, and in some cases, asking them to sign affidavits,' he added. Zafar said each case against the PTI founder is based on false accusations. When he spoke with Khan, the former prime minister expressed his commitment to fighting for the rule of law and his faith in the judiciary to deliver justice, he said. Currently, the PTI leader stated, Khan is confined to a 10-foot room, and the authorities do not permit him to meet with his family freely. Recently, even his lawyers have been denied access, and cases have been filed against his wife to apply pressure on him, he maintained. The PTI's dossier outlines a series of issues including political persecution, judicial manipulation, electoral interference, and state-led repression. It claims that Imran Khan has faced over 186 politically motivated FIRs across the country since August 2023. According to the report, convictions in controversial cases, such as the Toshakhana reference, the cipher case, and the Al-Qadir Trust case, were delivered through closed-door trials that were characterised by procedural violations and media blackouts, in blatant defiance of Articles 10-A and 14 of the Constitution. From the party's perspective, the dossier emphasised violations of court orders, human rights abuses, electoral engineering, subversion of democracy, and suppression of peaceful protests. The white paper makes several demands, including the immediate release of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and all political prisoners who are jailed for peaceful expression or association. It also calls for the reversal of all politicied convictions and the initiation of fair retrials overseen by independent benches and international observers. Furthermore, the document demands the formation of an impartial judicial commission to investigate police brutality, forced disappearances, attacks on peaceful protesters, and custodial torture.

Gold plating solution stolen in bangle market heist

Robbers defy 'foolproof' security measures in place for Youm-e-Ali processions, pulling off a daring heist and exposing chinks in law enforcement's armour. PHOTO: EXPRESS Multiple thefts occurred in a single night at Hyderabad's renowned Nishat Glass Bangles Market, where unidentified culprits broke into eight shops, escaping with gold plating solution, raw and finished stock, cash, and other valuables worth estimated to be over Rs2.5 million. The incident came to light early morning when a shopkeeper arrived and found the shutter raised and his shop looted. As others reached the market, it was revealed that eight shops had been targeted. In protest, the traders suspended business operations, closed their shops, and held a demonstration, accusing the perpetrators of having intimate knowledge of the bangles trade and the value of its materials. Among the stolen items was a high-value gold plating solution used in polishing bangles, made from 24-karat gold and stored in delicate three-inch glass bottles. Six such bottles were reported stolen - four from Majid Qureshi's shop and two from Nazim Qureshi's. Victimized shopkeepers included Majid Qureshi, Shah Rukh, Haris Siddiqui, Nazim, Shakeel, and Qasim. Despite the presence of two night guards employed for years at the market and on duty during the incident, the burglars gained entry. According to police sources, some shop locks were broken, while others were accessed by lifting shutters with a jack. Market sources said the area around the bangle market has become a hub for drug addicts, with complaints about drug use and sales during nighttime hours. Traders claimed that despite several written and verbal complaints, the police failed to conduct regular patrols or take preventative action. Following the thefts, the Glass Bangles Dealers Association held an emergency meeting attended by President Yamin Siddiqui, General Secretary Haji Nadeem Siddiqui, Joint Secretary Asghar, and others. It was decided that all shops would remain closed on Sunday in protest. During the demonstration, traders demanded the SSP Hyderabad take immediate notice, apprehend the culprits, and recover the stolen goods. They also urged the government to compensate for their losses and provide permanent security. In a statement posted on social media, association leaders said, "The bangle industry, once considered a cornerstone of Pakistan's economy, is now abandoned. Crushed by heavy taxation, weather damages, and now thefts, traders are being pushed to the wall."

Section 144 imposed in Rawalpindi ahead of PTI protest

Listen to article Authorities in Rawalpindi have imposed Section 144 across the district, banning all public gatherings, motorcycle pillion riding, and rallies from August 4 to August 10, citing security concerns ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) August 5 protest. The Deputy Commissioner's office issued a formal notification on Monday, stating that the restrictions are aimed at maintaining law and order during a sensitive period. According to the notification, 'There will be a complete ban on political gatherings, rallies, and processions in Rawalpindi district. Pillion riding on motorcycles will also be prohibited from August 4 to 10.' The notification also prohibits the display of arms and the use of loudspeakers in public spaces. Any attempt to remove official roadblocks placed on major thoroughfares will result in legal action, officials warned. The administrative clampdown comes amid PTI's continued mobilisation efforts despite ongoing political and legal challenges. The party has not officially announced a rally in Rawalpindi, but authorities appear to be taking preventive measures. It is worth noting that after a series of failed protests, the PTI founder has once again decided to demonstrate street power to campaign for the rule of law and the release of imprisoned party leaders and workers. However, the party appears divided on key policy matters, with dissenting voices increasingly surfacing in public. Days ahead of its planned protest on August 5, the PTI is facing a widespread crackdown, with party leaders going into hiding, workers reporting home raids and several bank accounts reportedly frozen. Party leaders and workers allege that police across Punjab have intensified efforts to suppress the protest by launching a campaign of intimidation. Many party workers lament that since August 1, police have been knocking on doors, forcing workers to sign affidavits promising not to participate in the protest. The raids have led to panic within PTI ranks, with multiple leaders choosing to go underground to avoid arrest. Party sources claim that the "door-knocking" campaign has expanded rapidly over the past few days. In addition to the pressure tactics on the ground, several reports have emerged of financial restrictions being imposed on PTI leadership. The bank account of Hafiz Zeeshan Rasheed, a senior PTI office-bearer in Punjab, has reportedly been frozen, one of many such cases, according to the party.
