The Bay, review: five series in, and the Morecambe-set crime drama still hasn't found a memorable lead

Telegraph02-03-2025
TV detectives usually have miserable personal lives, for some reason. Just look at the ones on screen right now. DCI Jessie James in Unforgotten has a cheating husband. The new Jim Bergerac is grieving for his recently deceased wife. DS Jenn Townsend (Marsha Thomason) in The Bay (ITV1), back for a fifth series, is no different.
Her problems are mundane. Her widowed mum has come to stay and is a bit annoying. Her husband is stressed because he's a deputy head and the Ofsted inspectors are coming (the headteacher greeted this news by announcing that she was going off sick with stress, leaving her deputy to face the music). She probably relishes a knotty murder case, just to distract from her home life.
Mundanity is actually one of the USPs of The Bay. It feels nicely realistic in its little details: police officers complaining about the state of their office, or keeping themselves going by getting a Crunchie from the vending machine. It is also uniformly well-acted, with Leanne Best standing out in this ensemble as the distraught mother of the murder victim, and the plotting is solid.
A student has been found dead and the investigation delves into her family dynamic, her university life and romantic relationship. Everyone is a suspect, and the truth is revealed steadily over the course of six episodes. Daniel Ryan is the real heart of the show as DI Tony Manning, the boss doing the best he can while dealing with the many frustrations of the job.
The female officers in The Bay are all efficient, including newcomer Lou McLaren (Olwen May). Perhaps too efficient: do detectives really turn up at so many suspects' houses alone, and carry out solo arrests? And I have a confession to make about The Bay: even though I've watched previous series, when this one came around I had completely forgotten who the lead character was, other than she was a woman who replaced that other woman whose name I also couldn't remember.
The show has never had a memorable lead, because the writers have never given them any distinguishing features. But the fact it keeps getting recommissioned must mean that viewers are tuning in.

One Night starring Jodie Whittaker comes to ITV1 & ITVX this August

ITV1 & ITVX will broadcast One Night, the six-part mystery drama, exclusively for a UK audience in August. Starring Jodie Whittaker, Nicole da Silva (Wentworth, Rush) and Yael Stone (Orange Is the New Black), One Night is the story of three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one night 20 years ago. Since then, Simone (Nicole da Silva) has harboured secret hopes of becoming a novelist but most of her haphazard attempts have been shoved into her bottom drawer. Now, at the age of 40, she has finally written the one story she could never get out of her mind, and her debut manuscript has become an unexpected overnight success. But it soon becomes apparent that the devastating story the book tells doesn't exclusively belong to her. At the heart of Simone's novel is a tragedy which also happened to Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone), her two childhood best friends. As it becomes harder to prise fact from fiction, one person's memory and story from another's, the book threatens to derail all their friendships, bringing old traumas to the surface of the small coastal community where they grew up, and stirring its perpetrators, who want to make it all go away. Created and written by the award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) and directed by Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) and Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor, The PM's Daughter), the full series will be available on the streaming platform. The ensemble cast includes Kat Stewart (Five Bedrooms, Offspring), George Mason (The Power of the Dog), Erroll Shand (Underbelly: Land of the Long Green Cloud), Noni Hazlehurst (A Place To Call Home, Fires), Tina Bursill (Doctor Doctor), William Zappa (The Dry, Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears), Damien Strouthos (The Twelve) and Jillian Nguyen (Barons). -ENDS- About ITVX Launched in late 2022, ITVX is UK's freshest streaming service, letting viewers stream new programme exclusives, with adverts, for free; ranging from premium dramas, documentaries, US series, comedy and reality shows to blockbuster films and much, much more. One of TV's most popular newcomers returns to Emmerdale in early ITVX release

The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) has returned to Emmerdale. We were first introduced to the teen earlier this year, when an episode of the ITV soap aired that revealed what happened to April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) while she was living on the streets. Dylan was one of the few people who looked out for April while she was homeless. Her time living rough ended when she was found by a member of the public and rushed to hospital. When Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) arrived, they learnt April had given birth to a stillborn baby girl. April then returned to Mill Cottage but because of this, she never got to say a proper goodbye to her friend. Dylan then made his way to the village in search of April a few weeks later. He lived with April for a little while as he attempted to get clean from drugs. However, due to the fact Marlon was very focused on rebuilding his relationship with his daughter, it felt like Dylan was getting in the way. It led him to planting drugs from the vets on Dylan, making it seem as though he had lied to April. Dylan then made a deal with Marlon, which saw him pay for rehab on the condition Dylan would not tell April the truth. During this story, many fans of the ITV soap grew to love Dylan, which meant plenty of them were thrilled to see him tuning into the latest episode. More Trending Dylan had been sneaking about in the village that morning and it didn't take April very long to find him. As they caught up, April smiled as she learnt that Dylan had turned his life around as a result of rehab, and was now living in Hotten. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? She was very pleased but as they parted ways, Dylan made his way to the Cricket Pavilion. He pulled his trouser leg up and attempted to nurse the injury he sustained yesterday, when he was stabbed by Kyle (Huey Quinn) during the barn break-in. The makeshift bed under Dylan confirms that he has lied to April, and sadly hasn't turned his life around. View More » So what's really going on with him? Good Morning Britain's Ed Balls warned to 'move on' after calling co-star 'podgy'

The ITV presenter left fans shocked with his comment. Good Morning Britain host Ed Balls left his co-stars shocked after making a comment about Charlotte Hawkins' weight. ‌ The presenter, 58, has previously sparked controversy over fiery clashes on the ITV daytime programme, however, this time, his fellow GMB stars were left warning him. ‌ As Melvin Odoom wrapped up the showbiz segment on Tuesday morning, Ed and Charlotte were delighted to see an old video of one of her earliest TV appearances. ‌ She'd been in a fashion segment on This Morning and exclaimed, "There's a reason why people don't see that." "Has Charlotte aged well or badly?" Ed asked viewers. He then said, "I think you've aged beautifully, you almost look younger now than then." ‌ "Back then, you were a bit more podgy," he said, gesturing around his face and chin. As Charlotte laughed it off, Melvin warned, "Ed, move on!" "Did Ed really just say Charlotte looked fat when she was younger? Has he looked in the mirror lately? He's so rude," one astounded viewer wrote. Another said: "He'll be up in front of the producers for that quip." Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
