ESPN's Bobby Marks on how much of a trade market there is for LeBron James

For the last 48 hours or so, people across the NBA have been talking about the possibility of LeBron James asking the Los Angeles Lakers to trade him. This speculation started due to the type of language James' agent, Rich Paul, used in a statement he gave ESPN after James exercised his player option for the 2025-26 season. There are quite a few Lakers fans who are thrilled about the prospect of James leaving sooner than later, especially if it yields the team some assets. But working out a trade involving the future Hall of Famer won't be easy, especially since he has a rare no-trade clause in his contract. Advertisement That no-trade clause allows him to veto any potential deals he's involved in. It would be extremely tricky to work something out where L.A. gets enough back from another team while that other team would have enough talent around James to compete for the NBA championship right away. According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, there is another complicating factor. He was asked on "Get Up" if there is a market for James, and he said that there isn't. "You know, to be sensitive to LeBron, who's considered one of the greatest of all time, there isn't, and here's why, Dan," Marks replied. "He's making $53 million, he's in his last year of his contract, he's 40 years old, and I talked to numerous teams yesterday, and asked that same question, would you give up, basically, the farm, and basically you'd have to give up four or five players to go get LeBron James for one year, and the unanimous answer was, no, they wouldn't." James is going into the final year of his contract, and he will make $52.6 million. It is very understandable that another team wouldn't want to give up so many assets for an aging, high-maintenance superstar who, by the way, could leave as a free agent next summer if things don't work out. Haynes: Rich Paul hasn't asked the Lakers to trade LeBron James

LeBron James decided to opt in to the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. Normally, a player opting in to a player option year means he wants to stay with his current team, but there has been lots of speculation that James could ask to be traded, especially since the team now revolves around Luka Doncic. That is because of the type of language Rich Paul, James' agent, used in a statement he gave to ESPN. "LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career. "We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him." But there are some experts who expect James to stay put, at least for now. Chris Haynes, a veteran NBA reporter, said that there have been no trade discussions between James's camp and the Lakers. "He (Paul) told me there has been no trade discussions, there have been no trade talks with the Lakers," Haynes said. "... He clearly opted in, and he wants to win. He believes the Lakers have what it takes to maximize Luka's timeline but also maximize and prioritize his timeline." James' player option for the 2025-26 season will pay him $52.6 million. Once he reports to training camp and the 2025-26 campaign starts, he will be playing in his 23rd NBA season, which will set a new record for the most seasons any player in league history has ever participated in. Rich Paul: LeBron James is focused on enjoying the offseason

Everyone seems to be talking about the possibility of LeBron James asking the Los Angeles Lakers to trade him sometime in the near future. Rich Paul, his agent, issued a statement on June 29 that many have interpreted as a prelude to a trade request, but Paul reportedly hasn't had any discussions with the Lakers about trading James. It seems very likely, when one thinks rationally about the entire situation, that James will still be a member of the Lakers when training camp starts. Perhaps neither he nor Paul will say anything of substance about James' situation with the team for the rest of the summer. Advertisement In the meantime, Paul appeared on SiriusXM NBA Radio and said that James should simply enjoy his summer, even as various people who cover the NBA speculate about the superstar's immediate future. 'There's so many voices in today's game and around today's game in media and stuff like that, and everyone has a job to do. For us, let those people do their job, it's not for us to rebuttal or try to give clarity on what's said, what's not said. That's not the focus. The focus is, hey man, enjoy your summer… You can't dispel everything someone has to say and you've been around this thing a lot time, there's never been an expectation on anyone like it's been on him. But my thing is just continue to find your joy. You can't go out here and try to prove everyone wrong or try to align with or make sure everyone is right. The critique is gonna be the critique, and this is for all players, by the way. I think everyone's journey is a lot different.' Even if James comes out and explicitly asks the Lakers to trade him, working something out that would land him on a team that has enough talent left over to compete for the NBA championship while satisfying both teams in terms of the trade parameters would be very difficult. Plus, since James is now on an expiring contract, one has to wonder how much another team would be willing to give up assets for what could be a one-year rental. ESPN's Bobby Marks said recently that there is no trade market for the 40-year-old. On the other hand, a few teams, including the Golden State Warriors, considered making an offer for him, and in fact, Paul was reportedly contacted by multiple teams that were interested in the future Hall of Famer.
