Morocco, Nigeria Explore Ways of Boosting Economic Ties

Maroc09-05-2025
In a bid to bolster economic ties between Morocco and Nigeria and to strengthen cooperation in employment and training, Morocco's ambassador to Nigeria, Moha Ou Ali Tagma, held talks, on Wednesday in Abuja, with the country's Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
This meeting, held in anticipation of the Nigerian Minister's incoming visit to Morocco, at the invitation of Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment and Skills, Younes Sekkouri, provided an opportunity to review the positive momentum of bilateral ties, which were given considerable impetus since the visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Nigeria in December 2016.
This meeting also provided a platform to delve into the remarkable cooperation in several fields, mainly energy, with catalytic projects for regional integration such as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, as well as to explore ways of exchanging experiences in youth training and employability.
Speaking to MAP, Onyejeocha underscored the importance of exploring collaboration avenues between Nigeria and Morocco in training and skills development, to provide the youth with opportunities for better professional integration.
She also called for the usage of digital platforms in order to set up appropriate training programs to boost the employability of young people and contribute to economic development.

Morocco emerges as key Islamic finance hub, says IFSB Secretary General

Morocco has established itself as a regional financial hub thanks to its strategic position between Africa and Europe, and it represents a key lever for the development of Islamic finance, said Ghiath Shabsigh, Secretary General of the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB). «We are impressed by the progress made, both in terms of regulatory frameworks and the facilitation of dialogue around Sharia-related issues, particularly how these principles are translated into practical operational mechanisms», Shabsigh told MAP in an interview on the sidelines of the 23rd Islamic Financial Stability Forum, recently held in Rabat. He emphasized that financial education is also a fundamental pillar for the growth of participatory finance, noting that these efforts are part of a strategic plan led by Bank Al-Maghrib to support the sector's expansion and build a robust, trustworthy, and sustainable financial system. While Islamic finance is relatively new in Morocco, Shabsigh observed that it is developing rapidly, as evidenced by key indicators—thanks in large part to the introduction of an adapted legal and regulatory framework. «This framework covers the banking, insurance, and capital markets sectors, marking a major step in supporting the growth of Islamic finance in the Kingdom», he explained, adding that such supervision ensures the safe, sound, and structured development of the sector. He also affirmed that, within this dynamic, Morocco has significant potential to strengthen its role in the Islamic finance industry, both regionally and internationally. «Morocco's initiatives to develop its capital markets are particularly noteworthy, especially the introduction of sovereign sukuk», he said. In this regard, he recommended building a strong foundation by establishing a dynamic and well-structured domestic sukuk market in dirhams. «Once this base is in place, issuing sukuk in foreign currencies becomes much more feasible, with better financing conditions and greater credibility among international investors», he concluded. Founded in 2003 and based in Kuala Lumpur, the IFSB is an international organization dedicated to promoting the soundness and stability of the Islamic financial services industry.

Vueling Launches New Direct Flight Between Essaouira and Barcelona

Rabat– Essaouira International Airport welcomed a Vueling Airlines flight from Barcelona on Thursday, marking the inauguration of a brand-new air route connecting the Catalan capital with Morocco's windy city. To celebrate the occasion, airport authorities hosted a ceremony attended by tourism officials, industry operators, and representatives of the Spanish airline, showcasing the growing international appeal of Essaouira as a travel destination. Speaking to MAP, Abdelmounaim Aoutoul, director of Essaouira-Mogador International Airport, hailed the launch of the twice-weekly service as a milestone for the city's air connectivity. 'This new route is a significant addition to our flight offering, reflecting the airport's sustained growth over recent years,' he noted. Passenger traffic at the airport increased by over 28% during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year, Aoutoul added. Essaouira is currently connected to about ten international destinations, mostly in Europe, alongside a domestic service to Rabat. He also revealed plans to expand connectivity further this summer, with new flights to Nantes in France and Seville in Spain expected to begin in the coming months. Redouane Khane, president of the Provincial Tourism Council, said the direct link with Barcelona is set to inject fresh momentum into Essaouira's tourism sector. 'This new service makes it easier for visitors from Spain and other European markets connected through Barcelona to reach Essaouira directly,' he explained, highlighting the role of the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and other partners in supporting efforts to strengthen the city's visibility and accessibility abroad. Passengers arriving on the inaugural flight expressed their satisfaction with how much time the convenient route saves, calling it a welcome alternative to longer and more complicated travel itineraries. The launch of this route is part of a broader strategy to enhance access to Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed city whose global reputation as a cultural and tourist hub continues to grow. In 2024, Essaouira welcomed a record of over one million tourists, marking exceptional growth that transformed the city from a seasonal destination into a year-round attraction.

Morocco's National AI Conference highlights urgent need for training

Training public and private sector actors in artificial intelligence (AI) tools is essential to fully harness the potential of these emerging technologies, ministers said on Tuesday in Salé during the opening plenary of the National AI Conference. As AI becomes a key driver of competitiveness, training has become a critical requirement for turning this opportunity into a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive growth, the speakers emphasized. Mohamed Saad Berrada, Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, underscored the importance of mastering AI tools to improve educational system management and tackle pressing challenges, particularly in processing data related to students and teachers. He cited AI's potential to personalize curricula, support continuous teacher training, enhance language learning, and help reduce absenteeism and dropout rates. Younes Sekkouri, Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills, stressed that AI is a transformative force for the job market. In light of this shift, he said the government's role is to integrate AI within a tailored legal and regulatory framework that unlocks the full potential of society. Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, highlighted the vital link between energy and AI: «Without energy, there are no servers, no data centers, and no AI», she said. Benali noted that Morocco plans to double its capacity for producing non-conventional energy in under five years—a leap equivalent to the progress made over the past three decades. Chakib Alj, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), pointed to the urgent need to effectively implement Morocco's national AI strategy. He emphasized the private sector's need for skilled engineers and digital talent, praising the 1337 coding school as a successful model for training tech-savvy youth—a model, he suggested, that should be scaled up to meet evolving market demands.
