Oman Opens Visa, Medical Centre In Manila To Streamline Labour Recruitment

Gulf Insider4 days ago
The Sultanate of Oman has inaugurated a visa and medical examination centre in Manila, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline and regulate work visa procedures as well as to ensure greater protection for both workers and employers, according to a statement from Oman's Foreign Ministry.
The centre, which was opened under the patronage of Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi, Foreign Minister, and Dr Mahad bin Said bin Ali Baowain, Minister of Labour, will facilitate and regulate the issuance of work visas based on employment contracts officially approved under Omani labour law.
It is designed to serve as a comprehensive, one-stop facility for Filipino workers seeking employment in Oman, offering biometric registration, medical screening, employment contract attestation, and other pre-departure services.
In addition to processing applications, the centre houses a dedicated information desk and conducts orientation sessions to educate prospective workers on their rights and responsibilities. These measures are intended to support a smoother transition for workers and ensure that both employees and employers are fully informed before placement.
The Manila centre is the first of several similar facilities Oman plans to open in key labour-exporting nations. Authorities said the expansion is part of a long-term strategy to ensure lawful and ethical hiring practices while aligning with international labour standards. The initiative underscores Oman's broader vision of providing secure, high-quality public services and enhancing the credibility and sustainability of its labour market.

Philippine President Marcos to visit US

Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos will visit the United States from July 20 to 22, Manila's department of foreign affairs said Friday, after the country was hit with trade tariffs of 20 percent imposed by Washington. "We are working with the U.S. State Department to finalize the details of the visit," the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. Jose Manuel Romualdez, the Philippine ambassador to the United States, told AFP Friday that Marcos is set to meet with US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to discuss "defense and economic ties". Manila and Washington have deepened their cooperation since Marcos took office in 2022 and began pushing back on Beijing's South China Sea claims. Bound by a 1951 mutual defence treaty, the two allies conduct frequent maritime exercises in the disputed waterway with Washington warning that it is committed to defend the Philippines if Filipino forces or vessels come under attack. It will be the first official visit of Marcos to the United States since Trump took office.

Oman Labour Ministry: Visa Renewal Grace Period Ends On July 31 — Final Call To Avoid Fines

The Ministry of Labour has issued a final reminder to all individuals, employers, and workers that the grace period for rectifying legal employment status — including labour card (visa) renewals without fines — will end on July 31, 2025. The ministry has urged all concerned parties to make use of the ongoing exemption and waiver package, warning that no applications will be accepted after the deadline. 'The Ministry of Labour reminds all individuals, employers, and workers that the grace period for rectifying legal status will end on 31 July 2025. No applications submitted after this date will be considered,' the alert stated. This final reminder follows a January announcement, when the Omani Cabinet approved a comprehensive waiver initiative valued at up to 60 million Omani rials ($156 million). The initiative aims to improve workforce regulation, protect the rights of workers and employers, and support a more efficient labour market. Cancellation of fines and dues for expired labour cards inactive for over seven years. Exemption from paying repatriation costs (airfare) for workers who left Oman before 2018. Cancellation of labour cards unused for over 10 years, provided there were no related service requests. Waivers for liquidated companies if workers are repatriated or their services transferred. Six-month grace period (February 1–July 31, 2025) to regularise worker status and avoid fines, subject to: Labour card renewal and fee payment for the next two years. Cancellation of absconding (work abandonment) reports. Transfer of services or payment of repatriation costs. Applications will only be accepted between February 1 and July 31, 2025 through the Ministry's website and approved service channels. Oman's expatriate workforce continues to be led by nationals from Bangladesh (622,078), India (507,956), and Pakistan (314,997). Together, they represent over 80% of the country's expat labour force.
