The South American restaurant just crowned best in the world for 2025

Time Out20-06-2025
A couple of weeks after announcing their annual list of the world's 51-100 best restaurants, the much-anticipated guide to the best of the best has landed.
World's 50 Best announced their winners at a ceremony in Turin last night, and Maido, a restaurant in Lima, Peru, was named the best restaurant on the planet.
It's the 23rd edition of the awards, and restaurants from 32 cities across 22 different countries made the ranking, including 10 new entries. So, what's Maido doing that makes it better than all those brilliant spots?
The restaurant takes its name from a Japanese phrase used by people to greet each other: 'maido', and is run by chef Mitsuharu 'Micha' Tsumura, the son of Japanese immigrants who formally trained in the US.
Recommended: These are the best cities in the world for food, according to Time Out.
He then spent time in Osaka mastering the techniques now utilised at this place, and it's resulted in a dazzling blend of Peruvian Amazon flavours cooked with Japanese methods. Think a miniature jaune parcel of pork jowl and palm heart, or yucca served up with Amazonian beans.
'I can't describe it in words really. It's a mix of feelings… All the hard work, all the difficult moments, making people understand what we were doing, and now seeing what we've done with Nikkei cuisine and Peruvian cuisine… with hospitality. Making people happy has always been what I've loved doing,' said Tsumura, after the win.
'I think the most beautiful act of love is to cook for somebody. It's the most beautiful thing that has happened in my life. It's been 11 years [being ranked on The World's 50 Best Restaurants] and it's a dream come true.'
Three other restaurants in Lima made the World's 50 Best list – Kjolle, Mérito and Mayta. Read on for all of the outstanding inclusions for 2025.

Katy Perry tearfully thanks fans at Australia concert

"Thank you for always being there for me, Australia; it means the world," a teary-eyed Perry told the crowd as her 4-year-old daughter Daisy Dove's vocals on her "143" album-closing track "Wonder" rang out in the arena. She shook off the emotion and said, "Now let's sing 'Firework!'" The 40-year-old is almost a third of the way through her 2025 Lifetimes World Tour, which launched in late April and heads back to North America in mid-July to weave around the West Coast and Canada. Katy Perry's essentials: Shows fueled by espresso, a 'California crunchy' diet, meditating Perry's tour schedule overlapped with the highly anticipated - and controversially luxe - wedding between Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez. Over the weekend, Perry's fiancee, Orlando Bloom, flew solo as he attended various pre-wedding festivities. Bloom was just one of the A-listers in a star-studded list of guests that included Sydney Sweeney, Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, and Tom Brady. She and Bloom started dating in 2016, briefly split in 2017 and got engaged in February 2019. Daisy Dove Bloom was born in August 2020. Orlando Bloom posts about new beginnings, taking 'that first step' After the lavish wedding weekend, Bloom posted some inspirational quotes on his Instagram Story on June 30. In the first slide, he re-posted a translated quote from the Buddha that read, "Each day is a new beginning. What we do today is what matters most." In a following post, Bloom typed up a "daily encouragement by Daisaku Ikeda," a prominent Japanese religious figure and Buddhist, who died at age 95 in 2023, whom Bloom has long admired. "The important thing is to take that first step. Bravely overcoming one small fear gives you the courage to take on the next," Bloom wrote in his Story.

Newcastle remove scene from kit launch video and apologise for offence

Newcastle United have removed a scene from the launch video of their new third kit, apologising for any offence it caused. The new blue kit with orange trim was revealed on Monday, launched with a video featuring Magpies fan and pop star Sam Fender. The video was taken down, though, and reposted with a scene removed as it could have caused offence. The original video featured a scene which showed a flag resembling the Rising Sun flag which was flown by Japanese armed forces during WWII. A spokesperson for Newcastle told the Northern Echo: 'We have been alerted to the appearance of a flag in our recent third kit launch video that could inadvertently cause offence. 'In response, we immediately removed the video from circulation and have taken steps to edit the visual from all future content. 'We sincerely apologise for any offence caused. A further statement after the video was reposted read: 'The reaction to our new third kit with adidas has been special, but the launch video contained a scene that could inadvertently cause offence. We apologise for that. 'We've removed the scene from the film to make sure that as many fans as possible can enjoy it.' The rising sun flag is a red circle on a white background – like the current Japanese flag – but with 16 red lines emerging from the central circle. It was previously used as the flag of the Japanese military during a time when Japan occupied other Asian nations. It was then associated with the Japanese navy during WWII when Japan's troops spread across Asia, committing atrocities in the process. Other Asian countries – notably South Korea – see the rising sun flag as a representation of war crimes and atrocities that Japan committed in the past. The new third kit will be worn for the first time against Celtic on July 19, with the club talking up the 'modern tribute to the iconic 97/98 third kit.' More Trending Peter Silverstone, the club's Chief Commercial Officer said: 'This third kit is a powerful blend of past and present – a bold design that reflects both our proud history and the exciting journey ahead. Working closely with adidas, we've created something that we hope will resonate deeply with our global supporters, bringing back an iconic look with a modern twist. 'There's a real pride in wearing the trefoil – a symbol that connects generations of fans and players. Our passionate global fanbase will see this and wear it with pride, especially as we return to the UEFA Champions League for the second time in three years. 'Just as importantly, every adult shirt sold direct from the club contributes directly to our Foundation's work across the North East, reinforcing our commitment to community impact on and off the pitch.' At one point in the video two fans can be seen holding up an altered flag that resembles the Rising Sun Flag, a former symbol of the Imperial Japanese Army.
