IT cos set to hire more freshers during FY26
Industry experts are of the opinion that such uptick is driven more by low hiring in past years than any significant uptick in the demand environment. They also said that offer letters given to the freshers during campus placement should be turned into appointment letters in a specified time frame.
'What has happened that hiring of freshers has seen an uptick because of low hiring in last two years. We also know that giving an offer and converting that into appointment letter are two different things. The situation is very dynamic because clients of IT firms are giving mandate for short-term projects. When long-term projects fall, it directly affects fresher hiring,' said Aditya Narayan Mishra, CEO of CIEL HR Services.
'Fresher hiring usually happens taking into account the long-term deal pipeline of an IT firm. It is basically about getting the supply right considering the future. They don't bring revenue immediately,' he added.
Last month, management of big and mid-tier IT services companies has indicated that hiring of freshers will continue in FY26 amid an uncertain demand environment.
India's largest IT firm, TCS has said that it would hire more number of freshers than it recruited last year. The company hired around 42,000 fresh engineering graduates last fiscal.
'We will hire slightly higher number of freshers (from campuses) in FY26 as compared toFY25. The hiring number each quarter will depend on the demand environment,' said Milind Lakkad, Chief HR Officer, TCS.
Similarly, Infosys is planning to hire more than 20,000 freshers in FY26, while HCLTech is expected to hire around 10,000 engineering graduates from campuses in the current financial year.
Among mid-tier firm, L&T Technology Services will recruit around 2,500 freshers in FY26.
While many firms have given fresher hiring target for ongoing fiscal, some have not done so on the back of uncertain demand environment. Companies like Wipro, Tech Mahindra have said that they would hire freshers as per the demand environment.
Meanwhile, experts opined that undue delay in giving appointment dates should be avoided by all IT firms. Recently, companies like Infosys had fired freshers undergoing training saying that these interns were not able to clear various stages of the training programme. 'Freshers are expected to be good in new technologies because companies have increased the benchmark for final absorption,' said an industry source.

Sukoon and Shukoor: Bhendi Bazaar's revival pushes forward
MUMBAI: In the heart of Bhendi Bazaar, where narrow, dimly lit alleys service one of the oldest parts of the inner-city, residents now speak a different language: one of sukoon (peace) and shukoor (gratitude). These two words capture the transformation unfolding in Dawoodi Bohra Mohalla, a place once synonymous with crumbling buildings, encroached streets, and shared toilets. (Anshuman Poyrekar/ HT Photo) By the end of 2025, over 1,280 families will move into Al Ezz – 53-storey twin towers that occupy 1.34 acres and whose name means 'honour' in Arabic. A mixed-use development, the towers will also house 260 shops, and will replace 23 dilapidated buildings from the old Bhendi Bazaar. Al Ezz is one of six multi-storey towers being built as part of one of India's largest urban renewal projects. Covering 16.5 acres, the cluster redevelopment project is helmed by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT). Launched in 2009, it will eventually rehouse 3,200 families and 1,250 shops, once housed in 250 dilapidated buildings. Moving into Al Ezz will be a life-changing event for Tasneem Rajkotwala, who recalls her earlier life in a 150-sq ft home with a shared toilet. 'We're so happy to finally have flats on ownership, a space that's ours. There's so much sukoon, and we're filled with shukoor for our Syedna, who gave us this better life.' Rajkotwala's new home is a 375-sqft, one-bedroom apartment with a private bathroom. She will have access to elevators, round-the-clock water supply, and a garbage chute to segregate dry and west waste on every floor. The contrast with her past life is striking. 'Earlier, we had no privacy. There was no proper garbage disposal, no parking space, and water had to be filled early in the morning.' Initiated in 2009 by the late Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, the SBUT project is revolutionary not only due to its scale but also because it preserves the culture and social ethos of the old settlement, giving its identity new expression in a modern avatar. Built into this blueprint are community spaces, once cramped and overrun, that have been restored. The local mosque, previously too small for gatherings, now comfortably hosts prayers in a large and serene environment in the Raudat Tahera. Like the rest of the project, Al Ezz is not just rehousing its residents, it's rebuilding lives. 'It's a blueprint for how Indian cities can modernise without erasing identity,' said the SBUT spokesperson. In Al Ezz, alongside residential units, are three floors housing commercial units. Already operational, they have ensured that businesses continue without displacement. A temporary commercial transit hub was constructed to support shopkeepers during the shift. Nafisa Kanchwala says her family has been living in Bohri Mohalla for around a century. 'Ours was a one-room, 350-sq ft home but now we are getting a 1 BHK with a private toilet. We look forward to living in an environment that promises good ventilation and great amenities.' The redevelopment goes beyond aesthetics. The project is built on principles of sustainability, safety and smart urban planning, boasting solar rooftop panels, rainwater harvesting, and a sewage treatment plant for responsible water use and disposal. Garbage chutes on every floor enable waste segregation at source. Wide 18-metre roads replace former 7-metre lanes, now complete with pedestrian footpaths and streetlights. Over 700 native trees are being planted to improve air quality and restore green cover. Open spaces, a children's play area, landscaped gardens, and seating areas designed to foster community interaction, a rare luxury in the former congested quarters, have enhanced the quality of life for residents. Bhendi Bazaar's identity has always been closely tied to its commercial life, from antique stores to beloved eateries like Jilani's and Shabbir's Tawakkal Sweets. Rather than displace these icons, SBUT has woven them into the new landscape, blending modern commercial hubs with old-world charm. The SBUT project comprises six towers. While two towers, in Phase I, have been occupied, two others including Al Ezz, in Phase II, are approaching completion. The last two will be complete in 2027. Even during construction, community life is not compromised. 'More than 950 residential transit units were built at Anjeerwadi, with another 1,100 provided by MHADA, ensuring that families were moved into safe, temporary housing,' said the SBUT spokesperson. Says Rajkotwala, 'We are at peace even in our transit homes. It's already better than the homes we left behind.'

238 AC locals, automatic closed door non-AC coaches, new terminuses
MUMBAI: Two years after tenders to procure air-conditioned (AC) locals were floated and quickly withdrawn (the railways could not furnish cogent reasons for it), the Indian Railways (IR) cleared the decks to procure 238 AC local trains. On Monday, the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Railway Board, Satish Kumar, held a series of meetings with officials from the central railways (CR) and western railways (WR) to chalk out the modalities of the way forward. AC locals for Mumbai The need for more AC local trains in Mumbai's suburban network has been gaining traction over a period of time, as it facilitates ease of travel. Elucidating about the present move, Kumar said, 'We are planning 238 12-car AC local trains. We have ironed out all the challenges (regarding the tendering process) and will soon call for tenders.' CR presently operates 80 services ferrying an average of 79,000 commuters daily while WR runs 109 services that cater to 1.25 lakh commuters on an average daily. The move to acquire the AC locals comes on the back of a promise made by union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier this year. It was stuck purportedly following protests by passenger groups against exorbitant ticket pricing. The project falls under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). According to the plan, MUTP-3 aims to procure 47 AC local trains at an estimated cost of ₹3,491 crore, while MUTP-3A envisions 191 trains at ₹15,802 crore. In June 2023, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) floated global tenders for the project but the decision was deferred, leaving the procurement in limbo. Meanwhile, Kumar said, automatic closed door non-AC trains will be operational by the end of 2025. The prototype is being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, and after its success is ascertained, it will be expanded to the rest of the fleet. A CR official told HT that a similar prototype stands in the Kurla car shed, which is also an option. The railways will also augment the present 12-car trains to 15-car ones in order to accommodate more commuters. Integrating suburban and metro trains In Monday's meeting, the need for multi-modal integration (MMI) was also discussed, in which authorities discussed Khar and Ghatkopar stations. In Khar, for instance, an additional 5000 square meter area has been created through an elevated deck above the platforms where shops and other commercial hubs will be created. Kumar discussed similar large spaces at all railway stations which will merge with respective upcoming metro lines. 'We will carry out a detailed survey of the railway stations where integration with metro rail lines is required. This has already been implemented in a few stations – for instance, at Ghatkopar work on two concourses (to create more entry and exit points between the metro and railway station) are underway, with one being recently completed. Work on the remaining two can be carried out only at night because of passenger movement through the day,' said Kumar. The survey is likely to include a study of passenger footfall, travel pattern, among other factors. The MMI facilities are implemented within a 500-metre radius of each metro station. More rail terminuses in MMR Bearing in mind the 2027 Kumbh Mela in Nashik, IR is planning to roll out extra trains and enhance railway infrastructure. Kumbh preparedness will cost IR ₹1100 crore, most of it going to redevelop Nashik station and others around it. 'We have to run more trains, for which it is important to improve rail infra,' added Kumar. On Monday, rail authorities also highlighted the various stages of progress of new rail terminuses across Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Kumar charted out the requirement of mega rail terminuses at Jogeshwari, Panvel, Kalyan and Vasai, apart from upgrading the existing ones such as CSMT which is being redeveloped at the cost of ₹2500 crore. When questioned about the delay in the pace of work, Kumar pointed out that 'ongoing works are being carried out at stations and not a greenfield, for which railways have to ensure rail traffic is not disturbed, which makes it challenging'. Kumar added that the work at CSMT will be speeded up.

The Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment, the MEA said in a late-evening statement. 'Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals,' it added. 'In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' the MEA said. It said India has been 'targeted' by the US and the EU for importing oil from Russia after the commencement of the Ukraine conflict. In fact, India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict, it said. 'The US at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability,' the MEA said, adding India's imports are meant to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs to the Indian consumers. 'They are a necessity compelled by global market situation. However, it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia,' it said. The MEA noted that the European Union in 2024 had a bilateral trade of Euro 67.5 billion in goods with Russia. 'In addition, it had trade in services estimated at Euro 17.2 billion in 2023. This is significantly more than India's total trade with Russia that year or subsequently. 'European imports of LNG in 2024, in fact, reached a record 16.5mn tonnes, surpassing the last record of 15.21mn tonnes in 2022,' it added. US will substantially raise tariffs on India: Donald Trump Earlier, US President Trump said his administration will substantially raise tariffs on India. 'India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits,' he said in a social media post. 'They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,' he said.
