Palou wins seventh of season at IndyCar Farm to Finish 275
"It has been an unbelievable day, unbelievable weekend but more than anything an incredible year for us," Palou said.
"I cannot really believe it, honestly, and winning here is super special. I struggled on short ovals for so long. Super happy. Another win. Seven wins in one year. It's insane."
It was only his second career oval triumph after winning at Indy in May.
The event completed a double-header weekend in Newton, Iowa, with race one going to Mexico's Pato O'Ward on Saturday.
New Zealand's Dixon finished second on Sunday followed by compatriot Marcus Armstrong, who matched his best career IndyCar finish, then American David Malukas and O'Ward.
It was Dixon's 14th top-five finish at Iowa without a victory.
"We weren't too sure how it was going to go," Dixon said. "Everybody did a great job to basically throw the kitchen sink at it."
Palou, with 515 season points, boosted his lead over O'Ward from 105 to 129 points with Dixon 173 adrift in third after 12 races as the Spaniard tries to capture a fourth crown in five campaigns.
American Josef Newgarden, Saturday's runner-up and is a six-time race winner at Iowa, finished 10th after twice pitting with the lead only to have a caution flag moments later send him to the back of the lead lap.
Palou grabbed the lead at the start but Newgarden overtook him and seized first place on lap 66.
Newgarden went into the pits on lap 130 for fuel but moments later Sweden's Marcus Ericsson crashed in turn four, allowing rivals to make pit stops under caution as Newgarden cycled back.
Palou returned to the track in the lead with Malukas second and O'Ward third at the restart with Newgarden 11th.
Fast-charging Newgarden clawed his way back, passing Malukas with 40 laps remaining and overtaking Palou five laps later to reclaim the lead.
Newgarden then pitted to refuel just as American Colton Herta crashed to bring out a caution flag with Palou pitting and staying in the lead and Newgarden fading to ninth.
The next IndyCar race will be next Sunday at Toronto.

Flag football federation 'hopes' US teams have reserve places at LA Olympics
Trochet, speakFlag football will make its Olympic bow at ting to AFP on Monday on the sidelines of an official visit three years ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics, said the federation was in discussions with the International Olympic committee on the qualifying path for six men's and six women's teams. "We will have the official version of the qualification program by the end of the year," he said. "We are already anticipating a scenario where the world's best might face a first stage of qualification in 2026. "After that, a mix with the best continental teams in 2027 could yeild a second group of qualified teams. We have quite a clear and precise idea of what we will propose." The fledgling Olympic sport -- a non-tackle version of the immensely popular gridioron game -- received a boost when the NFL gave the green light for its players to participate, and Trochet said the federation hoped they would be granted entry to the tournament as hosts. "Our board has made this proposal, and we hope it will be favorably received by those who need to approve our qualification pathway," he said. Trochet said the federation has also been working on flag football's place in the Olympic schedule, saying they had secured a "prime time" slot with a men's final on Friday, July 21, that "links culturally to the tradition of university games on Friday nights. "The women's final will have its own moment on Saturday evening at the heart of an important day, all at the end of the first week of the Games," Trochet added. Elsewhere the federation is focusing on the growth of the sport worldwide. "A few weeks ago, we concluded the first African Championship in Cairo, Egypt," he said. "Throughout the summer we will transition to the European Championships in Paris, the Americas Championship in Panama and then the Asia-Oceania Championships in China in October." Trochet said efforts to bolster the sport in the United States are somewhat different, but along with the NFL the federation is working to support youth flag football, train coaches and train and certify officials. "In the United States, flag football is experiencing phenomenal growth," he said, adding that the federation was working with the NFL to have flag football, long considered a recreational pursuit, recognized as a competitive collegiate sport in the United States. "Our ambition is to move faster than the 10 years usually required for this process," he said.

Club World Cup final scuffle 'should have been avoided' says Luis Enrique
Television footage showed the PSG boss raising his arm to the neck of Joao Pedro, who had earlier scored Chelsea's third goal following a Cole Palmer brace at the MetLife Stadium. "There was pushing and shoving, a lot of tension and pressure. The situation obviously should have been avoided," Luis Enrique told reporters. "My intention was clearly to just try to separate the players." He admitted that Chelsea were deserved winners as he urged his team to enjoy a short summer break at the end of a remarkable campaign. Defeat for PSG denied them what would have been a stunning clean sweep of trophies as they failed to add the Club World Cup to the UEFA Champions League and French league and cup double they claimed in May. "I think over the course of the game they deserved their win. They played very well," Luis Enrique said. "I said beforehand that Chelsea were a very good team and they deserve their victory and the trophy." A historic season for PSG ends after 11 months and 65 matches, and they now have exactly one month before returning to action in August -- there will be another trophy on the line in their next game, against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup. "I think is important for us to enjoy our holidays. They will be very short. But we need to make the most of them," he said. PSG's victory in this year's Champions League also means they will have another crack at winning the Club World Cup when they participate in the next edition, which is due to take place in 2029. "I think this tournament was born out of the need to know who the best team in the world is. I think it is an interesting format and I think it could become a real top-level competition," said the Spaniard. "There is just the difficulty of finding space for it in the current calendar, but I think it is an interesting tournament -- we had the chance to win it but there was another team who were better than us in the final."

Rookie Mouw rallies to win first PGA Tour title in Kentucky
Mouw started the final round seven shots off the pace, but eight birdies in the first 13 holes at Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville saw him power to the top of the leaderboard. He walked off the 18th with a 10-under par total of 270 but had to wait two hours to see if his three-shot lead would hold up. "I did all I can out there and played really good golf and left it all out there," Mouw said. "I guess I broke the course record, too, which is cool." Paul Peterson, the 37-year-old tour rookie who led by one after completion of the weather-disrupted third round on Sunday morning, made it an anxious wait. Peterson bounced back from two early bogeys with three birdies on the back nine. He pulled within one stroke with a 31-foot birdie at 16 but could get no closer. "It's tough to come up short," Peterson said. "But I played some good golf this week. I'm proud of what I did." Having started the round so far back, Mouw said he wasn't thinking too much about his position until a fan informed at the 12th that he was in the lead. "Knowing you're in the lead on 12 and having seven holes to play and playing very, very good golf coming in is definitely the best round I played," said Mouw, who added his final birdie at the 17th. Mouw's previous best finish was a tie for sixth at the Puerto Rico Open in March. The Californian had gained dubious fame in January when he posted an octuple bogey 13 during the second round of the American Express, earning kudos for his ability to laugh at the disaster. On Sunday, his first win had him fighting back tears. © 2025 AFP
