Weather halts search for missing boater in Georgetown County; deputies say crews will resume looking on Friday

Yahoo29-05-2025
PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WBTW) — Authorities plan to resume searching Friday for a Waccamaw River boater who disappeared 10 days ago after leaving The Reserve Marina in Pawleys Island, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said.
Kerry Van Arsdel of Indiana left the Georgetown County marina on May 19, and employees found his unmanned vessel — a 41-foot blue and white sailboat named Harmony — several days later near Butler Island, miles away from the docks.
The sheriff's office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources halted their search Thursday afternoon after bad weather forced crews back to the shore, but they plan to begin looking again on Friday
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 843-546-5102.

2.4 magnitude earthquake recorded in South Carolina Lowcountry

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A small earthquake was reported Wednesday morning in the Lowcountry, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. The 2.4 magnitude earthquake happened at 9:57 a.m. about 1.2 miles west of Sangaree in Berkeley County, the USGS said. Small earthquakes are frequent in the Lowcountry and Midland areas of the state. There was a 2.3 magnitude quake in April near the town of Elgin in Kershaw County. A 2.2 magnitude tremor was recorded in March 2024 in Richland County. Prior to that, in August 2022, the USGS issued a rare earthquake advisory for the state, saying a swarm of quakes had 'produced a fairly constant trickle of earthquakes since December 2021.' One of those, a 3.6 magnitude tremor, hit just northeast of Columbia on June 29. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. He joined the team in May 2021. Uncovering the truth of Billy the Kid; New Mexico Strange

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The name 'Billy the Kid' is something New Mexico is known for all throughout the world. But are all the stories true, or have the facts turned into tall tales over the years? On this week's New Mexico Strange episode, News 13 Host and Anchor Chad Brummett sat down with New Mexico State Historian Rob Martinez to dive further into the legend of Billy the Kid. According to Martinez, the truth behind Billy the Kid is messier than most think. 'What we don't know about Billy the Kid probably outweighs what we know,' said the historian. In the episode, Martinez covered some of the myths sparked over time, and provided a brief known history of the infamous outlaw: Matinez explained that Billy the Kid was supposedly born as Henry McCarty in 1859 in New York City. His father died when he was young, and the family – McCarty, his mom, and his brother – eventually moved westward. In 1873, his mom remarried in Santa Fe, but she passed away shortly after, leaving the boys orphaned. Early on, McCarty began living a life of crime, stealing and drinking at a young age. Known for his involvement in the Jesse Evans gang and the 'Regulators,' McCarty escaped from numerous jails and killed approximately nine people – four directly and an estimated five during group shootouts. An arrest warrant was issued for McCarty's role in the death of Sheriff William Brady, and he was sentenced to death by hanging, set for May 1881. McCarty escaped one last time but was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett just months later, on July 14. Throughout his time in the West, Henry went by the names of Kid, Henry, and Billy Antrim, as well as Billy Bonney. This episode uncovers the truths and myths behind one of New Mexico's most famous names. To see the state records center's full background on Billy the Kid, click here.
