Imperfect Cooking
Episode 9 of Tastefully Yours begins with Yeon-joo heartbroken over Beom-woo's betrayal. Elsewhere, Chairman Han and the rest of Hansang celebrate Motto's three Diamant stars. A TV producer named Kim approaches Chairman Han, proposing a documentary. But she refuses.
At Jungjae, Myung-sook and Chun-seung arrive at work as usual but soon realise something is wrong with Yeon-joo's mood. She tells them it will just be the three of them now but doesn't explain further. However, when her concentration wavers throughout the day, she finally tells them the truth about Beom-woo.
Meanwhile, Beom-woo, who is pretty upset himself, goes to Motto. He packs up his things and apologises to Yu-jin and Young-hye, who are pretty confused at his behaviour. He then hands in his resignation. Chairman Han sees the message and then tells Sun-woo that he will be taking over Motto now. His own restaurant, La Lecel, will be shut down.
Elsewhere, the Frenchman who had visited Jungjae along with his daughter and her fiancé's family in the early episodes is revealed to be working for Diamant. He calls the company and asks them to add one more restaurant with three stars in Korea.
Yeon-joo closes the restaurant and goes to the Buddhist monastery. She sees her mother, the head monk, and breaks down in her arms. Afterwards, when a small child at the monastery throws a fit, Yeon-joo cooks a makeshift cake for her out of the available ingredients. The little girl loves it!
Later that night, Yeon-joo tells her mother what happened with Beom-woo. Her mother listens and then points out that Yeon-joo's cooking has changed. She now prioritises the person eating rather than herself. She asks Yeon-joo to consider why that might be.
The Diamant list is publicly released and everyone is surprised to see that Jungjae has been added as a special addition, receiving three stars! Chairman Han grabs at the opportunity and calls Producer Kim with an idea for a cook-off between the two restaurants.
She then sends her employees to go get Beom-woo, which is how he finds out the restaurant won three stars. However, he isn't interested in the cook-off or being a part of Hansang in general. But it's not that easy. Hansang has bought the building that houses Jungjae and Chairman Han threatens to wipe it out completely. She also threatens Yeon-joo's career.
Myung-sook and Chun-seung head to Jungjae to look for Yeon-joo and find a crowd of people waiting outside. This is how they learn that their restaurant won three Diamant stars. Back at the monastery, Yeon-joo finds out the same from some guests. She also hears about the cook-off.
Beom-woo comes back to town and sees Myung-sook and Chun-seung, who are now working at a different restaurant. They give him a piece of their mind. He breaks the news about the fate of Jungjae and the cook-off off but they think he's conning them again.
At the monastery, Yeon-joo goes to the kitchen and starts cooking. But she has a vision of her younger self who makes her realise she really wants to cook at Jungjae. That night, the head monk tells Yeon-joo that Beom-woo had visited the temple.
A flashback shows Beom-woo seeing Yeon-joo at the temple but not approaching her. The head monk finds him and he talks about how he regrets being a bad person earlier. At present, the head monk encourages Yeon-joo to go back.
In the morning, Beom-woo waits at Jungjae. He is pleasantly surprised to see Myung-sook and Chun-seung arrive to help protect the restaurant. They've called in the grocer and the butcher as reinforcements as well. Soon, at Jungjae and Motto, cameras and banners are set up and the staff get ready for the cook off. Despite no sign of Yeon-joo, Beom-woo encourages Team Jungjae for the competition.
The Episode Review
Episode 9 is a solid, engaging episode. As the heartbreak episode, there is a lot of crying and general sadness but it does not feel overboard. In fact, Go Min-si and Kim Shin-rok both do a great job in bringing out the tears, you can't help but feel for their sense of loss and betrayal.
Kang Ha-neul's muted performance allows Beom-woo's regret and pain to shine through as well. As the final scene of the episode rolls around though, Chun-seung and Myung-sook warm back up to Beom-woo a little too quickly.
The Diamant stars twist is what adds more action and energy to the episode. A fairly predictable move but truth be told, I did not expect it to be the French father from Episode 5. It's a nice touch! What is more unexpected is Chairman Han's reaction.
A cook-off is not what I thought she would jump to but seeing as the next episode is the finale, it only makes sense for Jungjae to finally prove itself in front of Hansang. After the lovely visuals of the cake Yeon-joo made in this episode, here's hoping the finale gives us plenty more shots of delicacies to drool over.

Glass Heart – J-drama Episode 5 Recap & Review

A Plagiarised Song Episode 5 of Glass Heart begins with Tenblank working on a new song. Akane now sports orange hair! Since Kai left, they have a new manager named Gen, who soon drags Naoki out for a meeting. After he leaves, we see a flashback to the country house, in which Akane holds Naoki's hand and is about to confess her feelings. But he interrupts her and describes how he only lives for music and nothing else. He apologises to her and leaves. At present, Akane convinces herself that she's fine. After practice, Akane and Kazushi go out to get some food. Akane confesses that Naoki rejected her but that she's fine now. They come across a poster that reveals Overchrome is releasing new work on the same day as them. Toya sends Akane the new song and she realises it's the same melody as the one Naoki just composed. Naoki, Sho, and Kazushi discuss the situation in Akane's mother's restaurant. Sho suggests they hide this from Naoki and keep their track as is. Elsewhere, Yukino confronts Isagi about the fact that Naoki wrote all of her songs. Isagi makes it clear that she is not his equal and should follow his lead. Meanwhile, Toya gets frustrated that Akane hasn't replied to her. Akane reaches the recording studio in the morning to find her colleagues in a sour mood. Naoki has found out about Toya's song and cancelled their recording session. He says he has plenty of songs in his head and doesn't want to make a fuss about this one. Akane runs across town to meet Toya and asks him to change his song because she knows the Tenblank song means a lot to Naoki. Toya calls Naoki and tells him that Akane is his now. He takes her to his studio, where even Toya's colleague Mahiro confirms that they didn't steal the music. Thanks to the phone call, Naoki rushes to Toya's studio and tells Akane to come with him. Toya then challenges Naoki to a battle, saying they should play both songs and let a crowd decide which is better. The winner gets to release their song. In the process, Akane realises that Toya and Naoki are half brothers! They share a father and both got the melody from Toya's mother. Naoki even recognises one of Toya's pianos as the one from their childhood, during which Toya had crushed his fingers with the keyboard lid. He plays the music on the piano — it's a sorrowful melody that brings even Toya to tears. Before they leave, Mahiro warns Naoki not to use his music to make Toya unhappy. As they return, Naoki admits to Akane that he didn't know how to work well with a person he liked. He did things that he regrets. Akane assures him that the Tenblank members love him even if others don't. And they will reach new heights together. When Akane praises the music he played on the piano, he tells her that the second half was inspired by Tenblank's unique sound. Meanwhile, Yukino is still upset about the fact that Naoki wrote all of her songs. She gets a call from Isagi, who says he's found a way to get a new song for her. The day of the battle between Toya and Naoki arrives. Toya is in the parking lot when he encounters one of his fans, who stabs him. The Episode Review Glass Heart Episode 5 keeps things moving for Tenblank and then adds a bump in the road by bringing Toya and Overchrome back in the picture. The entire plagiarism issue is a nice twist and you're left wondering when and how the theft could have taken place. Which makes the fact that Toya and Naoki are half-brothers a very, very intriguing reveal! It's unexpected but it also make sense in the way they behave around each other. Also, we finally get a glimpse into Naoki's past and learn something more about his character. The J-drama does like leaving certain things to interpretation though. We never understand why Toya crushed his own fingers with the piano or what led to such a sour relationship between the half brothers. We only get glimpses of this and the rest is left to our imaginations. It's not a bad thing but this kind of element might get varied reactions. The series continues to be extremely polished though. The camera work is incredibly sleek, the colours are vivid and it's quite satisfying, visually. That final scene does up the drama by quite a bit but we'll have to wait and see where this goes before making a judgement! Glass Heart – J-drama Episode 3 Recap & Review

Tenblank's TV Debut Episode 3 of Glass Heart begins with the shoot for Crystalline Echo's music video. In the midst of it all, Naoki tells the others he wants the band to play on the TV show Music States. Naoki then gets a visit from Yukino who is shooting at the same studio. Akane seems shocked by how close they seem. Meanwhile, Kai tells Sho her concerns about the band going on TV and about Naoki not taking her opinion on anything. The next morning, Akane comes to the music studio at Naoki's place and finds Kazushi playing his own song. She then learns that they aren't practising that day since Naoki has a performance with Yukino. Akane goes home to help out at her mother's curry shop but finds that her mother has already hired her friend, Eiko, as a replacement. The night before Music States, Akane goes to the music studio alone to practice but is surprised to find Naoki there. He tells her that the world will be introduced to Tenblank the next day and assures her that even through the ups and downs, their band will make it through. The next day, the band arrives at the Music Stage location. Isagi is there and through a conversation with Naoki, we learn that he wrote Yukino's song and agreed to perform with her so Tenblank would get to be the final act of the show. Isagi expects Naoki to write and produce more of Yukino's songs but Naoki doesn't make any promises. Right before the band's rehearsal, Kazushi realises all of their audio tracks are missing. The group sets about recording them again and has to skip rehearsal. Kai tells Akane to head to the makeup rooms, which are located on a boat. On the way, she comes across Yukino who asks her how she doesn't fall in love with Naoki. Akane insists she's focusing on the music. Akane then gets a call from Toya, who is also sure that Akane and Tenblank are going to bomb. Back in the band's tent, Kai realises nobody is listening to her. She heads over to the makeup rooms boat and finds Akane playing the drums in an adjacent room instead. Kai seems overcome with emotion as she thinks about the sync between Naoki and Akane. She then slides the lock outside the room, trapping Akane. The band soon realises she's missing. As they look for her, the boat with the makeup rooms leaves the port and heads out. Akane realises what's happened and call for help. What's worse, her phone is in the other room. Meanwhile, the show begins and Naoki and Yukino play their new single. On the boat, Akane finds another door in the room and finds herself on the highest tier of the boat. She calls for help but no one is there. Luckily, another smaller boat comes towards them and she realises that it has none other than Naoki, Sho, and Kazushi. They get her out and end up making their big debut on the boat itself! Their performance is received well and soon positive comments begin to flood in on social media. Sometime later, the music video for Crystalline Echo comes out as well. As the band watches, Akane is shocked to realise she might be falling for Naoki after all. The Episode Review Glass Heart Episode 3 has some interesting developments. Who knew Kai would try to sabotage her own band? It's intriguing and while we do get some insights on her character — her frustration at being ignored and her insecurities as she compares herself to Akane comes across quite well — I hope the series dives into it in the following episodes too. With Tenblank' successful debut and the social media hype, the stakes are definitely going to be higher from now on. Akane continues to be her wide eyed self though and it is starting to feel a bit one note. Of course, the end of the episode does signal a change but I'd like to see more of Akane than her being awestruck around her band mates. The music continues to be great though with both Tenblank's new song and Yukino and Naoki's new single being solid additions to the soundtrack. Overall the series has a decent pace, never slows down too much, and that touch of melodrama keeps things quite engaging!
