Published on: Sat, May 24, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Bersatu has slammed the government over the apparent abandonment of hybrid solar projects in Pulau Banggi, despite years of promises and public funds being spent. Bersatu Sabah Women's Chief, Rahimah Majid, said the projects initiated between 2017 and 2018 under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) headed by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid remain incomplete, with no clear explanation given. 'These projects were supposed to bring electricity to Pulau Tanjung Manawali, Pulau Tigabu, Kampung Kok Simpul, and Kampung Selamat, yet they lie in neglect while equipment deteriorates and villagers remain in the dark,' she said after a recent visit.
Advertisement Rahimah criticised Zahid's recent remarks on Sabah's infrastructure, calling them hollow in light of these long-standing failures. 'This is more than mismanagement, it's a betrayal of the rural communities' basic right to electricity. "We demand full disclosure on project status, funding use, and contractor accountability," she said. Rahimah called for urgent government action, stressing that continued delays only prove how long Banggi residents have been sidelined. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? X accuses French prosecutors of politically motivated free speech probe

PARIS: Elon Musk's social media platform X has accused French prosecutors of launching a politically motivated criminal investigation, claiming it threatens users' free speech. The company denied all allegations and stated it would not comply with the probe. Earlier this month, Paris prosecutors escalated a preliminary investigation into X over suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction. Authorities enlisted police to examine potential wrongdoing by the company or its executives. 'Based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,' the platform posted on its Global Government Affairs account. 'For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities' demands, as we have a legal right to do.' In a sharp rebuke, X also alleged the probe was instigated by French lawmaker Eric Bothorel, who accused the platform of manipulating its algorithm for foreign interference purposes. X dismissed the claim as 'completely false.' The Paris prosecutors' office and Bothorel did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk, a former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has repeatedly criticized European governments for what he sees as attacks on free speech. He has also expressed support for some of the region's far-right parties. The French investigation could widen tensions between Washington and European capitals over online discourse regulations. Former Trump administration officials have previously accused platforms of censoring right-wing voices globally. X further objected to prosecutors' demands for access to its recommendation algorithm and real-time user post data, which would be analyzed by researchers David Chavalarias and Maziyar Panahi. The platform accused both of showing 'open hostility towards X,' raising concerns about the probe's impartiality. Neither researcher responded immediately to requests for comment. X also criticized the use of organized crime charges in the investigation, which could allow authorities to wiretap employees' personal devices. The case follows similar legal scrutiny in France against Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, who faces judicial supervision over alleged organized crime on his platform. Durov denies wrongdoing. Earlier this month, Musk agreed with Durov's claim that French officials were 'waging a crusade against free speech and tech progress,' responding simply, 'true.' - Reuters

Grassroots governance in Sabah – an illusion?

Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 By: Anita Limjoon, Paul Canigea P, Fiona V Loijon Text Size: The State Government provided RM277 million to JKKKs in the year 2024, but this money decreased to RM247 million in 2025, and JKDM frameworks are generally lacking clearly defined budgetary allowances or operational policies. SABAH rural society is under-developed to such degree that it does not serve real needs and wishes of the people. Though administration units at the village level like the Jawatankuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung (JKKK) have been initiated to act as a medium between the citizenry and the State agencies, the voices of the local citizens are often pushed to the margins throughout the formulation processes both at the state and national levels. Advertisement Originally, these committees were intended to translate local concerns into the policy process, but they often work under very harsh conditions, including limited funding, training, independence, and ultimately reducing their capabilities and compromising community trust in their efficiency. Overlapping of mandate between the traditional JKKK and the new federal-level institutions, especially the Jawatankuasa Desa Madani (JKDM), also complicates the issues facing village development.
