Kerala child rights panel all set to launch Internet radio for children
Come June 18, children in the State can listen to an Internet radio being launched by the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR) exclusively for them.
Radio Nellikka will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Programme schedule
The Internet radio will begin with four hours of programming initially that can be heard from anywhere in the world. New programmes will be broadcast from Monday to Friday while repeat programmes will be aired on Saturday and Sunday.
The idea of Internet radio for children was first conceived during the previous tenure of KeSCPCR chairperson K.V. Manoj Kumar, who, inspired by various local radio groups among children, thought of translating the idea to a wider canvas, especially considering the commission's reach. The idea is finally coming to fruition in Mr. Kumar's second tenure.
The launch of the radio assumes greater significance especially against the backdrop of growing mental health challenges, ills of substance abuse, perils of cyberdom, increasing social media addiction and rise in suicides by children.
Mr. Manoj Kumar says that as the commission has its objective creation of a child-friendly Kerala, messages and promotions towards that, laws related to children, commission's orders, and children's rights and responsibilities will all be dealt with during the various programmes intended to reach children through parents.
The idea is to reach out to people through messages on children's protection, education, and empowerment.
The commission also hopes to put across its orders to society without risks of misinterpretation through the radio, says Mr. Manoj Kumar.
Speeches by prominent personalities and interactions with experts will be broadcast to examine aspects related to child safety and prevention of violence and abuse against them.
The commission will prepare segments related to its orders and news and other official matters. An internal committee has been formed to analyse the programmes broadcast.
However, the commission intends to educate as well as entertain through the initiative. Even then, directions have been given to ensure that the content is child-friendly.
Listeners can tune in to the radio aby time that suits them. The programmes will be ad-free. From 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., they can hear Right Turn, a programme on children's rights and laws. It will be followed by a phone-in programme 'Immini valya karyam' that will feature real-life stories, conversations, and interactions. 'Akaashadooth' can be heard from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Children, parents, and teachers will share their joys doubts, and troubles through letters in this slot.
Uncle Boss from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. is a radio chat where questions can be asked by children to their problems and apprehensions.
All these programmes will be repeated the same day.
To reach 25 lakh families
The commission hopes to reach out to 25 lakh families in the State initially.

KOCHI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday inaugurated the LuLu Group's state-of-the-art IT Twin Towers at SmartCity, Kakkanad --- a landmark Rs 1,500-crore project that adds key momentum to the state's transformation into a digitally driven, knowledge-powered economy. Strategically located within the SmartCity Kochi SEZ, the 152-metre-tall towers are the tallest and largest IT infrastructure in South India, offering a total built-up area of 3.5 million sqft, with 2.5 million sqft of leasable space. He also announced the LuLu Group's upcoming Rs 500-crore investment in a new IT tower at Infopark Phase 2, which will span 9.5 lakh sqft and is expected to create 7,500 additional jobs, further boosting Kerala's IT sector. LuLu Group chairman Yusuffali M A described the twin towers as 'a symbol of our vision to make Kerala a competitive hub for global technology players' and emphasised the project's role in driving re-migration by creating high-quality job opportunities for youth within Kerala. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan called the towers 'an architectural and technological marvel' and added that the investment by LuLu Group 'inspires confidence in Kerala as a hub for high-end innovation.' State BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the infrastructure 'will act as a catalyst for Kerala's digital economy and support the return of skilled professionals to the state.' Key features of the towers include robotic parking for 4,500 vehicles, 67 high-speed elevators, a 2,500-seater food court, 600-seater conference hall, and on-site helipad. Mediapersons facing challenging times: CM Pinarayi Vijayan
KOCHI: Mediapersons working in visual and print media are facing multiple challenges with the development of information technology and the spread of social media, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kochi on Saturday. Though they are called the protectors of democracy, mediapersons are facing challenges in their work sphere, he said while inaugurating the Journalist Welfare Fund organised by Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) in Kochi. 'As India's ranking in the World Press Freedom Index declines, there has been a decline in the rights of journalists. The anti-labour policies of the Union government add to the crisis. The government is trying to merge the Working Journalist Act with the labour code. Concerns have been raised about the fate of the Wage Board formed to ensure better remuneration for journalists,' said Pinarayi Vijayan. Congratulating the KUWJ for launching its own Welfare Fund, he termed it as the right move for survival in challenging times. The decision to support the families of journalists during difficult times reflects the compassion and care towards colleagues. Assuring that there are no insolvable issues between the government and journalists, the chief minister said the problems regarding the Journalist Pension Scheme can be solved through discussions. He also congratulated the KUWJ for launching Breaking D, a campaign against drug menace. Twin tower boost for Kochi's IT infra
Kochi: Giving a major boost to IT infrastructure in the state, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated LuLu IT Twin Towers on SmartCity campus in Kochi on Saturday. The state-of-the-art complex, developed with an investment of Rs 1,500cr, was unveiled in the presence of ministers, industry leaders and eminent personalities from various walks of life. Located within SmartCity Kochi special economic zone (SEZ), the project is expected to bring leading global companies to SmartCity campus and generate around 30,000 employment opportunities. While inaugurating the project, Vijayan said the state is transitioning into a digitally driven economy and infrastructure projects like LuLu IT Twin Towers are vital in attracting global tech investments and generating employment for our youth. "If we truly seek development, everyone, including govt, private sector and various political and social organizations, must come together in unity," he said. The CM informed that LuLu group will launch another IT tower project with an investment of Rs 500cr on Infopark Phase II campus in Kochi.
