Trainer Joe Pride sets sights on clean sweep of Randwick quaddie on Saturday

News.com.au05-06-2025
Trainer Joe Pride can become the 'Quaddie King' if his stable quartet of Cool Jakey, In Flight, Headley Grange and Storm The Ramparts sweep the final four races at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
In three of the four Quaddie legs, Pride has the early TAB Fixed Odds favourite including brilliant mare In Flight ($3.40) for the Listed $200,000 Bob Charley AO Stakes (1100m).
In Flight scored a breakthrough stakes win in the Listed Bright Shadow Quality at Doomben last start and Pride has brought her back to Sydney for the Australian Turf Club's feature winter sprint.
'I just feel this is the right race for her,'' Pride said. 'She is a little ripper, I love taking her to the races because she has some serious talent and the outstanding thing about her is her ability to handle wet tracks.''
In Flight is having only her fourth run back this preparation and Pride plans to keep her going over the winter months.
'I want to make the most of the fact she is up for winter as she is such a good wet tracker,'' Pride said.
'I'll wait until after Saturday's race and then work out what we do with her. The Ramornie Handicap is a chance although I'd like it to be on a wet track.
'But the Queensland carnival goes on forever so I would be surprised if there wasn't a race up there on a wet track that is suitable for her.''

In Flight might be working into her winter preparation but stablemate Cool Jakey has already had an extended race campaign but seems to be improving with every start.
Cool Jakey started his campaign in midsummer and is about to line up for his eighth run this time in when he contests the Sydney Roosters Partners Handicap (1600m).
The Pride-trained 'miler' is the $2.80 favourite after finishing a close last start second to Hollywood Hero – with Nellie Leylax third – over the same course and distance two weeks ago.
But the big difference this time is Cool Jakey, with the benefit of apprentice Jace McMurray 's claim, meets his two rivals significantly better at the weights.
'Jace can ride at 52kg and can use a fair bit of his claim for Cook Jakey,'' the trainer said.
'So, he is 5kg better off against Hollywood Hero and a couple of kilos better off against the third horse.
'You rarely hear me talking about weights particularly in sprint races, I don't worry about them too much, but when they are on a wet track over a mile they (weights) mean something.''

Storm The Ramparts, a half-brother to Pride's 2022 Bob Charley Stakes winner Dragonstone, is the $4.60 favourite for the closer, the Toyota Forklifts Handicap (1000m).
Pride said Storm The Ramparts had done well since winning over the Randwick 1000m course two weeks ago.
'He will be thereabouts again, he loves the mud,'' the trainer said.

Pride also has Cosmonova entered for the final leg of the Quaddie but conceded the mare was an unlikely starter on a heavy track.
This leaves the remaining Quaddie leg, the Singapore Pools Handicap (1300m), where Pride has four entries – Headley Grange, Testator Silens, Estadio Mestalla and Accredited.
Although Accredited ($6) is the shortest in betting of the stable's four runners, Pride said the sprinter would not run on a heavy track.
'Accredited and Cosmonova will come out on a heavy track and I couldn't see how it wouldn't be heavy,'' he said.
This means Headley Grange ($6.50) is looming as the Pride pick given the gelding's penchant for rain-affected going.

— SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 11, 2025

'It's a good race for Headley Grange, he's an extremely genuine horse and his share of talent,'' Pride said.
'He is a good horse on any track but he's very effective on wet tracks. He was unlucky one day earlier in his career at Kembla on a heavy track and ran into Briasa!
'Testator Silens ($17) has had the right preparation for this race. He's had two runs back, that probably counts for a bit and he is massively down in the weights from last start. He is a bit underestimated by the market for sure.''

Carrie Bickmore sizzles in skimpy bikini while on holiday with Tommy Little

Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little have once again fuelled romance rumours after going on holiday together. The pair travelled to Hayman Island with some of their colleagues from the Carrie & Tommy radio show as Bickmore stripped down to a skimpy bikini. Bickmore celebrated the trip away by sharing some pictures of herself showing off her slim physique in a hot pink bikini. Carrie shared a reel of photos from the idyllic getaway, including one where she sizzles in a hot pink-patterned bikini. She also shared a snap of herself in a low-cut dress as she headed to dinner with Little and some of their other radio station colleagues. The celebrity duo have been at the centre of rumours that there's a romance between them for months, with fans believing their on-air back and forth is far too flirty to be platonic. Rumours began after Bickmore split from her second husband, Chris Walker, in January 2023. The pair were together for more than a decade and share two daughters, Evie and Adelaide. Little, who split from ex-girlfriend Natalie Kyriacou in 2021, addressed rumours of a romance between them back in March, denying that there's any kind of spark between them. 'There have been romance rumours about Carrie and I, but unfortunately, because Carrie is in my age bracket (my Tinder age bracket is legal to dead), but I'm not in Carrie's age bracket,' he said. 'She only likes much older, powerful men.' Meanwhile, the pair both recently appeared together on the finale of The Project. The Project's longest-serving host, Bickmore, was close to tears thanking everyone she crossed paths with over 13 years. She left the show to fully devote herself to fundraising efforts for brain cancer. 'It's been ten years since my Gold Logie speech, since I started Carrie's Beanies for brain cancer and I genuinely, I wanted to raise $1m. I would not have raised over $25m if it wasn't for you guys at home watching. So thank you so much.' Comedic regular Little also went on to explain his motivation for joining the show. 'The one thing that I did want to say is to the people back home; my time on the show – which I will be forever grateful for – was just trying to make you laugh.' 'People at home, if you'd often have days where you wouldn't have a laugh – that's all I wanted to give you and I understand that it is a privilege doing what we get to do.'

West Indies v Australia, second Test day two live: Scoreboard, latest news from Grenada

Don't miss out on the headlines from Cricket. Followed categories will be added to My News. Australia is hoping to cash in on variable bounce in the Grenada pitch which reared its head on day one of the second Test against the West Indies. Pat Cummins has dismissed by a delivery which kept low, the most significant sign of demons in the pitch on the opening day of play. FOLLOW THE KEY MOMENTS FROM DAY TWO WITH DANIEL CHERNY BELOW 'I think there was probably opportunity there for a few more runs. But we're in the game with 280-plus. I think there was enough variable (bounce) there on day one,' Aussie keeper Alex Carey told SEN. 'Potentially that will come into play tomorrow, three and four. I guess prefer to have 280 than anything less and we're in the game.' On Pat Cummins' dismissal — when the ball kept alarmingly low — Carey said: 'We saw Pat Cummins' dismissal today. That's 50 overs in and it stays low. There was enough movement there early for sure.' Carey said Australia's top-three played encouragingly to help set up a total of 286 which was spearheaded by the gloveman and Beau Webster. 'I thought the openers started really well today … I thought Usman and especially Sam Konstas, his intent was fantastic. I thought he really looked the part out there today. Then Cam Green came in and did the same thing. Had great intent. Played good shots. He looked really solid. They are promising signs,' he said. Rosehill Turf Talk: Best bet gets key gear change, plus a $71 tip

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Form experts Mitch Cohen and Shayne O'Cass debate all the key chances at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, including a recently-gelded Godolphin sprinter and a Kris Lees runner that will go around at a massive price. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Shayno: Hello Mitchy. I can't help myself; can never walk past an honour roll. Past Winter Stakes winners that stood out – San Domenico, Nebo Road, All Our Mob. You can go first Mitchy, who will join that list after Saturday? Mitch: Word is you're on the honour roll at a certain Thai restaurant in Haymarket, Shayno. As for the Winter Stakes, tipping it will be Welwal. He went enormous in that Civic Stakes behind Headley Grange and can go one better here. Wet track has to be a huge plus! • Darby tons up as the winners keep rolling Shayno: I am pretty keen on Ruby Flyer. In fact I made him my best bet. I hope it stays nice and wet, heavy would do more without being a bog. He got some very good form at a mile, so 1400m fresh is right up the alley. Mitch: Good to see a two-year-old race back on the program after a couple of weeks without, albeit there nearly all three now Shayno. I reckon we are going to see a very serious horse step out again – that's Raging Force. Tipping he makes a statement and we see him making his presence felt in races like the Rosebud soon. Shayno: This is a 'before scratchings' statement; but wow, what a line-up. I should have learned by now that race experience is gold in two-year-old racing, more so on a heavy track but I fancy one of Waller's bluebloods to run well here, namely the Gerry Harvey-bred Portofino. Mitch: Could we see a Kerry Parker quinella in the Midway? Close Encounter and Equilibrist look to be great chances and they're both double figure odds. • Pride has eyes on weather for Winter Stakes top seed Shayno: I feel like you should be writing this one Mitchy. but I have a Kembla quinella for this Midway too. Kerry Parker's Equilibrist is so close to a win and so far as I see it, Noble Soldier's 'best' beats them all. Mitch: All Kembla content welcome here mate. If we are looking elsewhere, I am really keen on Tarpaulin first run back a gelding. This is a horse that finished a length off the winner in Group 2 company last prep and finds himself in a Benchmark 78 here. The wet track should be no worries for him. • Sistina's a special but still plenty of intrigue for horse of the year gongs Shayno: Whatever happens I hope it is no better than a Soft 7 by the last so my longshot of the day, Valimi, wins. Mitch: As soon as I saw that name in the form guide, I knew you'd be finding it. $71 for the punters. The value for me is Cormac T, race 7. Reckon he bounces back in a big way.
