These Are The Best Looking Commuter Cars From The 1990s

Yahoo24-05-2025

Most of the time, when car enthusiasts talk about beautiful cars, their minds immediately go to sports cars, luxury cars, and even supercars. If you're anything like me, you've probably told yourself that it sounds silly to label commuter cars and economy cars as beautiful, or even good-looking, for that matter.
While I still can't bring myself to do that even today, I can say with certainty that we've seen some fantastic-looking economy cars and commuter cars over the past few decades. The '90s were just one of many highlights.
You've either seen the original Renault Twingo as a meme on the internet, or maybe you grew up in Europe and saw them around town. Launched in the early 90s as Renault's entry-level small car, the Twingo became an instant hit due to its fantastic, characterful design.
The bubbly headlights, the tiny dimensions, that instantly recognizable cabin air vent on the hood, the short overhangs, one wheel at each corner, it was all there. The Twingo was a pioneer in the world of cutesy automotive styling, and it's such an icon that Renault is getting ready to bring it back as an EV.
Mercedes-Benz had quite the idea to shake up the small car market back in the '90s. As Autoevolution tells us, it struck a deal with Swiss watchmaker Swatch to create one of the most revolutionary cars the world has ever seen. The Smart Fortwo, originally the Smart City Coupe, launched in 1998 and became pretty popular in Europe.
An absolute masterclass of design, the original Fortwo was super distinctive and just looked fun. The impossibly short length, the tall proportions, the wheels at each corner, the bubbly headlights in the facelift version — it was unlike anything the world had ever seen before.
After a 40-year production run, Ford finally replaced the compact Escort with the original Focus in the late 1990s, at least in most of the world. It set the hatchback world on fire, quickly becoming a bestseller in the UK and all over Europe.
A brand-new model meant totally new styling. The Mk1 Focus was one of the first Fords in Europe to debut the Blue Oval's New Edge design language, and it definitely worked with the shape of the Focus. The design was also highly functional, including very high-mounted taillights to ensure maximum visibility. To sweeten the deal, the Mk1 Focus was also great to drive. Even Jeremy Clarkson loved it!
Also called the Bora in Europe, the Mk4 Jetta was a huge hit in North America. This was one of the last VWs to carry the 1.9 TDI turbodiesel in North America, which everyone knows now as a reliability powerhouse.
The styling was mostly Mk4 Golf, with a trunk on the back instead of a hatch, and a mildly restyled front end. For as simple as it was, it totally worked. Even in stock form, the Mk4 Jetta was subtly good-looking, made only better by the addition of exterior mods.
Finally, something that should be very familiar to Americans and Canadians: The EM was the chassis code for the sixth-generation Honda Civic coupe, which was sold alongside the four-door sedan and the three-door hatch throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
Some readers likely have fond memories of driving the EM1 Civic Si in Need for Speed Underground 2. It's a popular car for crazy exterior mods, but if we set those aside for a moment, the Civic coupe is a bit of a style icon. Sure, it's still a Honda Civic, but it's clean, simple, and effective.
One of the most infamous cars to come out of the 90s, the third-generation Ford Taurus is well-known in the car community for its unusual and, according to most people, badly executed rounded design. While the sedan mostly deserves the criticism, the wagon is a different story.
For some reason, when you add a longroof body to the otherwise bizarro third-gen Taurus, it really works. Japan loves these things, which is why you often see them with some pretty heavy exterior mods over there. The third-generation Taurus wagon is rare, but it's worth a second look if you do see one. There's one in Japan with three-spoke wheels, and it looks absolutely glorious.
Before we got the revived Dodge Charger, the Intrepid took care of sedan duties in the Dodge lineup. As Car and Driver tells us, it rode on the same LH platform as the more luxurious Chrysler LHS, but it was a cheaper and less luxurious alternative.
The second-generation Intrepid was pretty ordinary and nothing to write home about, but the first generation was really rather cool. Nowadays, you might see a similarly styled car on a cyberpunk-themed poster, or maybe on Pinterest. That's not a bad thing at all, as anything cyberpunk is cool.
One of the longest-lasting cars in American automotive history, the Ford Thunderbird went through eleven generations before being discontinued in the mid-2000s. The retro-styled final Thunderbird wasn't particularly well received, so it's time we gave the tenth generation some love.
While the Turbo Coupe did not come back for this generation, as reported by The Truth About Cars, the Super Coupe used a supercharged V6, and you could even get it with the Modular V8 from the Mustang. The tenth-generation Thunderbird was a very simple design, but it had a lot of presence, and the proportions were just right. It may not be that much of a commuter car, but it certainly is in comparison to a supercar or sports car.
The 1990s were the last hurrah of the old-school American full-size sedan, notably GM's B-body sedans. The B-body platform has quite the story, as told by Curbside Classic. Along with the Chevy Caprice, Americans said their last goodbye to the Buick Roadmaster. The nameplate briefly returned to the Buick lineup in the early '90s, and this would be the last car to wear the badge.
You could get the Roadmaster as a classic sedan, sure, but that's no fun. You could also get it as a wagon, and isn't this just one of the coolest wagons you've ever seen? Clean lines, insane length, and, of course, the fake wood panels. You could carry an absurd amount of stuff, and while it was nothing special back in the day, it has aged exceptionally well.
Before Suzuki withdrew from the US and Canada altogether, it was really trying to make it big. The Vitara was an obvious choice to bring over, but it was initially sold under GM's Geo brand as the Geo Tracker. As CarExpert tells us, this is one of the many GM brands that were sent to the chopping block. Eventually, the US and Canada came to know it as the Suzuki Sidekick.
It may not be a Jimny, but the Suzuki Sidekick is a brilliant piece of design, regardless. It screams, "Look, I'm an off-roader, too!" The chunky tires, the big fender flares, the boxy design, the spare tire on the back — it's all there. Suzuki did an excellent job with the design, which is why the Sidekick remains a pretty popular small off-roader even today.

Spied: AMG's New 4-Door Supercar Caught Testing In the Alps

Hot on the heels of the AMG GT XX concept's reveal on Tuesday , spy videographers have caught Mercedes testing the production version gliding stealthily through the Alps. Expected to share much of the concept's design, AMG's all-electric, four-door supercar wears the same sleek fastback bodylines as the GT XX, albeit heavily camouflaged in a patterned wrap. The massive grille seems to be making a return, as do the circular-pattern taillights. But the headlights are notably different, with a more production-ready tri-star design, inspired by the brand's logo. Though we never see this test mule pull off any quick corners or hard accelerations, we do get a taste of its sound. That's right, this EV isn't silent. There's a distinct engine-like idle emanating from underneath that camouflage, a feature hyped up by executives at the concept's reveal on Wednesday. There's not much to glean from the sound itself—it doesn't seem like a burbling V-8 to us—but it's also likely not finalized. So take the noise with a grain of salt, for now. As for performance, there should be a lot of it. The AMG GT XX concept is rated at 1,340 horsepower thanks to three axial-flux motors, two at the rear, and another up front. It runs on an 800-volt architecture for ultra-quick charging and uses direct-cooled cylindrical battery cells for better cooling attributes. While that power figure might not be the same, it's very likely the production car will carry this same powertrain setup when it's revealed later this year. As for pricing, the AMG GT EV will likely compete directly against its closest segment rival, the Porsche Taycan , which starts at $101,395. Bentley Doesn't Want Mercedes-Benz To Revive These Iconic Cabriolets

Imagine the rejuvenating waft of ocean air flowing through your long and full head of hair. The sun's heavy rays beat down on you with the same effect as steaming rocks in a sauna, but your cashmere polo stays void of sweat, thanks to the blissfully effective ventilation packed beneath the supple leather seats in your Mercedes-Benz convertible as you dash briskly out of town, away from your day job, and off into the cloudless weekend. This is what life is like in a drop-top Mercedes–all the theatrical joie de vivre of a top-end Benz, elevated exponentially by the disappearance of a roof. It's a simple recipe for success in the business of flashy, high-end luxury, but it seems these days that, in the pursuit of cost-cutting, shareholder value maximization, and regulatory compliance, Mercedes-Benz seems to have turned its back on some of the brand's most coveted convertible models. Models like the S-Class Cabriolet and the G-Class Cabriolet have long acted as high watermarks that set Mercedes-Benz apart from other so-called "luxury brands" who never had the guts to build such inaccessibly niche yet over-the-top extravagant models. Kids might have bright orange Lamborghinis sticky-puttied onto their bedroom walls, but the grown elite fantasize about lavish Rolls-Royce Dropheads and sultry convertible Bentleys. With models like the S-Cab and the G-Cab, Mercedes-Benz signalled to the world that it could keep up with the elite go-tos like Rolls-Royce and Bentley in terms of elegance and excessive extravagance, all with German build quality to boot. Neither Audi nor BMW ever offered drop-top variants of their full-size sedan or of a military-grade SUV, and that level of extremism has thus become synonymous with Mercedes-Benz instead of Audi or BMW. Using generative text-to-image artificial intelligence and Adobe Photoshop, we take an imagined look at what some iconic Mercedes-Benz convertible models would look like if revived for the modern day, using contemporary styling and modern body styles. These renders are purely for speculative and entertainment purposes and in no way depict any actual Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, or Mercedes-Maybach products. Only a few short years ago, the Mercedes-Benz cabriolet lineup included variants of most of the brand's traditional sedans, including the C-Class Cabrio, the E-Class Cabrio, and the venerable S-Class Cabrio, which represented the pinnacle of extravagance in the standard Mercedes-Benz lineup and could even be had in AMG and Maybach flavors. Now that Mercedes has replaced both the C- and E-Class Cabriolet with the sporty and modern CLE-Class, the world has been left without a worthy successor to the big body S-Class Cabriolet. Based on the W223 platform, an all-new Mercedes-Benz S580 Cabriolet could make use of the model's twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with mild hybrid drive to produce up to 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, placing its performance stats close to those of the 2025 Bentley Continental GT Azure, which packs 516 horsepower from a similar, hybridized and twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 setup. Reviving the S-Class Cabriolet on the Mercedes-Benz W223 platform could even spawn AMG and Maybach variants, just as the W222 generation can so proudly claim. Imagine a high-performance Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance Cabriolet with 791 horsepower and a whopping 1,055 lb-ft of torque from a handcrafted twin-turbocharged plug-in hybrid 4.0-liter V8. Using 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive and an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, imagine doing 0-60 mph sprints in just 3.3 seconds with the wind in your hair. Alternatively, for those who appreciate the S-Class Cabrio's massive talents as a superbly luxurious cruiser, a Mercedes-Maybach S680 Cabriolet variant could make use of the lush, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 found in the contemporary Maybach saloon, which packs a 621 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque punch. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet has become a true cult classic in its own right, as its striking yet classy appearance has aged like fine wine. The G-Class Cabriolet has become so coveted, in fact, that clean examples command exponentially higher price tags than standard, non-cabriolet variants. For example, this 2006 Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet, auctioned on Bring a Trailer, sold for an astonishing $350,000 USD back in 2022. Compare that to this 2008 Mercedes-Benz G500 that sold just a month prior for $52,500, despite being two years newer, and it becomes clear that the collector car market recognizes tremendous value in the topless two-door G-Wagen variant. Perhaps Mercedes should take the hint and bring the massively desirable cabriolet back into its model lineup. Although the contemporary Mercedes-Benz lineup is not entirely absent of convertible offerings, the CLE-Class exists as the sole traditional cabriolet offering, with the SL-Class carrying the flag for the iconic Mercedes roadster format. It's unfortunate to see such historic and coveted convertibles vanish from the German automaker's legendary lineup, but we're hopeful that we'll see a comeback soon. Perhaps we'll even see some electric Mercedes cabrios eventually! Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Mercedes Wants To Ditch George Russell For Max Verstappen Ahead Of 2026 F1 Rules Change

George Russell has not yet signed a new contract with his Mercedes-AMG F1 team for the 2026 season. It seems team boss and "F1 The Movie" producer Toto Wolff is trying to keep his team's options open for next season, actively attempting to lure the four-time World Drivers' Champion Max Verstappen away from his recalcitrant Red Bull Racing team. "As Mercedes, they want to be back on top, and if you're going to be back on top you need to make sure you've got the best drivers, the best engineers, the best pitcrew, and that's what Mercedes are chasing. So, it's only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing," Russell admitted to ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix. Russell, having won four Grands Prix for the three-pointed star since he joined the team in 2022, including the most recent outing at the Canadian Grand Prix, is confident his performance will earn him a new contract in short order. With an entirely new set of regulations on the horizon, Mercedes will want to hit the ground running in 2026 with a solid lineup of adaptable drivers. Because of that, I think the team would be foolish to drop George for Verstappen. When everything is perfect for Max and he has the exact right car, the Red Bull ace is nearly unstoppable. Face him with even the lightest of adverse conditions, and he implodes into an atomic bomb of insecurity and dangerous on-track antics. If Mercedes build a mildly competitive car, as they have this season, George will unequivocally be the right answer, and I'm confident he's got enough talent to take a championship if the car is as well-built as the 2025 McLarens or 2023 Red Bull have been. Max might be able to make a perfect car even more perfect, but in a merely passable car he'll be a liability for the team, as he has been in 2025. Read more: Every 2025 Formula 1 Livery, Ranked From Worst To Best Conveniently the Mercedes AMG F1 team has two seats, so George doesn't necessarily have to be the one to go in order to make room for Mr. Verstappen. In that same interview, propped up by his recent win, Russell commented "I feel with the performance I'm showing at the moment I've got zero reasons to be worried." That leaves Mercedes-AMG junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli on the chopping block. The 18-year-old recent grad joined Mercedes for the 2025 season on a one-year contract to replace Sir Lewis Hamilton, who departed for Ferrari after delivering 8 World Constructor Championships for the Merc squad. Antonelli is holding his own, but hardly filling those big shoes, scoring fewer than half as many points as Russell across the season. If I were Toto Wolff, and thank goodness I'm not, I certainly would not ditch either of these drivers to woo Max Verstappen. In spite of Max's generational talent, he's a potential liability to the team if he replaces Russell, and the team would practically implode if he replaced Antonelli. A George Russell and Max Verstappen duo at Mercedes would be diabolical and the infighting would break even the most stoic team principal. Want more like this?
