Apple watch-style bracelets and spice wands - inside tech push to fix jails
Digital wands that can detect drugs and biometric smartwatch-style bracelets could be used to reduce violence, addiction and other harms in jails or in the community.
Prisons Minister James Timpson is exploring the use of technology as he battles to deal with an ongoing criminal justice crisis. He is looking at a wide range of radical tech ideas, including special smell detectors to replace sniffer dogs and thermal sensors to be on suicide watch in jail cells.
Outside of prisons, facial recognition technology that can be integrated into CCTV cameras in nightclubs and pubs to catch criminals who are banned from the premises is being explored. It could also be used within ring doorbells where an offender is on house arrest to ensure they are at home or that bad actors do not visit them.
On Tuesday seven top tech companies pitched their ideas in a Dragon's Den-style event in central London, which The Mirror attended. Among the pitches included 'smell detector' devices which use synthetic brain cells and AI to replicate the behaviour of a human nose.
The sensor can be attached to airport-style security scanners or in areas in a jail to detect if drugs are present, not only to confiscate them but also to build up intelligence about illegal drug use within a prison.
Elsewhere, one company was offering a 'spice wand' that can detect the drug with bright ultraviolet light. There is a major crisis in prisons in England and Wales related to synthetic cannabinoids - often referred to as 'spice'. Inmates often receive letters in the post soaked in the drug, which is difficult for officers to identify, but could be tackled using the UV wand tool.
Biometric bracelets that can monitor a wearer's heart rate to try to predict stress levels and avoid violent outbursts are also being looked at, for use inside and outside jails.
The wrist watches - which look similar to an Apple-style smartwatch - would also be able to 'nudge' offenders in the community to go to a probation or mental health appointment, as well as monitoring the GPS location of the wearer like an ankle tag. The watches can connect to an app, which is also available to victims and can alert them if a perpetrator is too close to them, for instance if there is a restraining order in place.
Elsewhere much of the technology proposed would seek to cut down admin tasks for probation staff, including one app that would allow offenders in the community to complete a check-in form with an officer on their phone.
Tracking devices inserted under offenders' skin were also reportedly suggested to ministers. Some human rights campaigners branded the idea 'alarmingly dystopian".
Asked if Britain was moving towards Big Brother-style surveillance tactics, Prisons minister James Timpson told The Mirror: 'Victims come first. We're not scared of surveillance, and we're not scared of creating a prison outside of prison in someone's house, if that is the best way to deal with them.
'The fact is that when people are in the community, they're still being punished, and we need to make sure that their lives are restricted in the way we want them to be restricted, both for victims and also as part of their punishment.'
Pressed on inserting trackers into people's skin, Lord Timpson said: 'I think we need to look at everything. I think we need to be brave and we need to make sure that we really focus on what's going to make a difference.'
He admitted anything new you do in any organisation 'comes with risks', but added: 'But for me, the risk of not embracing technology far outweighs [those] if we don't embrace technology, especially in probation... They're crying out for technology. When probation staff joined the service, they didn't join the service to do 80% of their time doing admin. They joined the service to help people turn their lives around.'
More than 90 companies initially pitched ideas to the Ministry of Justice, which were whittled down to seven firms, including Accenture, Scram System and SentrX.

One such device, Apple's AirTag, has seen a significant price reduction thanks to an early Amazon Prime Day discount. Having used it on their travels to France, New York, Italy, and Botswana, the Mirror's commerce editor Harriet Morphy-Morris highly recommends it to friends and family. The AirTag uses Apple's Find My Network, allowing users to track its movements continuously. Usually priced at £35 per tag, it is currently available for just £26.60 on Amazon, making it cheaper than buying directly from Apple. Setting up this trackable gadget is simple for iOS users. Once the AirTag is activated, simply bring it close to your iPhone or iPad, and a 'connect' notification will appear. You can then assign a name to your AirTag and register it with your Apple ID. Harriet did this back in 2022, and since using an AirTag for travel, she has never misplaced their luggage. The AirTag emits a unique network signal that can be detected by other nearby AirTag users. It sends its location to these users, who can then anonymously share the location with you. Apple enthusiasts may already be acquainted with the 'Find My' app, and the AirTag functions similarly to tracking a misplaced phone during the 'Find My iPhone' era. With the Find My app, Harriet said they can instantly see the location of their bags and when they were last there - particularly useful when boarding a plane, as it allows her to confirm whether their luggage has been loaded. AirTags do present a limitation for many travellers and mobile users, as they are exclusive to iOS, leaving Android users out in the cold. This is where competing devices such as the Tile tag and select models from Chipolo prove beneficial, as we outline below. There are alternatives from Chipolo, Tile and Samsung. The Tile by Life360 is available for purchase on Amazon at £34.99, a slight increase compared to the currently discounted AirTag. Like the AirTag, it also tracks items it's attached to via an app, but instead of immediately displaying the tracker's location upon opening (as with the AirTag), you have to select 'location history'. Harriet has previously compared the Tile tracker with the AirTag while travelling, and it does provide a slightly more accurate location on the map, including nearby shops and attractions that iOS doesn't display. Another alternative is Chipolo. The Chipolo Card Spot, which is compatible only with iPhones, is currently reduced to £19 and offers a slimmer option that can easily fit into purses and wallets. iPhone glitch leaves baffled users with a 'black dot of death' on their screens - here's what to do if you spot one on your Apple handset
A mysterious iPhone glitch has left some baffled users with a 'black dot of death' on their screens. As the name suggests, the issue sees users left with a small black circle at the top of the screen, just below the Dynamic Island. Reddit user @seseweto first posted a picture showing the black dot on the screen of his iPhone 15 seven days ago. He wrote: 'Black dot of death on my iphone 15 ios 18.5. Suddenly the black dot appeared on the screen. 'If I take a screenshot it doesn't appear, that's why I have to take a picture with another phone.' Since then, several other users have come forward with the same problem. 'Had same issue. Had to get my 16p screen replaced,' one user commented. Another added: 'Same. Mine were in the top right of my screen by the battery.' While the reason for the issue remains unclear, several Reddit users have put forward their theories. 'If it doesn't appear in a screenshot it's probably a hardware issue,' one user suggested. Another wrote: 'OLED screen damage. Impact on that spot. Black circle will continue to grow. Screen will eventually need to be replaced as it grows.' And one said: 'It's the display. If you take it to an Apple Store, if you're under warranty or have AppleCare+, they'll replace the display for you for free.' Others took a more jokey stance on the situation. 'Dynamic archipelago,' one user wrote, in reference to Apple's Dynamic Island feature, which appears at the top of the screen whenever your iPhone is unlocked. 'That's the new punch hole cam,' another joked. And one quipped: 'Black wallpaper and problem solved.' MailOnline has contacted Apple for comment on the issue. If the screen isn't working on your iPhone or iPad, Apple advises a four step process to assess what the issue might be. Firstly, restart your iPhone by pressing and holding either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider apepars. Next, make sure your screen is cleand and free of any debris or water. Apple then advises disconnecting any Lightning or USB-C accessories. 'If your screen works after removing an accessory, try using a different socket, cable or charger,' it said. Finally, remove any cases or screen protectors. If your screen still isn't working, you may need to set up a service for your device here.
