The Indian rupee posted modest gains on Tuesday, tracking strength in regional peers, as markets looked past the White House's tariff letters and instead took solace in the deadline extension to August 1 that leaves room for deals to be struck. The rupee closed at 85.6950 against the U.S. dollar, up about 0.2% from its close at 85.85 in the previous session.Market reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump dispatching letters to 14 trading partner with sharply higher tariffs on imports into the United States was largely muted, with most regional equities and currencies gaining on Tuesday. For instance, while South Korea received a letter declaring a 25% tariff, the won rose 0.7% against the dollar and the KOSPI 200 index gained nearly 2%, logging its best day in two weeks.India's benchmark equity indexes logged modest gains as well. Local equities have largely kept pace with a regional stock gauge since U.S. reciprocal tariffs were announced on April 2, but the rupee has underperformed emerging market peers despite broad weakness in the dollar."The market seems to be taking the view that nothing is final and that these letters merely mark another iteration on the journey towards a trade deal," ING said in a note. The local currency was supported by modest interbank dollar sales on the day alongside positive cues from gains in regional currencies, a trader at a private bank said.Traders reckon that the rupee is likely to stick to rangebound price action in the near-term but the announcement of a trade deal with U.S. could open room for a rise towards 85.Meanwhile, dollar-rupee forward premiums retreated as traders trimmed wagers on rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The 1-year dollar-rupee implied yield declined 4 basis points to 1.95%.

Stock Market Updates: GIFT Nifty Signals A Muted Start For Sensex, Nifty; HCL Tech In Focus

Last Updated: Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are expected to be impacted on the first trading day of the week by multiple factors Sensex Today: Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are likely to open under pressure on the first trading day of the week, weighed by a host of global and domestic factors. Key triggers include India's June inflation data (both WPI and CPI), HCL Technologies' Q1 earnings, fresh trade tensions sparked by the US, China's June trade numbers, institutional flows, primary market activity, and overall weak global cues. India's consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation is expected to have declined further in June, staying below the Reserve Bank of India's 4 per cent target for the fifth consecutive month. Economists cite easing prices, especially in the food segment, along with a favourable base effect, as the main reasons. Retail inflation hit a 75-month low of 2.82 per cent in May, down from 5.08 per cent a year ago in June 2024. Global Cues Global markets started the week on a cautious note, largely reacting to a fresh wave of trade concerns. Over the weekend, US President Donald Trump announced a 30 per cent tariff on imports from the European Union and Mexico, effective August 1. The declaration, made via his platform Truth Social, has raised fears of a renewed trade war. While both the EU and Mexican leadership signaled willingness to negotiate, uncertainty looms over potential outcomes. There was a bright spot from Singapore, where GDP grew 4.3 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter, up from 3.9 per cent in Q1 and above the 3.5 per cent forecast. Quarter-on-quarter, the economy expanded by 1.4 per cent, bouncing back from a 0.5 per cent contraction—signaling economic resilience. In Asia, markets traded mixed. Japan's Nikkei was down 0.39 per cent, and the broader Topix slipped 0.34 per cent. Australia's ASX 200 dipped 0.14 per cent, while South Korea's Kospi defied the trend, rising 0.53 per cent. US futures were also in the red during Asian hours. Dow Jones futures fell 0.63 per cent, S&P 500 futures dropped 0.33 per cent, and Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.22 per cent. Wall Street had closed lower on Friday. The Dow Jones lost 279.13 points (0.63%) to settle at 44,371.51. The S&P 500 declined 0.33 per cent to 6,259.75, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.22 per cent to finish at 20,585.53—capping a downbeat week for US equities. view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 09:14 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Synopsis Pavan Guntupalli, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, transformed a simple concept into Rapido, a bike-taxi service valued at ₹6,700 crore. Overcoming initial setbacks with his logistics startup and investor skepticism, Guntupalli secured funding from Hero MotoCorp's Pawan Munjal. Agencies How this IITian Turned Startup Failure Into India's Largest Bike-Taxi Platform While it's common to hear tales of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alumni achieving stellar positions in global corporations, one particular journey stands out for breaking the mold—a tale of entrepreneurship, resilience, and remarkable brand-building worth Rs 6,700 crore in under ten years. His initial business effort was a logistics venture named 'theKarrier,' which he co-founded with a friend. Despite their dedication, the company didn't take off and eventually shut down. "We learnt from it," he said. What gave Rapido an edge was its unconventional growth strategy. While most ride-hailing services zeroed in on India's metro cities, Rapido turned its focus to tier-1 and tier-2 towns, where mobility issues were widespread and solutions limited. Initially, the company offered highly competitive rates—a base fare of Rs 15 and Rs 3 per kilometer—prioritizing affordability even at the cost of grassroots-level thinking paid off. Rapido gradually expanded across India and today operates in over 100 cities.
