SFI meeting urges people to extend solidarity with Palestine
He was speaking at a seminar titled 'Say No to War', organised by the Andhra Pradesh Student Federation of India (SFI) as part of a nation-wide awareness programme coinciding with the 18th All-India Conference of the federation being held at Kozhikode in Kerala. Mr. Lakshmana Rao said that the daily life of Palestinians has been marked by constant restrictions, violence and oppression. The event was organised to raise awareness among students about the need for global peace and an end to wars.
He added that it was not merely a political or geographical issue, but a humanitarian crisis and criticised the United States of America (U.S.A.) for 'fuelling wars worldwide to assert its dominance'. He also condemned the BJP-led NDA government's foreign policy, accusing it of acting like a puppet in the hands of U.S..
SFI's State secretary K. Prasanna Kumar said that wars, regardless of where they occurred, resulted in grave human loss and called for solidarity with Palestine as a stand for peace, equality and humanity. He said that everybody should support a free and sovereign Palestine.
The student federation leaders paid tributes to M. Saibaba, who served as the organisation's city president in Vijayawada in the past. The federation's State president P. Rammohan Rao, vice-presidents Ch. Venkateswara Rao and M. Kiran, State committee members Samaram, Amulya, Navita, Sai, Ganesh Nayak, Praneeth, Shanmukh, Kumar, Madhav and others were also present.

Consumers owe Jal Board Rs 1.42 lakh cr in pending water bills, Delhi Police top defaulter
The residents of Delhi owe the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Rs 1.42 lakh crore in pending water bills, officials have said. Of this, domestic consumers only owe the board Rs 15,000 crore, or 10.5% of the total amount. Officials said that consumers in the commercial category owe the DJB Rs 66,000 crore, followed by government departments, whose unpaid bills stand at Rs 61,000 crore, while domestic consumers owe the board Rs 15,000 crore. In the government category, officials said, Delhi Police tops the list of defaulters, followed by Delhi and Central government departments. At present, there are around 26.5 lakh consumers in 41 zones of DJB, said officials. The government is already working on a one-time scheme to waive the late payment surcharge (LPSC) of water bills of consumers falling under domestic and government categories. 'Work on the plan is currently going on. The plan will be ready in the next one-and-a-half months… by September. The government will waive LPSC charges. People will only have to pay the principal amount… the modalities for the same are being prepared,' Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said. According to officials, the pending bills have been adding up over the last 10 years. 'There are about 29 lakh water connections in Delhi, which is very less as compared to the city's population. The problem is that 70%-80% of the consumers claim that they have received inflated bills. Many also complain about irregular readings… To at least get the basic principal amount from domestic consumers, which stands at Rs 5,600 crore to Rs 6,000 crore, the government is planning to bring the waiver scheme,' said an official. Also, to avoid metering issues in the future, the government is planning to revamp the billing system and implement smart meters to collect water bills in Delhi, officials said. Officials further said that the government plans to do away with the scheme to provide 20,000 liters of free water per month to every household with a functional water meter. 'The scheme was brought by the previous AAP government. The BJP government is planning to make this scheme exclusive to people from the economically weaker sections, who genuinely require free water,' the official said. Officials further said the BJP government plans to revise water tariffs in Delhi.

Gaza truce talks in the balance as Israel and Hamas trade blame
Gaza ceasefire talks hung in the balance as Hamas and Israel on Saturday (July 12, 2025) accused the other of blocking attempts to strike a deal, nearly a week into an attempt to halt 21 months of bitter fighting in the Palestinian territory. A Palestinian source with knowledge of the indirect talks in Qatar told AFP that Israel's proposals to keep its troops in the war-torn territory were holding up a deal for a 60-day pause. But on the Israeli side, a senior political official, also speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivities of the talks, accused the militants of inflexibility and deliberately trying to scuttle an accord. On the ground, Gaza's civil defence agency said more than 20 people were killed across the territory on Saturday, including in an overnight air strike on an area sheltering the displaced. "While we were sleeping, there was an explosion... where two boys, a girl and their mother were staying," Bassam Hamdan told AFP after the attack in an area of Gaza City. "We found them torn to pieces, their remains scattered," he added. In southern Gaza, bodies covered in white plastic sheets were brought to the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis while wounded in Rafah were taken for treatment by donkey cart, on stretchers or carried. In Tel Aviv, thousands took to the streets urging the government to seal a hostage release deal. "The window of opportunity... is open now and it won't be for long," said Eli Sharabi, who was freed in February. Both Hamas and Israel have said that 10 hostages held since the militants' October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the war would be released -- if an agreement is reached. The Hamas attacks on Israel in 2023 resulted in the deaths of at least 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. Of the 251 hostages seized, 49 are still being held, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. At least 57,882 Palestinians, also mostly civilians, have been killed since the start of the war, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. Military operations The Israeli military said on Saturday it had attacked "approximately 250 terrorist targets throughout the Gaza Strip" in the previous 48 hours. It said fighter jets hit "over 35 Hamas terror targets" around Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza. Two previous ceasefires -- a week-long truce beginning in late November 2023 and a two-month one from mid-January this year -- saw 105 hostages released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The second Palestinian source said "some progress" had been made in the latest talks on plans for releasing Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and getting more aid to Gaza. Netanyahu, who is under domestic and international pressure to end the war, said this week that neutralising Hamas as a security threat was a prerequisite for any long-term ceasefire talks. That included disarmament, he said, warning that failure to do so would mean Israel would have to do so by force.

BJP govt has set its sights on demolishing jhuggis in Nangli Dairy: Atishi
AAP leader and former Delhi chief minister, Atishi, on Saturday said that the BJP government has started preparations to demolish jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) clusters in Nangli Dairy, just months after razing Madrasi Camp, Jailerwala Bagh, and Bhoomiheen Camp. Speaking to mediapersons, Atishi said, 'Ahead of elections, BJP leaders conducted symbolic stays in jhuggi-jhopri clusters, shared meals with residents, played ludo and carrom with children, and distributed 'Jhuggi ke sthaan par pakka makaan' cards.' 'While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly claimed that not a single slum would be demolished in Delhi… the moment Delhi elections were over and the BJP came to power, they began tearing down the homes of the poor. The very jhuggis where they made promises are now the first to face bulldozers,' she added. Atishi, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, said the BJP government is now preparing to demolish slums in Nangli Dairy. 'Two days ago, the BJP-run MCD pasted demolition notices on homes in the cluster, which has 250-300 jhuggis. Residents have been labelled 'encroachers' and warned that unless they submit documents within five days, their homes will be demolished,' she added. Maintaining that AAP stands firmly with the poor, Atishi said, 'Whether it's in court, at the MCD, in the Delhi Assembly or out on the streets, AAP will fight shoulder to shoulder with jhuggi dwellers. We will not allow the BJP to demolish these homes.'
