SFI meeting urges people to extend solidarity with Palestine
Former MLC K.S. Lakshmana Rao on Tuesday raised serious concern over the devastating humanitarian crisis caused by wars around the world, particularly in Palestine, where countless families have lost their homes and are living under miserable conditions. He was speaking at a seminar titled 'Say No to War', organised by the Andhra Pradesh Student Federation of India (SFI) as part of a nation-wide awareness programme coinciding with the 18th All-India Conference of the federation being held at Kozhikode in Kerala. Mr. Lakshmana Rao said that the daily life of Palestinians has been marked by constant restrictions, violence and oppression. The event was organised to raise awareness among students about the need for global peace and an end to wars. He added that it was not merely a political or geographical issue, but a humanitarian crisis and criticised the United States of America (U.S.A.) for 'fuelling wars worldwide to assert its dominance'. He also condemned the BJP-led NDA government's foreign policy, accusing it of acting like a puppet in the hands of U.S.. SFI's State secretary K. Prasanna Kumar said that wars, regardless of where they occurred, resulted in grave human loss and called for solidarity with Palestine as a stand for peace, equality and humanity. He said that everybody should support a free and sovereign Palestine. The student federation leaders paid tributes to M. Saibaba, who served as the organisation's city president in Vijayawada in the past. The federation's State president P. Rammohan Rao, vice-presidents Ch. Venkateswara Rao and M. Kiran, State committee members Samaram, Amulya, Navita, Sai, Ganesh Nayak, Praneeth, Shanmukh, Kumar, Madhav and others were also present.

Fishermen appeal to VPA chairperson to resolve grievances
Visakhapatnam: South constituency MLA Ch Vamsi Krishna Srinivas Yadav along with fishermen community leaders from the constituency met chairperson of Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) M Angamuthu here on Tuesday. During their interaction with the chairperson, the major problems faced by the community at the fishing harbour were brought to his attention. Fishermen did not pay taxes to the VPA during the Covid time. The community leaders requested the chairperson to waive off the dues to be paid. Along with this, they appealed to the port management to set up necessary cranes to dock the boats at the harbour. Later, they discussed various pending issues to be resolved. Responding to the fishermen, the chairperson assured them that the problems raised by them would be resolved at the earliest. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Vamsi Krishna Srinivasa mentioned that he fulfilled his promise of arranging the fishermen community leaders a meeting with the port chairman so that they could get their problems resolved. The MLA expressed hope that the chairperson responded positively to the issues raised by the fishermen and work towards resolving them soon. Representatives of the AP Mechanised Fishing Boat Operators Association and Dolphin Association, constituency coalition leaders, fishermen leaders Appa Rao, Lakshmana Rao, Fisheries JD Lakshmana Rao, FD Asha Jyoti and GVMC DE Venkateswara Rao attended the meeting.

Contractor claims pressure to build wall before Simhachalam tragedy
VISAKHAPATNAM: A day after the tragic incident at the Simhachalam temple, where seven devotees lost their lives due to the collapse of a retaining wall during Chandanotsavam, contractor Lakshmana Rao has made serious revelations regarding the construction of the wall. 'I was pressured to build the wall,' Rao, who was responsible for the wall's construction, told the three-member inquiry committee during the investigation. The three-member committee, appointed by the State government, began its investigation into the incident in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. The committee members visited Simhachalam, and began examining the circumstances surrounding the wall collapse. Officials have been directed to submit a detailed report within 72 hours. Rao, in his testimony to the committee, stated that he had initially refused to undertake the construction due to the extremely tight timeline before the festival. 'There was hardly any time left, and I clearly informed them that it wasn't feasible to build the wall in just six days,' he said. Despite his objections, Rao claimed that officials from both the Devasthanam and the Tourism Department insisted that he proceed with the project. 'They pressured me to build the wall. I was told it was only a temporary structure,' he added. Rao further revealed that the construction work began just four days before Chandanotsavam, raising concerns about the quality of the work given the short time frame.
